Did I miss something? At the ground it looked like an absolute stinker - looked like the Manly player was between our guy (Rhino?) and the ball runner? Glad we didn't go down by 2 points…

Looked like Heighno only had eyes for the decoy/shepherder….he needed to milk the shepherd more

one of those 50/50 calls imo. The Mnaly player took a dive ,got up when he knew he got the penalty.decoy ran straight at the defender.

It was a very harsh penalty.
On replay you could see that Heighno did have eyes only for the decoy; but that is hardly the point. He was obstructed from making a tackle on the man with the ball and more than that he did not actually make a tackle on the decoy he did little more than collide with him.
Referees will decide a ridiculously high percentage of games this year.

O well we got a call from the refs last week that evens up the ledger

its was a horrible horrible decision… he had no other option but to tackle the guy.. the line the attacker was running, he was getting the ball... if he wasn't, it was going to be a sheppard... so heighno did the right thing... if he held back and didnt make a play at the man, and he ended up getting the ball and running straight through.. well we'd be slagging heigno for holding back...
no bias here either... if it was the other way round and we did the same play and manly tackled our player.. id also be calling for a penalty to manly... it was an absolutely pathetic decision..

Bad call no doubt , but that didn't effect the dropped ball by Humble the injuries to Ellis and Utai
Lets face it the refs are getting worse and worse and some weeks we get it go our way ,and some weeks it will be vice versa
But if we are a good enough team we should be able to overcome these obstacles most weeks

It really was a line-ball decision. My preferred solution in those situations is for the ref to just call play on…

50/50 for mine… The decoy runner only had the intention of running a whole, but Rhino needed to change direction to apply pressure on DCE. As a result Rhino put him on his bum, and if this was a try-scoring play, we wouldve recieve a penalty and No Try.
There is also plenty of rules in the book which highlight Rhino had no right to tackle the man without the ball, so we get some and we miss some.

its not 50/50.. no way… its 100% wrong, 0% right...
heighington was forced to make a decision at full speed... he doesnt have the benefit of seeing the intentions of DCE or the ball runner in slow motion on a replay..
at full speed, 1 of 2 things were going to happen:
1\. the ball runner gets the ball and heighington makes the tackle
2\. its a sheppard... as a result a player is incorrectly tackled.. however, the 'illegal' tackle never occurs if they never performed the illegal sheppard to begin with...
it was wrong to penalise us... wrong wrong wrong... if DCE conceeds the tackle and its play on, sweet i have no issue with that... but there is no way we should have been penalised...
we may as well employ these sheppard plays as a tactic if this is the rule.... just get opposition players to tackle our guys without the ball (just before we perform a sheppard) and milk a penalty...
common sense needs to be used....
