wouldn't be surprised if Mapapalangi and Staines switch at some point. Rahme rightly misses out. too many small forwards.
What I like is that Aaron Payne has been consistent with his player selections (hooker/lock/halfback & edges) for the past month somewhat so they should be building some good combos now.

No excuses & should give the in-form Dragons a run for their money.

I like giving Mason reps at 5/8 so he can develop more as a NRL bench utility. Hopefully he gets time filling in at dummy-half & lock in Cup over the remainder of the season too.

I was curious to see how long its been since we won three on the trot in reggies

Havent done it since 2021....think that season was severely covid affected, but they won 9 in a row....havent had WWW since

It's a weak side - Wayne couldn't coach that side to wins. Too many kids and too many players not nsw cup level.
What's everyone's thoughts on strengthening it?
Its been pretty poor for years.

Do we need to recruit better cup players or do we need a better top 30 to drip feed back into cup ?

I look at the other team liste and there's a lot of promising players, good prospects and ours is kinda just a dud list.

I thought word out of WT over the off season was they did make signings to strengthen it. I think it’s time for a new coach

Strengthening the top 30 is the solution I reckon, then not all of the 1st grade talent can fit into the team and will play their arses off in reserves to get back in.

I eagerly await some more in depth reviews, but it’s alarming how unmotivated and how poor the defensive commitment is from this team.
Even more alarming is it’s exactly the same with our Jersey Flegg team.
Surely Richo cannot be happy with these continued poor results and has plans for a big overhaul in place ?

Disappointing result, we didn't adapt well to a few injury/HIA/replacement circumstances when we were just 6-10 down after 20 mins.

We lost both our starting middles Vaka Aho (leg I think it was) & Kit Laulilii (HIA) after just 10 mins. Kit was quite damaging in his short stint.

Then Heath Mason was taken off after we scored on the 20th minute. It didn't look injury-related so maybe it was a plan so he can be injury cover for the Storm game (maybe if Bula's ankle doesn't pull up well & doubts of Naden and To'a).

Because of this, our edges had a big re-shuffle. Malapalangi was moved from right centre to fullback, Feledy was moved from left to right centre, Elie El Zakhem was moved from right backrower to left centre, Luke Jack came on at right backrower.

We didn't adapt in defence at all & Dragons middles were too big & strong against our middles Porter, Noah Johannsen & Murray. Falls was found out on his edge multiple times too.

On the positive, we actually matched them in the 2nd half 20-20.

Matamua came on for most of the 2nd half, did the usual Matamua things but near the end produced a great chip'n regather followed by quick pass to a support player who scored.

Mapapalangi looked good in a well beaten side and actually scored taking a nice aerial bomb. Max Liles tried hard, had some nice touches and scored another good individual try 10m out with a lovely step. Cameron Kanaan didn't look out of place on the wing, Sukkar was strong and once again I thought El-Zakhem was our best - makes good metres with his runs, looks dangerous, can produce an offload and produced a lovely around the defender pass to send his winger over for a try.

TAKE-AWAYS:

This team continues to lose matches in a short period & doesn't have the resilience & team connection to dig itself out.

I think we struggle without any dominating middles so we rarely see any front foot play in attack & get pushed back in defence. Because of this the likes of Sukkar, Liles & Mason don't look as good as what they would in a better team.

Both Kit & Vaka have meant to do this. Vaka has had a few injury issues the past 3 weeks & Kit has been improving. Our other middles are your smaller types (Murray, Rahme) or lack bulk (Porter, Johannsen).

Moving forward keep an eye on Krystian Mapapalangi (except he was limping in the final minute) & Elie El-Zakhem, they could well play themselves into a NRL contract or T&T for next season.

I think what’s more important is that they are playing the same system through the grades, so that any player that steps up is familiar, but that team looks lethargic. They don’t look like they care at all.

This team we need pulling some of the better flegg players up into Koe for the rest of the season, change in coach and a change in philosophy.
