Paul Gallen

I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead - tomorrow hasn’t arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I’m going to be happy in it.

You must all be so proud of your NSW captain now

Looks that way Hap….similar to the way Queenslanders feel about Cammy (salary cap
2 cars and a boat... I new nothing?) Smith...

Happy , while not condoning what he did at all(I'm talking about the tweet) I find the fine a bit extreme . $50 grand is a hell of a fine for a stupid tweet when you compare it to a lot of stuff that goes on everyday ( including where people get injured , accidentally and deliberately)
When you compare it to Smith, Slater, and Inglis's systemic cheating of the salary cap over years. They were almost knighted for that.
I don't think his tweet was any worse than that. Now that's where a 50 grand fine would have been a fitting punishment. Taking back a premiership meant nothing to Melbourne players as they were in complete denial about the whole thing.
The funny thing about that farce was that the players knew how much went into their accounts , and knew there was something suss about signing numerous contracts . yet Cammie is now royalty.
With all those contracts floating about , I suppose he can afford to be. Lol
It was a ridiculous thing for him to do . But unfortunately that type of language is commonplace with that generation(and younger ) in everyday conversations, and is getting worse. Pity

Hey Flip I don't know you, outside of your posts here on the Forum, but let me say how brave you are to tell us your plight….well done!...you are surrounded by the WT family here mate, so stay engaged with your fellow WT Forum posters, you've have many kind offers in this post, don't be ashamed or frightened to take them up.

All the very best...Alex(Alexaki).... :sign:

I don't even know why I blurted that out earlier, it just came out, but thanks everyone for your kind sentiments and offers of help - I appreciate it very much.

Being a part of this forum is already great therapy for me. Lots of laughs, ideas, opinions and rigorous debate is good for the soul. I appreciate each and every one of you, even the weird ones lol, actually especially the weird ones - you have helped to keep me sane over the last few years. I am also fortunate to have a job where I am directly able to help people, who are struggling in their daily lives, and this is great therapy, as well.

Monday Buzz: Paul Gallen’s hidden battle with depression

Oh that makes sense - **if you have depression** you are inclined to obscenely swear on Twitter and forget your responsibilities as captain of NSW. **Poor Gallen**.

Would you have preferred it get to a level where, like some others, he did something far more serious and permanent?
If he does suffer depression, and the never ending ASADA investigation with him as their prime target wouldn't help out, then he does need to seek help.
He swore in a tweet and he should have been smart enough to know better.
Not the most heinous of crimes.

Well said, CK and thankfully Gallen is already receiving treatment for his depression.

Whilst not excusing his tweet (he definitely should've known better) you're right it's certainly not the most heinous of crimes. Anyone can rant and rave all sort of expletives at home, at work or amongst their friends, but once it's expressed on social media, that's the end of it….you become the worst person in the world! I swear social media will be the death of us.

On a side note, depression is a serious mental health problem that shouldn't be joked about or taken lightly. Much like dementia, it's insidious and in-discriminative. It's the great equaliser in many ways because on the one hand, you have Gallen, who has fame, money and has achieved a lot in his short lifetime, while on the other hand, you have me - a nobody, with little money or achievement to speak of, yet we both have depression - go figure.

The authenticity and integrity of your post just confirms what most would know on here, that you're by far more of a somebody than Gallen…

As much as I agree with the sentiment behind what you're saying...

All I know is that if I called my boss "that name" I would be sacked. Face to face, in an email, on a tweet or on Facebook - I would still be sacked.

Looking at it from another angle, he was fined $50K. He earns what? Let's say $500K (probably a damn sight more), so that's 10% of his annual gross salary. So if my boss fined me 10% of my gross salary - a pittance.

I don't feel sorry for Gallen, not one little bit. But I've always been in the minority.

Paul Gallen's heavy-handed punishment for a foul-mouthed Twitter tirade may not extend to losing the Blues' captaincy after he received some welcome support from NSWRL chairman George Peponis. The Cronulla and Blues skipper was handed a $50,000 fine and a provisional Kangaroos suspension for 2015 on Monday with NRL chief executive Dave Smith suggesting his NSW position would come under the microscope.

Gallen has seven days to respond to the breach notice and explain any mitigating factors that might have contributed to his Twitter brain-snap while holidaying in Hawaii. News Corp reported on Monday that Gallen was suffering depression, however the 33-year-old refused to clarify the matter in detail when questioned at a boxing promotion in Sydney.

The NRL imposed the heaviest possible code of conduct fine on Gallen and he will also be ineligible for Australian selection in 2015 unless he successfully completes a leadership course. His eligibility would then be reviewed by an ARL commission panel.

Gallen, who is currently serving a 12-week ASADA-imposed anti-doping suspension along with Sharks teammates from the 2011 season, is in hot water for the comment he posted in response to Cronulla chief executive Steve Noyce being sacked last week.

"Steve Noice (sic) actually cared about players from Cronulla's feelings," Gallen wrote in reference to the ASADA affair. "Couldn't say that about any other c– from Nrl."

Smith said he still intended on discussing Gallen and Origin with the NSWRL "Origin is one of our flagship properties and we do not want it to be undermined in any way," Smith said in a statement.

According to the NRL, Gallen's punishment was determined with the full support of the Cronulla club, with Sharks chairman Damian Keogh expressing his disappointment in Gallen's actions.

"The last two years have been a difficult period for the Sharks and our focus is on performing strongly on and off the field in 2015," Keogh said. "So it is disappointing to have the club involved in this sort of issue as we prepare for next season."

Meanwhile, Gallen was tight-lipped on Monday amid reports he's suffering depression

in fairness to Gallen , He hasn't tried to use any illness as an excuse for his actions.
Apparently he was dealing with his illness privately, and if that was his choice, then he is entitled to do that. It's his decision.
It's just another case of the Telegraphs no 1 Germ using anything that he can to get his grubby claws on a headline.

Inspirational words and so true. Loved Grouch. He was truly a master of quick wit and one of the best comedians of his time.

Flip i don't physically know you but your posts reveal something true, honest and likeable about you. I'am sure you're surrounded by good people in real life you can talk too as well as here on this forum. By the way i love reading your posts

I hope Gallen and his manager haven't concocted the depression story and using it as his get out of trouble card. Would they stoop so low? Hmm…..I wouldn't put it past them.

Yeah, living it up while on holidays in Hawaii and getting royally smashed on happy hour cocktails with the likes of Pearce and co. is a great way of dealing with his so called depression is'nt it :unamused:

That's a very ignorant statement. People deal with depression in different ways, it's not black and white. Personally, travel is the best way to deal with any issues I have and to imply he doesn't have depression because he's out drinking and partying is an extremely childish interpretation of the situation.
