in fairness to Gallen , He hasn't tried to use any illness as an excuse for his actions.
Apparently he was dealing with his illness privately, and if that was his choice, then he is entitled to do that. It's his decision.
It's just another case of the Telegraphs no 1 Germ using anything that he can to get his grubby claws on a headline.

Yeah, living it up while on holidays in Hawaii and getting royally smashed on happy hour cocktails with the likes of Pearce and co. is a great way of dealing with his so called depression is'nt it :unamused:

That's a very ignorant statement. People deal with depression in different ways, it's not black and white. Personally, travel is the best way to deal with any issues I have and to imply he doesn't have depression because he's out drinking and partying is an extremely childish interpretation of the situation.

I think you are missing the real point. What brought about his $50K fine is not whether or not Gallen has depression. There are thousands of people in NSW suffering different extremes of depression daily in some form or other and I very much feel for them. What brought about the fine was the extremely obscene manner in which he used a very public forum such as Twitter to describe NRL executives . The NRL took into account that as NSW captain he was negligent in meeting the duties of his position. He was therefore deemed guilty of bringing the game of rugby league into disrepute.

I dare say there are plenty of NRL executives who don't meet the duties of their positions- and who still get paid handsomely every week with no chance of their pay being docked .

Speculation.

I have not read anywhere of any NRL officials calling people crude names on Twitter or elsewhere. ( It's not call Twitter for nothing) Long for Twit.

Also have not heard of any NRL official caught using banned substances.

If you have any names please feel free to tell everyone on this forum.

Nothing in life is black and white Blake. Alcohol intensifies depression and if Gallen does suffer from it, he needs to restrain from it. Especially if he is taking meds. Spending quality time with his family, wife and kids and away from the spot light might be a better way to deal with any problems he might have instead of getting smashed with his "buddies"And you saying my view is childish because it differs from yours is a bit immature don't you think?

In reply to magpiecol (too many quotes to tie together) - I didn't say any NRL executives were ranting on twitter or taking banned substances - even though they don't get tested for them.
I was alluding to the fact that some don't meet the duties of their positions by being incompentant dumbarses .

Blake93,agree with you that people do deal with depression in varying ways, however your opinion is valued as are others,Tigermama works within the medical profession and I would surely listen to her opinion as it is a field that she is very familiar with. Not all people with depression do the right thing by themselves or others.
Tigermama is niether childish or ignorant and is quite within her right to have an opinion as are all of us….

It seems that the Rugby League community is littered with depression and the current level of social media is probably a huge contributing factor. It is hardly surprising to me that Gallen is suffering from depression. He lives with physical pain every day, the dramas at Cronulla and the ASADA debacle, the public scrutiny and the names that he is regularly called on a daily basis by all the haters of which there are many, even contemplating the future when Rugby League is over. Alcohol is often used as a go to - to relieve the pressure of dealing with reality, and unfortunately in this case, like many of us under the influence have done before, he made a stupid decision. We encourage people to talk about this illness so that we can be more aware of and deal with it. Just because Gallen to some may appear to have a privileged life, dosnt exclude him suffering from mental health issues, and even if he accepts and is aware of it, the process of managing it can take years. While some level of action needs to be taken, I think we should all be careful about questioning the validity of his current mental state.

I am not "gooleing" anybody. I am not the one who has made accusations about anybody. You are.

If you have not got any proof then I would suggest you desist before you say or write something that you may regret.

Wow, sorry Col :unamused:
What proof do I need to provide that, in my opinion, someone is incompetant or a dumbarse?
If you had tried 'gooleing' Dave Smith you might see that most of the NRL club bosses don't exactly agree with everything he does.
I am, however, terribly worried by the fact I may regret giving my opinion- are you going to tell on me?

Smith has heavy henchmen trawling forums for this very reason…be careful if you hear a knock on the door CK

Thanks , Ink…....hold on there's someone at the door.

I guess when you think about it

If he bags a referee out he will get a 10 k fine

He bags the game out and gets a 50 k fine and has to show cause why he can play for Australia and complete a leadership course

Fine is probably a touch excessive , but as long as he is prepared to follow other guidelines set out he will be fine and the NSWRL and Dr George Peponis has already said they won't strip him of the NSW captaincy

Paul Kent is not always popular but I reckon he has nailed it on this issue.
If most people abused their boss (or company) they would be sacked.

Further more as he has said recently, surely we expect higher standards from players at the moment. The fact that so many players condoned what Carney did, or people making excuses for the blatant use of performance enhancing drugs, which we all know was implemented systematically, just because some evidence was not admissible does not lessen the fact we all know it occurred. Can you imagine if a chinese swim team did it exactly what the sharks did, and got the penalty the sharks got and the captain carried on like Paul Gallen, he would be lambasted.

Absolutely correct Goose. In my opinion the fine had to be steep. Let's not forget that this man has a sheet rap as long as his arm. Racial abuse ( Sharks captaincy taken off him) urinating in public near a friends head etc… he' been charged numerous times for thuggery and grubbyness on the field.( Who could forget when he tried to rip the stitches out of Laffranchi's head wound )
Enough's enough. He's 33 not 18\. The only one's i feel sorry for is his family.
