Lot of positives last night

Few negatives

Positives

Our fight for 80 minutes
Blore
The amount of chances we created
Our defence in the face of adversity

Negatives

Stupid errors from the back 3
Some lazy moments defensively
Our lack of calm when we went 14 down
Goalkicking

Thoughts ..anything anyone would like to add

We desperately need a reliable goal kicker, we would have had an extra 4 points to our score last night had Mybe kicked all the goals:angry:

Not negating the fact that we definitely need a better goal kicker, but Mitchy had an off night with the boot as well and missed 3 - Parra would’ve had another 6 points if he kicked as well as he normally does, so I guess the scoreline was evened out in the end anyway.

The major negative for me is that of the four top teams we have played so far, we have lost in three of those matches with poor second half performances.

Against the Raiders, Panthers and now the Eels , we have had to defend for most of the second half because of our poor discipline and poor execution.

In the second half last night we had only 40% of the possession. No team can give Parra 60% of second half possession and expect to win.

Sure, our defence is gritty, but in the second half we completed only 11 of 17 sets (Parra completed 19 of 24) and we were caned in the penalties.

I really thought the turning point was the penalty goal in the 1st half. Parra were shot to pieces after Matto going off and we should have put our foot on the throat however we let Parra creep back into it and not long after RCG scores one of the softest tries I can remember.

With how dominant we were in the first 25 mins we probably should have been up by a couple tries, not level

Biggest positive - Packer ironing out Matterson (legally I might add) and taking him out of the game! What an awesome run that was.

So much to like however have not had a decent half back since Scott Prince. If we had Cooper Cronk in the side last night we would have won the game. For his career left in the game I would love Brooks to be traded to Storm for Grant. Our merry go round of coaches has curtailed Brooks career.

Positive is that a number of experiments by professor Madge and his team are coming off.
Rediscovery of team player toughness and attitude for starters. Then vast improvements in players which we thought were done and dusted .... such as Packer, Reynolds and Elso.
Discovery of few young gems like Talau, Mcintyre, Joey, Leilua, Grant and Blore.
Work in progress is definitely our spine, 3/4 and lack of speed.

Goalkicking …Mbye needs to back himself…he punches at his kicks that are close to the sticks and probably explains why he pulls them

What's interesting is that Mbye is the third-string kicker after we started with Benji and Doueihi, all of whom are fundamentally decent kickers. I believe Lawrence can kick alright too.

Do we need some kick coaching?

One thing that interested me is when we thought we needed points the attack really opened up, last 20 mins. We did similarly against Penrith and Souths. There was much more ball movement and players coming hard onto the ball; very expansive.

It ended up being reasonably mistake-ridden as well, which is understandable, and particularly last night we'd done that mountain of work and look tired.

I just wonder however if at times we could up our backline aggression / risk by maybe 20% for short periods and be a little less rudimentary.

For example, the commentators kept on going on about how good an attacking record we have in 2020, 3rd-best in comp. This is technically true in terms of total points but it belies a deeper stat that we have been flogging low-placed opposition. The points against middle to upper-placed sides are modest.

It appears to me that we try to control the match momentum and then score points, which isn't necessarily wrong, but it also appears to follow that we aren't chancing our hand until a little too late in some matches.

Contrast to Eels, they broke the match open with some middle-ground offloading and a chip-n-chase.

We perhaps aren't quite a good enough team yet to use wrestle all match to try and control the game, then score points by weight of possession and pressure. Perhaps sometimes we need to attack hard earlier in the game, for example back-end of first half.

We also drop too much ball, still, to hope to apply sustained pressure. We definitely compete for 80 mins at the moment, but we are still coming undone against the best sides by those 1%ers, the RCG try, the Dylan Edwards try.

Our former goal kicking fullback is in the coaching ranks. Maybe he should spent time with the boys.

As was Richards for a while. You would think both he and Hodgson would’ve done some training with these guys already. Perhaps they just aren’t great kickers and never will be. It’s a skill that not everyone has, we just need to find a player who does have that skill.

Sometimes being able to do something and then being able to coach it can be difficult

Robert Lui was a good halfback and worked with Benji extremely well.

I agree about the lack of calm. I think we played catch up footy too early. There was a period where they started to tire. We would have been better to build a bit more pressure.

Packer charged for crusher, will miss next week. AD free to play.

I’d say he should contest it but given his track record and we’re only playing the warriors next week just cop it on the chin

Agree. He's already been branded guilty by the media and he's got a bad track record. One week was probably the best we could hope for.

Even though it wasn't a crusher...absolute joke.

Maybe we should really be looking at Farnsworth, the goal kicking centre at Broncos.

We brought in Chook Harrigan to do some goal kicking coaching at one stage. Not sure if he continues to have a level of involvement or not.

I thought our team was tough, despite a period of panic we still managed to mostly contain the slimers.

Blore.....what a revelation!!!! He is going to be a gun for years!!! Stuck it right up Brown and Brown couldn't handle it hahahaha.

Goalkicking.....man alive we need a kicker.

How many times did we get caught making crusher tackles for the opposition team to jump straight back up....some seriously weak calls by Sutton in this game, and now the media hype in regards to packer is disgraceful.

I thought he came down on the side of the head ( shoulder area ) to force the player to the ground. Crushers are becoming a joke and some Refs are easily led.

You are right, that is what he did. He did push down but it was on the right shoulder, Blind Freddie could see that - everyone except the Dope in the middle and the biased MRC (who a re a joke in themselves and should be sacked immediately).

Where are you Peter?
