He is a tough versatile back, with experience, as long as we didnt pay overs, I see it as a solid buy. Potter would have also had knowledge of his form in the UK first hand, he might be on the pulse here… but means Lote, Utai, and unfortunately Reddy can be moved out to the farm, thats 2 spare spots to fill with promoted players.
We are promoting kids at a greater rate than any other club, it seems with the stock we have coming through it may have been an investment long in the making, but to think we can do so without a sprinkling of experience in the mix is wrong. His contract isnt overly long, and buys us time to get games under the belts of the young guys.

i like the signing he will be taking over the goal kicking according to benji so that is a positive. everyone is saying about nofa. while he is going to be a great player we cannot afford to have 3 inexperienced wingers/fullback in the team at once. the majority of clubs have at least one if not two experienced players playing out the back. the deal is for two years so by the time nofa is 22 yes 22 patty will be finishing the contract and nofa will probably have had a few tastes. Teddy and Marika will be approaching 50 games so they will be established players and then we can add the youthful exuberance. He will be a leader for all the outside backs with the imminent departures of lote and utai so his experience will be invaluable

Happy with the signing as long as we didn't pay overs.
With the signing of Richards, I think it's safe to assume that Utai and Lote won't be getting a contract extension beyond this year.

it's funny how people had been saying how our backs have let us down this year yet when we go out and buy a back who is proven at NRL and one of the best in the super league, they chuck a hissy fit.

Loved the bloke when he was here, but he's a bit long in the tooth for mine. I will reserve judgement until I see him play as he has been top point scorer in four seasons and MOS, but 8 years in the ESL which I feel isn't nearly as physically demanding as the NRL, we may see him spend some time on the sideline, particularly early on in the piece.

What has been missed is that this is Potter's first signing. Has probably seen a lot of Richards in ESL, so don't discount this signing as emotion driven.
Happy to give him the benefit of the doubt and think this could turn out a good signing, as he was definitely talented, and both lyon and hodges are as good as they ever were. No reason he couldn't be a great player, and his ESL form has been fantastic.
The problem I think many have already point out is the impact on Nofo. Those who say he will be 22 by the time Pat retires are kidding themselves if they think he will stick around. If you are already NRL talent level, and not in first grade, another club will come and sign you. Players wont wait around on the hope that they may be next in line once someone retires in 2 years, you take your opportunities when they come. I think its also ridiculous to say if he is playing well enough he will get placed in the side by potter. So far we haven't seen any tendency to dump under performing players. Only player dropped was Miller, and sheens always did the same thing in dropping the one player who was a fringe player not given a chance. If we got two good years of richards, but miss out on 5+ more years of equal quality from a talented junior I don't think it will be worth it. Ultimately it depends on how willing Potter will be to make the hard decisions and not stick with the safety first option. I hope he can make the right decisions but time will tell.

lol, did you forget what team you support? this is the west tigers; we never have a healthy team. Nofo will find his way into the team by round 4 next year although it could be at the centres. I read somewhere he has played there before, its just right now he's playing at wing.

We cannot afford to drop on poor form unfortunately at present, plagued by injury, thin on experience on the park as it is. Hard call on Potter if people will hold him to the torch over the start of this season, his hands have been tied by events out of his control.
I cannot see into Potters head, but the signing of Pat rings to me of intentions to bring experience into the team so we can balance promoting the kids.
