Passing of another legend - to be confirmed

I was driving home yesterday in the Sigma yesterday and heard the end of an interview with Noel Kelly on 2SM. I think it was in regards to the passing of another Magpies player from the 60's (they were talking about a funeral in Lismore this week)

Could someone please confirm? If it is an old Magpie, hopefully the club does the right thing this week in honouring his memory

The Death Notice in yesterday's SMH souds like him: "MEANEY, Denis James. 01/10/1936 - 25/07/2011". Then followed family details etc, and a nice description: " A Gentle Giant". As I said, it sounds like him.
Condolences to the family.

Dennis Meaney was a giant of a man who played for the Mighty Magpies between 1960-1966? He was a front rower and as kid I was a regular at Pratten Park and I can clearly remember one game where he busted through and the opposing 1/2 back jumped on his back and Meaney seemingly carried him on his back for a further 20-30 metres before a few other players helped to bring him down!.

Ray Warren talked about him last night during the call and quoted Noel Kelly as saying that Meaney was a GENTLE GIANT and when they played together in the front row Kelly would try and trample the opposition and Meaney would help them up and pat them on the head.

Apparently there will be an acknowledgement of him and remembrance for the game against the Dragons next week. In 1961 he played all season and unfortunately suffered an injury and missed the Grand Final against
St George, but he did play in the 1962 & 1963 Grand Final losses.Very sad to hear of his passing and makes me realise how life is flashing before my eyes and each day is just another one closer to the grave.

Listening to 2KY at the moment and Zorba's just paid tribute to Denis, apparently he played in the 1968 Grand Final for Manly as well as being a Magpies stalwart and coached Lismore to win the Clayton Cup, the CRL's highest team honour in 1987, Vale Denis.

Dennis meaney played in the unlimited tackle era .The teams were much closer and it was a war of attrition, not as much speed or ball playing.

Props just put it under the arm and were battering rams.

Meaney was one of the first,if not the first Manly player to come to the maggies. Not the other way around.

Wests were the millionare club in the early sixties .

With due respect to the family, what a great surname for a rugby league front rower.

John Clark was another who came across to Wests from Manly juniors in the late 60's.
