Live Exports of Sheep has raised its head again…

I personally don't have a problem with the practice of sacrificing a lamb as part of an ritual or a means to a meal. But Im not sure if this is what our farmers in Australia breed sheep for.

I reckon if some cultures choose to practice this, they should breed the beast themselves, and Australian live exports should only exist to wholesale meat suppliers who intend to kill the beasts in a manner as outlined by our laws.

Whats everyones thoughts on this?

Agree on this. Humane slaughter should be a term of sale.

I don't think we should be in the live export game. I doubt there is any way of shipping them that isn't inherently cruel to the animals. If there is a demand for livestock slaughtered under halal rules then we should be doing that onshore where it can be properly monitored.

Unfortunately we are heavily committed to live exporting and the farmers make a great deal of money from it

The easiest way is that we insist that we have some control of the slaughtering process to ensure it is kept humane

We used to make money from whaling too. People used to make money from slavery. You can't continue to support an industry based solely on its economic benefits. There has to be other considerations.

We need to remember these beasts are bred purely for wholesale export…

Well I'm curious now… What makes them different to domestic cattle/sheep? In anycase if there was a difference I'm suggesting the slaughtering be done onshore rather than sending live cattle/sheep with the terrible death rates.

I don't think that's a fair comparison. The professions you mention don't actually cause the misfortune in the first place (well not on purpose you'd hope). I'd like to think that doctors and dentists make their money prevening misfortune to others.

Live exporting creates the misfortune in and of itself. It's an ugly industry and my personal belief is we're best out of it.

But if properly regulated by its own industry , whats the difference between local abattoirs and overseas abattoirs

I'm guessing you eat meat Yoss ??

Well for two reasons:

1 - The process of exporting is a significant part of the problem. The death rates are horrendous and the conditions awful.
2 - The evidence suggests we're (I mean Australia) are not able to effectively regulate conditions in overseas abattoirs.

Yes I eat meat - that's not relevant. I'm not opposed to the slaughter of animals for the purpose of human consumption and I've not said anything to the contrary. I'm saying that I don't see how live exporting can be done humanely.

Well that's my point , we go in and tell them we aren't prepared to deal with them unless they meet our standards

It honestly can't be that hard

It has been up to this point. It's kind of hard to launch a surprise check on a facility in Jordan.

I wasn't alluding to a leadership challenge from Rudd Yoss, Rudd will do enough harm just being there in my opinion

I dunno. He had a reason to be destabalising before - he doesn't now.

Seems like I'm not the only person who believes Rudd should just walk away Thanks for backing me up Nicola Roxon

Nicola Roxon would best serve the party that's set her up for the rest of her live by shutting the hell up. She's well known to be a massive Gillard supporter - she should stop telling other people what to do and try to adjust to being a nobody a little better.

Seriously the petty public slanging has to stop

The massive hypocrisy from the coalition goes on and on

http://www.theguardian.com/business/2013/oct/23/australias-debt-ceiling-the-right-decision-but-with-a-touch-of-irony

In opposition he considered attempting to block a raise to the debt ceiling of 50b, doing his best to emulate the tea party

Now in government he sees fit to raise it by 200b without blinking

He can bleat 'its labor's fault' all he wants but the fact is, if he wanted to cut the debt, h could easily do so. He just doesn't want to make any tough decisions, lest the public find out that their election promise of 'we can provide everything Labor can, but cheaper' is found out for the bullplop it was.

Is it just me or this new government doing everything it can to get the voters offside?

Expense rorts
now "I read it on Wikipedia"

far out. These people are supposed to be experienced, educated leaders right??

Claiming personal expenses would see anybody else fired from their job.
Quoting Wikipedia would see a student, academic or professional expelled or fired.
