PAYTEN NAMES U20S SQUAD FOR HULL KR TRIAL

I didn't realise Matt Groat and Jacob Miller were still young enough to play in the U20s. Looking forward to seeing what Jordan Marshall can do. It's nearly footy time! Woohoo!
 
Hull KR really struggled to put away the Wests SG Ball team so they are going to get flogged in the next game v the Tigers.
Hope the weather holds out tomorrow night and a decent crowd turns up.
 
If they struggled against a ball team, this could be ugly, sometimes the organizers of tours get it very wrong, I went on a rugby tour on NZ and of our 3 games, 1 we won by over 100, and one we lost by about 70, fair to say they stuffed up on getting the right level of opposition for us!!

The two props were awesome - not sure on their names but number 10 in particular has Fui Fui Moi Moi written all over him , I took about 20 minutes of footage will have on line shortly.
 
Fui Fui was Soni Paasi 10, 3 or 4 defenders are just a little bit sore after being steam rolled by him. The tall prop 8 finished very strongly including a 70m run from the kick off.
Also thought Mitchell Moses 19 went well, 50m break with his first touch, scored a 70m try, kicked a 40/20 and set up another 2 tries. The 6 also looked the goods along with James Luff 9.

Yep, have to agree with all of the above. The two starting props were both very strong (Jarrod Szczudlo and Soni Paasi), I also thought number 12 Andy Fiagatusa went well. Just on the props, Paasi will definitely become a crowd favorite, 3 of his runs left several Hull players in various states of semi-consciousness and one of his runs in the last 25 minutes was an absolute cracker where he skittled half of Hull. He's got great leg speed when he winds up too. Mitchell Moses had a couple of classy touches.

As for Jordan Marshall, well he bagged a hattrick including scoring from his first touch of the ball where he did the famous Benji show-and-go and then a shimmy before splitting between defenders. His second try came in the second stanza where he was playing on the wing, he just collected a very neat cut out pass to score out wide. His third try was a 70 metre intercept where he fielded a poorly placed Hull kick. He showed great pace on his way to the line, Hull chasers could not gain on him and he pulled away from them with ease. He has a different running style to Benji, and doesn't have the same playmaking skills, but he'll be somewhere in the NYC outfit, he's got the skill and pace, defence needs work but that should improve as he gains some weight and match practice.

12 tries to 2 in the end and this squad did not have the likes of Tedesco, Koroibete, Vela, Fotuiaka, Sironen, Miller, Lovett, Nofoaluma and Santi.

I ended up sitting near the tunnel and had a few of the main squad sitting near me. Saw Sironen, Miller, Fotuiaka (powerfully built), Chisholm, BMM (Built like a tank), Koroibete, Grant (very tall and looked very fit), Linc Port, Matt Evans, Shaun Spence (looks like he has put on some size), Jack Spence (looks just the photos we have seen). There were a couple of other players there that i did not recognise. All the guys looked relaxed and obviously very fit. Sheens was also there passing an eye over the NYC squad.
 
Hello Helmesy - my son was playing for the Hull KR team, you mentioned about some footage would I be able to see it please - I'm a mum back in England. I heard it was a tough game for the HKR lads but they are really learning from their expereince

Hull were certainly willing, but ultimately outclassed and outmuscled by the Tigers who were pretty slick for their first hitout. I'm sure the Hull boys will have found the trip and experience worthwhile and beneficial though.
 
STRONG OPENING TRIAL WIN FOR U20S

Sheer brute strength combined with some fine attacking skills saw Wests Tigers U20s side record a comfortable trial match win over Hull KR Academy squad at Concord Oval tonight.

In a match played over 3 x 25 minute quarters, the intensity of strong pre-season training saw Wests Tigers dominate a brave Hull KR outfit to score 13 tries to 2\. No goal-kicks were taken.

Former Wests Tigers premiership winning prop turned U20s Coach Todd Payten was pleased with his squad’s first hit out for the season. Only 6 of 20 contracted Wests Tigers took to the field.

“It answered some of my questions I had leading into it. I was looking at a few combinations and a couple of positions in particular,’’ Payten said.

“It was difficult in some regards because we were overloaded with halves and hookers and they didn’t get a great deal of game time. The hookers in James Luff, Nafoa Lepai, Menaia Cherrington and Mitchell Moses all played well.

“Prop Jarrod Szczudlo did a few impressive things while prop Soni Paasi was very strong and aggressive. Jordan Marshall played pretty well and showed his versatility by playing full-back, five-eighth and on the wing for me. He scored three tries and is a kid who is pretty quick between the ears.”

The only injury concern for Wests Tigers was a hamstring injury to winger Harry Grove.
