Player Dramas in the NRL

We can all have varying opinions in regards to actions that should be taken against these 2 dumbarses..

However what we really should look at is the overall impact this indiscretion will have toward rugby league and the 16 teams in the NRL...will schools now reduce the visits or completely rule them out when clinics and the kids heros are supposed to give instructionals to the many young fans that play the game from a young age or will the presence of girls completely rule out visitations all together..

DETAILS: The Bulldogs players allegedly broke team rules and brought females back to the hotel in Port Macquarie. It’s understood the girls are in high school.

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/bulldogs-duo-stood-down-over-serious-breach-20200310-p548pm.html

High school, well I think we'll hear more about this one. Let's see how long it takes for someone from our forum to go off about this without knowing any more information, without knowing what happened.

Let's just be cool, and not jump the gun.

The girls were not under age ... so why the stand down . A stern fine by the club at best this has Greenturd all over it ...once again a huge knee j**k reaction the sooner he is gone the better !

Doesn't change the fact that they are still school students that were allegedly met during a school visit. That's extremely inappropriate behaviour, completely unprofessional and a poor representation of the NRL and the Bulldogs. Over 18 or not that's irrelevant, they're still high school students.

100% Fraze. Totally unacceptable behaviour and poor use of power given the situation.

It's an absolute Dog act
It's ironic that they play for the Dogs
Can't help but think this kind of behaviour is why Corey Harawira-Naera was released from the Panthers in the 1st place

deal with any theft or fraud within their branches.
>The NRL needs to caome down hard, put together some tough guidelines, as objectively as possible. Not make it up as they go.
>Or do you think the NRL can do nothing?

Yes deal with fraud and theft, not stop all fraud and theft. You cannot control or be responsible for the actions of 100% of your employees, and NRL players aren't even employees of the NRL.

By all means, suspend Okunbor and CHN. No, forget that, ban them from the game forever. Ban these two forever and anyone else who strays. And I guarantee you we still get another incident in the future.

And you reckon NRL don't have guidelines to deal with these sort of things? Hmm then how exactly have they been referred to the Integrity Committee and stood down? I don't suppose the Integrity Committee follows guidelines of any sort. How exactly do you pre-draft a set of guidelines for dealing with incidents where players have sex with high school girls?

Of course the NRL can do something, both in retaliation to this specific incident, and generally to continue to try and improve the social awareness and decision-making of the players. Of course NRL already has programs in place in this regard. Maybe they need revision, how can I judge from outside? But ultimately it's a very large group of young, ego-drive, often wealthy young men, and you are going to have issues.

Above, @Leck says that "education is the key". Well humanity is done for if you need to educate people on why it's not smart to seduce high school girls when you are a famous footballer (let alone at all).

Didn't say it wasn't serious. Super serious. But what is the NRL CEO supposed to do to stop it?

What do they need, a "don't bang chicks you met in a high school" program in the NRL?

Unfortunately for these two players, I think the NRL need to make an example of these two. The NRL CEO should be charging the Integrity Review Committee to take charge and come down hard, but he instead retained the power in his own hands.

You can't tell the players every thung they can't do, like with Simona, you couldn't tell him specifically not to bet on your opposing player to score the first try in a game against you. Some things they should just know. I think the NRL will be hard, as they do seem to usually respond to social media pressure (which is another topic that I will leave right there).

You can create images of being an inclusive sport all you like in a bid to attract ‘new’ supporters and players but until the NRL clean up its own backyard with strong, consistent, transparent and far reaching discipline for players who soil the brand it will never attract new supporters.
Also, I think it’s about time the players association gets on board with the NRL in a bid to work together in demanding higher behaviour expectations of players.

Absolutely mate. This is the hypocrisy I've been referring to, with the women in league round and all their posturing and chest beating. This rubbish needs to be fixed up first BEFORE those sorts of initiatives can be taken as serious efforts fpr change and not just a pretense.

What seriously is the NRL supposed to do about a few DHs throwing their doodles about?

It would be like saying the CEO of Westpac is responsible for someone sticking their hand in the till at the Stanmore branch.

The 2 players are the ones at fault, no doubt.
Greenberg's sweeping under the carpet of Ben Barba hitting his partner 7 or 8 years ago may well be an explanation why some players believe they can do whatever they want as far as women are concerned.
Greenberg acting all high and mighty, threatening major penalties for Okanbur and CHN, perhaps someone in the media should have the figs enough to ask him if he thinks he has set a precedent all those years ago as far as player/women interactions go?
Todd is a germ first and foremost, these players are just products of the environment created by Greenberg as Bulldogs CEO.

Stanmore doesn't have a bank, let alone a Westpac branch. Wish they did it would make my life easier!

All jokes aside, the NRL and ARLC need to step up immediately and improve their player social education program, it's obviously not cutting through and it's not making a difference.

Mate the state government spend a quillion a year on drink driving and road safety campaigns but you still get plenty of people doing the wrong thing.

All clubs have in house programs for a number of issues, but it’s the old story..you can lead horse to water but you can’t make them drink it.

Like with most things today people are looking at someone to shift the blame to.

I can see from the comments most wish stupidity was a crime, so they could be hanged from the nearest tree. I share your frustration, if media reports prove to be accurate? What I’d like to know is what role the players association play in ensuring responsible behaviour from players? Very quick to demand players share in the profit of the game, but what about the loss? Rashays restaurant chain deal was going to be $2m.

this is a very valid point....all well and good to bang the drum when they want something, but they slither away when there's trouble on the horizon....

The only way to deal with players that do these things is terminate there registration for 5 yrs immediately if found guilty and the clubs salary cap will be adjusted accordingly . You just keep showing these fools the door with a 5 yr ban ... then you will hear from the players association! crying fool .
If you want to clean this up get tough really tough and even then there will be brain dead players trying it on then they to can visit Centre link for the next 5 yrs .
But when you get someone like Greenberg writing character references for someone charged with drink driving who is putting all our families in harms way , of course there is no respect from your employees!

Those guys though are pretty screwed up individuals to go for school girls period and in that situation in my opinion it's really bad.

I don't know what you do though. How can you not know better ?

I wonder what the 2 girls are copping atm...have they ruined the reputations of 2 NRL players or ruined their own reputations at such a young age...I can imagine the conversation in the girls bathroom...how was it ,how was it ?while the boys are probably calling them names that most of us on hear are familiar with...(…….) rhymes with toll...and other colourful names...

I think you’re on the right track actually. More education and support for the employee along with strong, consistent ramifications for offenders. Zero tolerance- Mayor Giuliani style.

These are not acts of stupidity. These players made decisions to have sex with 17 year old school girls. This smacks of entitlement because as NRL players they are treated differently and in many cases looked up to by the community including impressionable girls. It is for this reason their behaviour needed to be beyond reproach. Instead we have them trawling for sex from perhaps naive country girls. Just a coincidence these things arise consistently at a few clubs? I believe these two should go for a year and the NRL undertake a review of the culture at the Bulldogs. I ask were these players suitable repß to interact with school girls? Who decided they were?

I don't expect angels, but I expect that grown men don't have it off with 17 year old school girls especially when representing the game. These idiots need to be shown the door and made an example of and if the players association want to play their role, then provide them councilling during the process.
