Penrith Panthers rugby league club lodged a trademark application for the name “Western Sydney Panthers” 10 days ago, adding further intrigue to a sporting battle for domination of the region.

According to IP Australia database, the club applied on May 7\. The application can be viewed here.

SBI asked for a comment from the Panthers’ media officer Melissa Seiler, who expressed surprise and said: “No, I haven’t heard anything about that.”

The region is hotly contested sporting turf this year. A new A-League franchise named its coach and chairman on Thursday, while Greater Western Sydney holds AFL hopes of making a breakthrough for the code in the area.

The hot tip for their colours is Black White & Red

For real?

Or is that an insider joke I'm not getting?

I'm not sure if Ink is taking the piss either, but Western Sydney Rovers (the 2009 Western Sydney A-League bid,) were going to have a black, white and red strip.

Heard Popovich on radio this evening, he said that….said there are four or five districts in the area and those three colours cover all the districts colours, he did say nothings concrete yet

The names for Western Sydney are going to be Strikers, Athletics, Wanderers or Wolves.

Very peculiar decision from Penrith, they wouldn't want to confuse their brand with a well-established one like the Panthers.

Also, this should be an NRL topic, not a West Tigers one.

I doubt they would change from Penrith, but rather this is a back up option if the dynamics of the market change. It is not completely unusual.

As an example, I know Penn has registered the name "Central Coast Eagles"

i think it's their way of saying they are the best club in western sydney. is it true or speculation?

Go Norths!!
