Politis slams “jealous” critics

AP Eagers is a smart company with a great CEO. They're doing a fair bit of takeover activity and Uncle Nick's wealth has swelled as a result.

I dare say that if Nick passes, I expect there will be a sizable endowment fund for the Roosters. Nick could potentially set up a fund that would cover them in perpetuity.

Just hopefully Harry T has one lined up for the Tigers!!

Read somewhere awhile ago that he has organised ongoing support for the Rorters well into the future.

No such thing planned by Harry I would think. Harry I would imagine he is still browned off over the BLC.

@Snake
Whatever would happen with TPA's within or outside of a cap no one can stop someone from giving a gift to a player. It is not illegal. John Singleton identified gifts as the difference. Coordinated 'gifts' may be unethical as far as the spirit of the rules are concerned but they are perfectly legal and would be impossible to police in any case.

@Go_You_Good_Things Uncle Nick also does not mention that these 16,17,18 year old kids, that he has lured from other teams, not just from school carnivals, he got Lui from us, and then who actually make it to first grade, have upgraded payments ie Mitchell , whose manager will be asking for what their players are worth, which still does not explain how they all fit under the sombrero

Uncle Nick also dances around the point that yeah, they have some guys they brought in as kids, but also 5 of their Top 6 players were purchased for big money from opponents - Tedesco, Cronk, Keary, JWH, Crichton (Latrell rounding out the Top 6).

That would be like me saying I built my house entirely by myself, except for the 4 walls and roof.

I'm glad it gets to him, because he says he doesn't, therefore it actually does. If it didn't get to him he wouldn't offer excuses.

What about the Joey Manu story today in SMH where Roosters flew him in from NZ every weekend to play SG Ball. No wonder young Roosters players like the club, given that the Roosters can afford to fly them around the place and don't make them hunker down in some sort of shared accommodation like all the other povvo clubs. I can only imagine what else the Roosters paid for when young Joey Manu was in need.

Can be fixed tomorrow. Players get rated by NRL using a points system.

You can pay them whatever you want, but they have a point value and each team has a points limit of 1000.

"Sorry Teddy, we can pay you 3mil a year of course, but we only have points space of 30, and you are rated at 80 points."

That would soon sort the crap about money. But you know it won't happen. RLPA will see it as a way of restricting player rights and will sooky la la. You know who runs the game anyway. Thugs, grubs and germs pretending to be upstanding citizens.

They stopped Pascoe giving a gift to Robbie!

I have been beating this drum for years. If we can’t have a transfer system and a draft system due restraint of trade..we must have a point system

@Spud_Murphy I agree, Harry does a bit for the club but nothing like what Nick does for the rorters.

They invited Politis onto the board and he is now the chairman. We just want harrys money but wont let him have a say on how to spend it.

Smart club v dumb club.

Discussed many times including a week or two ago - it won't work.

Bet your bottom dollar that arbitrary points allocation to players would be challenged in court - it's a potential restraint in trade just like anything else.

Already the amount of complete nonsense about the NRL getting referees to influence outcomes, literally every bad call nowadays and some muppet says "oh the NRL clearly wants TEAM X to win".

Imagine the furore over NRL-decided player ratings!

Points systems are essentially fantasy football - rate a player based on certain criteria that somebody deems to be worth something. What about Origin footballers vs Kangaroos? Tackle busts vs line breaks? Tries vs goals?

If you say that Tedesco is worth 80 points, that limits his capacity to earn, literally. It may points-price him out and he'd have no options, he wouldn't be able to take a pay cut if he decided that was worthwhile.

And what about changes in player form over a season, or over the course of their contract? How can you plan for the future adequately if you sign Kalyn Ponga to a 4-year deal starting at 30 points and at the end he is worth 100 points?

And with no control on the actual money, just watch Broncos and Roosters sign all the best players in each points bracket.

Blurring the lines between Australian law and NRL rules in this thread, gifts to players is legal provided it's not claimed as a tax deduction from an ATO perspective under Australian law however providing or offering gifts to players by the club, associates of the club or club sponsors to induce a lower contract value is cap cheating under NRL rules.

Do we know that Harry actually wants to dictate how the money is spent? I saw an interview with him a few years back and he said that basically he asks Tigers where they want to spend the money he offers.

Harry might be a complete rugby league nuffie.

Lastly, does Harry actually want to be that involved with Tigers? He's basically up to his eyebrows in Meriton any day of the week already and he's 86 years old.

So, presumably, if a gift is offered by a club supporter for example, who is not an associate or a sponsor of the club, then that's OK. I imagine that leaves a lot of scope for gifts in the case of well connected clubs.

@fibrodreaming If it was easy all clubs would be doing it, Politis gets away with it because of the people he knows who can distance themselves from the club and offer inducements, ask Gerry Harvey how it's done  .

With Politis' position it's not difficult, buy a product or service from an associate for $100,000, that associate then offers a player $100,000 for a bit job that takes a couple of hours to perform over a period, presto, done.

The initial $100,000 would be higher than that as each has to pay taxes on it to keep it legal with the ATO but you get the drift.

All made up but not hard to imagine how these things can go down.

*Politis to Joe:* Mate I need a light installed in my house.
Joe: No worries Nick, got a great bloke in mind who could supervise the job, that'll be $110,000.
*Politis:* Thanks mate, great deal.

*Joe to Tedesco:* G'day James, Joe the electrician here, a mutual friend referred you, could you to do some supervising work for me, just supervise a light installation, just a couple of hours work and we'll be sweet.
Tedesco: Cool, no worries.
*Joe:* There you go, you did great, customer is very happy, here's your $100,000 for the job.
Tedesco: Thanks, can always do with the extra cash to get my teeth fixed.
*Joe:* Here is the number of a great Orthodondist James, my mate Nick sees him all the time, will do you a great deal.

It just comes to one thing .... only way to police is for NRL to get the access to players earnings specified in their annual ATO tax returns. If the player is fluffing them then he is dealing with double trouble.

@momo_amp_medo
What if the 'gifts' are not dollars and cents but happy meals or a new scooter? Well organised gifts would be hard to trace and even harder to attribute as a payment in kind.

G'day @momo_amp_medo: re your "get access to players earnings" 100% agree.

Hope you are having a great comedy cruise  /holiday :fa-smile-o:

I read somewhere that the NRL won't allow Harry T to become a to provide any TPA's due to his previous sponsorship of WT's.
It's just Toddy being "Fair" again.
