PLAYERS FIGHT THROUGH PAIN BARRIER

Prop Aaron Woods has laid the benchmark for a high standard of pre-season training after leading by example at today’s Wests Tigers Strongman Challenge.

In very humid conditions at Concord, Woods skippered his six man group to victory after contesting a series of punishing drills under the eye of Wests Tigers Strength and Conditioning Coach John Skandalis.

Players were split into groups of backs and forwards with the forwards taking the honours.

“It was torture,” Woods said afterwards.

“The forearms were shot but it was a very good team bonding exercise. It is just good to be back in training with the boys.”

The drills ranged from flipping tractor like 300 kilo tyres over 80 metres for 12 minutes, carrying twin pine logs with two inch handles, carrying water filled beer kegs to lifting extremely heavy ocean liner ropes.

Twenty-year-old full-back Lincoln Port, who played in the Cairns A-grade competition this year, stunned his team-mates with his ability to run with the keg placed behind his head.

“Lincoln was unbelievable. I have never someone carry it like he did,’’ said Wests Tigers Strength and Conditioning Assistant Coach Luke Portese.

“He was running with it and he only weighs 78 kilos. All of the boys did really well in what was a very hard session.”

Winger Beau Ryan said the session was extremely good for team bonding.

“It is good to get into a session like that the first week back. It sorted a few of the boys out from the men,’’ Ryan said.

“The logs were torture. Pre-season training before Christmas is always hard."

Good to see the boys back and getting stuck in. They were showing a little bit of video footage on Foxsports News and Joel Reddy is looking BIG

Bit of a write up and picture of Lincoln Port there. 20 year old fullback who's signed with BRET.
I'd never heard of him…

Good to hear Woods is showing leadership skills too. Very impressive for his age.

Future captain material IMO. Mature head on young shoulders, not dissimilar to Lawrence in this regard.

another view of the session:

Sheens faces early selection dilemmas as Tigers show strength

THEY have already been installed as premiership favourites by some betting agencies, but the Wests Tigers head into the 2012 season with uncertainty surrounding two key positions.

The exit of Robert Lui to North Queensland, as well as Tim Moltzen's change of heart to remain at the Tigers, will leave coach Tim Sheens with plenty of thinking to do before the round one clash against Cronulla, likely to be at Leichhardt Oval.

For years, the Tigers have struggled to cement a 1-6-7 combination but looked like they had finally settled on the right partnership with Moltzen at the back and Benji Marshall and Lui in the halves. But Lui's assault charge has led to his being released to link up with the Cowboys, with a handful of players now fighting for the fullback and halfback positions.

Moltzen's dynamic finish to the 2011 season in the No.1 jersey will make it hard for Sheens to move him into the halfback role, but there is plenty of talent waiting to slot into the fullback position should Moltzen make the transition.

Beau Ryan, Mitch Brown, as well as Parramatta recruits Joel Reddy and Tom Humble, are all capable of playing at the back.

Reddy has spent most of his career in the centres, but given Blake Ayshford and Chris Lawrence are certainties to hold on to their starting jumpers, Reddy has emerged as a genuine contender to play fullback.

''A few things obviously changed after I was signed, but I'm just worried about getting fit at the moment and getting as strong as I can,'' Reddy said. ''I think once Sheensy comes back from the Kangaroo tour I'll have more of an idea of where I'm at. But for me, fullback, back row, centre, winger … it really doesnt bother me.''

Humble, who feels most comfortable playing in the halves, has also spent some time at fullback during his short NRL career.

After a gruelling strongman challenge at pre-season training yesterday, Humble said he would take the opportunity to play in the No.1 with open arms.

The right to partner Marshall in the halves is expected to be a three-man battle between Humble, Moltzen and young Jacob Miller.

The Moltzen contract saga would've been of direct interest to Humble and Miller, and the former Eel didn't deny paying attention to the tug-of-war between the Dragons and his new club. ''Yeah, definitely,'' Humble said. ''One, because I was going to the club, but also because that has a baring on my opportunities and the positions I play. But he's been in great form so if I'm lucky enough to get the opportunity to play with Tim [Moltzen], I'll appreciate it.''

Ryan, one of Moltzen's closest friends, said it was unfortunate his pal's name got ''dragged through the mud'', but understood why the Dragons were so disappointed to lose his services for the next three years.

''Definitely they're upset,'' Ryan said. ''They were a bit down they didn't get him but that's life, you've got to move on. They really wanted him there but at the end of the day they can't sit on their hands.''

Moltzen shoulder really looked like it was in all sorts carrying those 30kg logs, and 75kg beer kegs…...

Our stocks for this year are phenominal, all the boys look really keen and for probably the first time ever there is competition for every spot bar of course our genuine superstars. I can't remember the last time we had 3-4 genuine challenges for fullback, wing and halfback plus lots of boys fighting it out for bench spots as well...roll on the pre-season!!

im surprised his even carrying the weights with his "shoulder injury thats going to keep him out for six months", but in all seriousness good to see the depth and competition. just hope we get to see them play if the first choice isnt performing

Here are some photos from the day, with all shots captured by Mark Evans.

Check out big John Grant in the background, he's huge

Have a look at the video on the Foxsports page, he towers over Ryan.

I can never take Beau Ryan seriously when he gives an interview.
The cameraman definitely had a thing for Jacob Miller.
I think its safe to say this is the strongest squad we have ever had, lets hope they stay healthy.

Grant is 6"5, it takes a lot of people by surprise when he's standing several inches taller than most in the Tigers side.

I knew he was big, just didn't realise he was that big in comparison to the others. Can only be a good sign, its not as though Beau Ryan is the smallest winger in the comp…

Funny thing is, didn't Moltzen have a reported shoulder/elbow injury which needed surgery that would've been 6 months rehab and was the reason Dragons weren't keen on him??

Linc Port hails from Cape York, Coen and Hope Vale. Picked up in the Cape playing for Aurukun Kang Kang by David Westley (Roos Coach) made player of the year in Cairns. HAS GREAT POTENTIAL!!
