I have a disturbing vision of Julia Gillard singing 'I will always love you' after seeing the front page of the Telegraph today…

What I cant understand is, why was nobody arrested after the incident of rushing at Julia & Tony?

How is that possible??

Imagine if that happened in the US, to the president, every person running at him would likely have been shot.

On what charge? Banging on a window? Yelling too loudly? Apart from maybe failing to disobey a direction from the police there really wasn't a crime there. Theft of one shoe as well…

What would they have done if it was left go on though? I cant see any other country letting people get off this easily when obviously threatening their PM/President.

and "failing to disobey a direction from police"??? if you mean failing to obey police orders, i think thats a fair decent crime, especially when the safety of the countries leaders are in question.

We have gone soft as a country Ink. It is depressing and IMO that is disgraceful.
Kaiser I may have inadvertantly generalised but went back on that this morning. Dont say you have never done it…you regularly call people scum who follow South Sydney...just for following a footy team! I called a collection of people scum who sit on their arse in a shanty town created by themselves getting loaded every day until something big happens when they stick their heads up and create a ruckus. I was having a go at the activists and to a lesser extent the appologists Ink mentioned who are ruining this great country with their airy fairy idealism.

Amazingly racist? thats rubbish mate. This country was born and created through the hard work of IMMIGRANTS. We have grown up with and continue to work and live with people claiming backgrounds from all over the world. Maybe we are a bit rough with our language ie wogs, lebs, abo's etc...but these names do not carry the venom that generations past suffered through. I am regularly called skippy by mates and take no offence at all. Obviously being a pussy who gets offended by everything isnt in my make up. If you think we are as racist as you do then I could only conclude you have never lived overseas in a country that is not anglo based. We have it pretty damned good here. I am of the same mind set as Ink. Those that have a go suceed in Australia and live comfortable lives. Some even make it rich. No matter what your background. Your view of your fellow Australians is a disgrace.

One last thing...how in the hell is peoples fear of the unknown entity that is the boat people irrational and unfounded? If they are genuine we accept them. If they are shady, i.e. those that have purposly hidden their identity then we lock them up until we can work out who they are. Are they gang leaders looking to initialise operations over here? Are they terrorists looking to do the same? Are they criminals running from the law? How are we supposed to know when they lob up here, cant speak english and have no identification at all? They all seem to have money...why not enter through the correct channels and become a contributing partner in this countries continued developement? Before you start carrying on, I am well aware that a large contingent of them are genuine refugees. But what of those who are not?

This is what you call racism? Now that is pathetic...

Well said Zoe if this happened in the US or China etc…they would have been shot for sure.

i often wonder just how many people have been through the red heart and witnessed how many of the indigenous australians live. quite a few years ago when travelling through the centre to see people living in dwellings made of sheets of corrugated iron, virtually no sanitation, kids with no hope of a future was really quite depressing. i know that conditions have improved since but indigenous australians still have one the highest rates of infant mortality anywhere in the world and a life expectancy that is about 40 years less than white australians. even though the protest actions yesterday were uncalled for and rebutted by mant indigenous elders, i can see why there is so much passion by indigenous australians for a better life ( although i all i could see were reporters and police when gillard and abbott were being scurried off ). imo the protest and subsequent events gave a free kick to the rednecks in oz society to go off in their usual rantings. a society that is becoming more and more xenophobic, less tolerant, and dare i say it, hateful.

oz is all the more poorer across a whole range of social issues after yesterdays events.

I have Pearl and guess what? they arent the only ones who are doing it tough out there.

What is your point? What should be done? I swear if you blokes hate this country so much then you should head elsewhere and live for a while. I gaurantee you will be back as it is one of the best countries in the world.

Good to see you chip in with the others claiming that those who dont agree with you are rednecks. What makes you so sophisticated in your views?

IMO its the weak minded pussies who are letting this country down. The 'rednecks' who you refer to are the majority of the population who are also responsible for its continued sucess.

Fair call on the South Sydney comment… I got nothing on that one

I see no problem in colloquialisms, such terms as Lebo, Skippy, Wogs as you have suggested I have no issue with please don't mistaken me for the 'politically correct' group... I hate that stuff just as much as it appears you do.

I also concede that perhaps racism is the wrong term and do apologise, perhaps xenophobic is a more accurate way to describe my thoughts towards the Australian people. I also refer to the country, not necessarily the individual. One of the biggest factors in my comments come from main stream media. Especially when I listen to stooges on 2GB promote so much fear it makes me sick, or read the garbage I do in the Tele. Individually we are some of the most accommodating people in the world, make no mistake about that.

Am I guilty of racists remarks, yes I am. I am not trying to play the purist card here.

What I find amazing with this country is the amount of press time the whole 'Boat People' topic receives! The Country is fixated on the issue... why? Do people really care that much or are we being forced the issue? We are very backwards in how we deal with refugees when compared to other nations and I think it needs to change. The reasons you mentioned as to the fear people have towards refugess would most definitely be reasonable; I definitely do not refute that, however I don't believe these reasons to be shared by the majority and especially the media.

This is merely my own observation and thoughts. Which I am entitled to and for that I am a disgrace? Pshhhh

Who says we don't believe it to be one of the best countries in the world? The way you carry on in this thread champ would suggest you feel quite the opposite.

as a 6th generation australian i love oz mate, i just dont like where we are heading. we have a pm who does not have the courage to stand up for what is it right on a number of social issues and an unscrupulous populist opposition leader who would be pm, thats what i am talking about !!!

sorry for having my opinion and what makes you qualified to speak on the behalf of the majority of australians and if you are really typical of more than half of australians i rest my case your honour.

Maybe we are backwards in our dealings with refugees but I put that more down to the explosion in numbers of boats in a time of great fear created through global terrorism. Has it been whipped up and overexaggerated…possibly so but the fact remainds that most of the refugees are coming from countries associated with these acts and a lot are getting on boats from Indonesia which has had its own problems. You cant blame people for being concerned. The riots in the detention centers are doing nothing to eleviate the issue either. Are there sections of the community that can be seen as xenophobic in their views? absolutely and unfortunately in this day and age it is almost a subliminal defense mechanism....and that mindset does have to evolve. I just do not like the term racist country as Australia is essentially a melting pot of every nationality in the world living and working together. You really do not get that in many other countries.

BTW mate I didnt mean that you were a disgrace, merely the view on this country being a redneck haven of hatred. I am hearing it more and more and it doesnt sit well. It seems it is becoming cool to deride this place and I dont see why.

Have to say the best comment on this whole situation was on the Daily Telegraph website: "If we are going to have a riot every time Tony Abbott has a thought bubble we are in for a rocky future."

Plenty of people live in cities similarly…they rely on handouts, someone else always doing it for them.

Not much in the desert, no job, no nothing....do something about your situation, move somewhere the opportunitys are better

This isnt somalia....but some choose to live like it is

We can only hope. I think he is genuinely the best candidate to be PM. Hopefully he chucks a Rudd-on-Beazley and deposes Abbott 12 months before the election. Right now his best bet is to sit back and let Abbott jump from gaffe to gaffe.
