Player Managers

The whole NRL salary cap is a joke and needs a complete overhaul.
Anyone with half a brain can see that teams like the Roosters, Broncos and Storm are rorting the system with TPAs. It hasn't been a level playing field since the Super League war.
On a positive note however it's even more satisfying seeing the Roosters below us on the ladder!

You wonder if some coaches give any thought as to how come they have so many stars to coach given the salary cap? Are any questions asked?

All tpa's should be negotiated directly with nrl to ensure they are independent of the clubs. It is clear that clubs are organising tpa's on behalf of players.

Sorry larrycorowa, but you speak with too much commonsense.

I'm hearing you.
How about ban any Third Party Agreements all together ?
Also all player contracts be negotiated by the NRL, eliminating players managers ?

All club payments and tpa payments to be registered with and paid through a central nrl clearing house. If a player gets paid any cash then ban all involved. Players are at best guilty of willful blindness, at worst up to their neck in it.

With these investigations being under way, this is a perfect time for the NRL to dish out life bans on those who are caught to be cheating the system. Give a manager or two a life ban, watch them all run for the hills.

As for the cap, I really dont care how they go about it but I think if the game is to have any credibility, there has to be something put in place to allow clubs to hang onto any juniors they nurture. For example, James Tedesco. We nurtured him and we brought him through our junior teams. I honestly believe that the Wests Tigers should be allowed to use any means necessary to keep him without it affecting our cap.

If Joe Blow comes to Justin Pascoe and says, "Mate, I've got a lowsey $5m just laying around. I'll give you that to keep Teddy at the joint." The Tigers should be able to do that without any investigation by anyone and without any salary cap restrictions. He's our junior and we should have the right to keep him.

If we lose Tedesco because of money, I'll never watch another game of league again. I'll delete myself from these forums and I'll wipe league from my life forever.

I'm fully expecting heads to roll if he isn't re-signed. I don't see money being an issue with Farah's 900k becoming available. I think it will come down more to where the club is heading. You couldn't blame him if we're floundering near the bottom of the table and a top 4 side comes knocking. I have confidence in Pascoe.

Robbie should not and will not lose money next year he signed a contract for 950k why would any club sign him for that the Tigers let every one know they will pay big to get rid of him if I was Leeds I would only pay him 350K on the books next year let the Tigers pay the rest why waste money and if the Tigers have extra cash why not front load Teddys contract

I don't get it. If the TPA is for $5m and the person is not associated with the club then what's the problem, besides being able to find that person is there a restriction on the amount of TPA's that can be payed to a player ?

Currently, TPA's fall under the cap. What I'm suggesting is that any junior player the club has brought through it's junior teams and nurtured should be exempt from the cap and the club should hold the right to pay that player whatever it deems necessary to keep that player at the club.

If the NRL adopt this policy, it would turn clubs to focus on junior players and bring them through rather than buy them when they hit grade. Teams like the Roosters would be forced to invest in their junior leagues and set up nurseries outside of their area.

Imagine the NRL forcing clubs to promote the game to kids??? What a concept!!!

…... be forced to invest in their junior leagues and set up nurseries outside of their area......

The only problem with this is nurseries outside there area are usually under control of someone else. They would have to encroach on other clubs areas... Clubs like us

My understand is that tpa's are outside the cap, hence why large clubs with a big corporate following find it easier to sign players. The idea of tpa's is fine and restricting a players ability to sign these would probably be a restraint of trade ie. A sports shoe company Approaches a player to promote their shoes.

But the way tpa's are being used is that the club needs to find $200k in tpa's to sign a player and it approaches its sponsors and supporters to find the money for the player. This is where it gets messy because some tpa's are done on the basis that the club will in turn buy products or services off these companies.

TPA's are separate from the cap provided they are not from an associate/sponsor of the club and have no ceiling.

Imagine the NRL promoting the game to kids, now that would be a concept. Maybe they could even give a thought to promoting the game in rural areas.

My mistake, that's what you get when you "assume" you know everything!

With that being said, I really cant see any issues arising with local juniors being salary cap exempt. All I can see is a win/win situation for everyone involved.

Just doing a bit of a personal project identifying the manager/agency for each of our players. Can anyone shed any light on the one's I haven't filled?
