Players who never reached their potential

Reading the thread about the best player of 20 years got me thinking about players whose career’s were cut short, who if not for injury could have been great players. Being a Tigers fan, obviously the one that stands out is Simon Dwyer. Like James Dean, burst on to the scene, looked like he could have been anything, then bam. And you are forever wondering about the heights he could have reached. Rowdy is another one pre hip injury.

And an obscure one. John Doyle. Played for the Cowboys in the late 90’s-early 00’s. Played some big games for QLD, but his knees were shot and retired before he was 30.

Simon Dwyer is an obvious one. He could have been a Kangaroo back rower by now, no doubt.

One that will upset a few people is Tim Moltzen. If not for injuries and confidence issues as a result, he could have been very good.

Immortal, not that good. But I always thought he could have actually been very good with a bit of luck. Just wasn't to be.

For me, it's Owen Craigie. A totally insane talent with all the skills who was killing it in first grade at age 17.

He could score the winning try, kick the winning goal or create something out of nothing. A real pleasure to watch on his day.

Sadly, off field pressures and injuries limited what he achieved.

Still remember the night we came from 24-0 down against Newcastle at Ctown. Craigie beat them on his own. One of the best individual performances I have ever seen.

Mark Geyer - Even though Geyer played for NSW and Australia if he had his head screwed on properly could have been one of the best to play the game - when he was right he was amazing don't think I have ever seen a team reliant on a backrower the way the Reds were reliant on him

He was my first reaction.

When he came onto the scene, I thought Sinclair could have been one of the real Tigers greats. I think the club thought that too.

Him and Tim Brasher in the same backline - amazing talent.
