Long serving Wests Tigers prop Todd Payten has today announced his retirement at the end of the 2011 Telstra Premiership season.

The respected front-rower was contracted to the club next season but has decided the time is right to bring down the curtain on a wonderful career that started back in Canberra in 1996.

A Temora junior, Payten has played 253 NRL games in a career that has seen him play at Canberra Raiders and the Sydney Roosters before joining Wests Tigers in 2004\. He played in the premiership winning Wests Tigers team in 2005.

Currently recovering from a knee injury, Payten has been the leader of the Wests Tigers pack and has played 145 games for the Club. He hopes to start running by the end of the month.

“I’ve been very fortunate to have been able to play this great game at such a high level for a long time. The game has certainly changed,’’ Payten said.

“Rugby League has been very good to me and I have made some great friends and have some special memories. My years at Wests Tigers have been the best time of my life and I’ve really enjoyed playing under a fantastic coach in Tim Sheens.

“Wests Tigers will always be apart of me. I just want to get back onto the field now as quickly as possible to help the team make the finals.”

Good decision

He has been missed this year…16 seasons of NRL footy is a massive career...Well done Todd

What a terrific player and ambassador he has been for our club. I will miss him allot.

Good luck Todd.

If Todd gets back on the field then we will scare the life out of the opposition, if and when Todd does then boys 'do it for the Gipper' sorry do it for Todd.
Lastly, well done on a great career at the Tigers Todd, it wasn't until I read Forever Brothers that I was made aware of just how big an effort Todd put in to make the '05 GF, all the focus was on Pat Richards recovery but by all accounts Todd had just as big a battle to make it and played huge part in the win.

Well done Todd on a stellar career mate! Has one a premiership with us in 2005 and has represented the club in nearly 150 first grade games. A great achievement and hopefully you stick around in some form at the Tigers as your character is invaluable to such a young squad!

Great career Todd, well done ! Congratulations for your Tiger spirit.

Wonder if the clubs financial situation came into his decision. If so more power to him.

one has to wonder if this is the player being refereed to in this morning's paper?
he's not a rep player though…

A great servant, who has won us many games, unfortunately time has caught up with Todd, and its time to go,hope he hangs around,he will make a great coach I think.

Hopefully, the team can get their act together and send Todd off with another premiership!
