Potter faces anguishing choice to replace Moltzen

Wests Tigers coach Mick Potter has to decide whether to take a gamble on 18-year-old sensation Luke Brooks or recall Jacob Miller for Friday's showdown with Canterbury.

With halfback Tim Moltzen set to miss the rest of the season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament against the Broncos on Saturday night – and Benji Marshall and Braith Anasta out injured – Potter has a huge decision to make before the clash against the Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium.

Robbie Farah could slot into the No.7 jersey with Masada Iosefa his likely replacement, but the genuine halfback options stop at Miller and Brooks.

Brooks, considered by the Tigers to be the club's long-term halfback, has played six of the seven games in the Holden Cup this season, and also represented NSW in the under-20s State of Origin game in Penrith last weekend. While Potter refused to rule him out of contention to replace Moltzen in the No.7, he admits it will be a big ask to throw him to the dogs in such a pressure-cooker match for the Tigers.

He said he would talk to under-20s coach Todd Payten before making a decision on the talented teenager. "I'd have to talk to Todd a bit more," Potter said. "Luke's had some little assignments to complete in the game's previous to this. He's progressing okay. I'm not sure if he's ready for that jump yet but he'd probably grab it with open arms and do his best and probably do an OK job.

"I want to get him physically ready otherwise he's going to be a real target just with that step up. He's certainly got some real good skill, there's no doubting that."

Miller, who was dropped to the NSW Cup after the Tigers' round-four loss to Manly, played against the Auckland Vulcans in New Zealand on Saturday, and by all reports, struggled to set the world alight.

"He's only had one game and he played in Auckland today," Potter said. "I'm going to have a look at that vision and see how he's gone there."

The Tigers have 10 first-grade players in the club's rehabilitation ward. Chris Lawrence (hamstring), Blake Ayshford (ankle tendon) and Moltzen (knee) on Saturday night joined Marshall, Anasta, Marika Koroibete, Matt Bell, Matt Groat, Keith Galloway and Lote Tuqiri on the injured list.

But Potter refused to use his side's growing injury toll as an excuse for their lacklustre performance against the Broncos in the 20-10 loss at Campbelltown Stadium.

"We're disappointed we didn't get the result," Potter said. "I don't want to focus on the injuries as much as our performance. Although they came up with some poor stuff, there was some really brave stuff. I made a decision with nine minutes to go that we need to play a bit of footy to snatch the game and get some players on that could offload and pass and unfortunately three minutes later we lose a player with an ankle injury [and we had to play with 12 men].

"You have a bit of a gamble there and it didn't pay off for us tonight."

I think realistically we have to go with Miller who has trained and played with the side. There will already be too much inexeperience to bring in Brooks i feel. Others may disagree.

The most stable halves pairing we've had on the field in recent history is Sironen and Marshall.
If Marshall is good to go on Friday night, I'd be trotting out:

7\. Marshall
6\. Sironen

It is a big call to bring in Brooks and I think his immaturity showed through when the game was on the line last night in the 20's.

Miller is the obvious option.

I have tickets already but if Iosefa seriously gets a call I will give it a miss

6\. Sirro, 7\. Farah 9\. Luani i wouldn't be too upset with unless this 'backs curse' strikes farah…then i'll be pissed!

We've really got nothing to lose, at this point out season is pretty much gone. If Benji is right next week I'd go 6 Benji, 7 Brooks. No Benji then play Miller.
However heard on 2GB last night if we end up giving Brooks a shot then he's match payments will be included in our cap for this season therefore putting us over?
Surely there can be a way to give him a shot without any possible cap dramas considering the majority of it is sitting in rehab.

There is 2 tiers of cap discretions Tuiaki4life This would be a 2nd tier discetion and possibly a minor fine

Obviously the Melbourne and Bulldogs cases were completely different situations and 1st tier offences

Sironen would be fine as a running option but outside Moltzen or Anasta he doesn't have anyone creative. I would stretch that to Marshall as well. For Sironen to be an effective 6 the only people at the club who could be his 7 counterpart are Miller and Brooks.

In special circumstance you can apply to the NRL for cap relief

really? well we should get it right…i mean 200k extra or so considering we've lost our entire back line bar a winger and some forwards too.

Smeg doesn't mean it is like some sort of Centrelink payment , what he means you can go over the cap with your own money if players are injured etc and not get fined

As someone else said , can we spare any dough ??

Look let's face it, no matter who he plays where we are in deep s..t. siro or Anasta in the halves pHlease!!

Look I'd love to see brooks get a go but I think miller is probably the best choice given the circumstances but even then who knows, we have so many rookies in our team at the moment - I mean tedesco, Koroibete, Sironen, sue, spence, Buchanan. He'll even woods is only 23 and has played only 2 years of fg.

We are going to struggle for the next few weeks till we get a couple of troops back at least

If Marshall doesn't play, I'd give Miller another run. It's quite clear that he doesn't call over Marshall and Farah and if Benji is missing, it may force Farah to go to him more often. Could do his confidence some good.

If Marshall plays though, I'd be giving Brooks a start as Miller will just get closed out of the game.
