Potter Gone - Contract Not renewed! Official!

Whether he can coach or not there is too much baggage in keeping him on. To quote from the movie "We are Marshall" where the coach addresses his team after a loss:

"Now I’m proud of you. But I will not accept losing with you. Because there’s only one thing they judge us on. There’s only one thing people remember. And it ain’t how we play the game."

In the end, nice guy or not, injuries or not, we didn't win enough games.

What a load! As if Potter had any chance of making a similar quote "Now I’m proud of you. But I will not accept losing with you" with the situation he inherited. He had no choice in the player roster, had no choice in his assistants, was undermined from above. Complete BS.[/quote
No say in Keith Leluia, Pat Richards, Corey Paterson, Martin Tapau? Definitely no say in our juniors because they were already in the system. Mick cant be blamed for everything that went wrong in the second half of the season but as head coach he must be a leader that inspires the team and earns the respect of the assistants - results on the field don't support that. Injuries didn't help Mick's cause - nor did Gordon Tallis.

Does anyone have Potter's email address

I wouldn't mind sending an email of condolence and thanks

He was a class act and deserved better

@cqtiger,as I said in an earlier thread,Mayer I think has his own agendas,if Parish is our next coach then what I have said is true…. :bash

If they sack Potter for either Parish, Kidwell or Payten the club can go and get f'd

If they sign a coach whose submissive and not a hard ass who doesn't care whose toes he steps on for the betterment of the team, the club can go and get f'd

@ Well said Happy I hope you go through with what you said I think he would appreciate it from some of the fan base..

I am very disappointed in the decision not to renew Potter's coaching contract for at least one more year. There is no way West Tigers have any chance to perform with the years of crap that has been part of the joint venture club since a day after it began, not withstanding 2005\. 2014 has been a disaster at the Board and CEO level. Jesus Christ could not have done any better than Potter. It would be poetic justice if there are no takers to take on the club in 2015\. Who would be stupid enough to apply. I am just sorry for the players.

Newtown, granted most of us don't have the credentials to be head coach or c.e.o.,but having said that over the past few seasons the ones that do have don't seem to be able to use their credentials either..Head coaches being sacked mid season or early in the contracts ..CEO leaving before their contracts are fulfilled,it all seems to me that the internals of a any particular club do what they want, when they want….what the hell is a contract or superior credentials if you get pole axed if the board don't like you or what your doing...I suppose it has to suit them even if they don't have the said credentials.............

Did not Tim Sheens get pole axed even though (i) he had another couple of years to go on his existing contract and (ii) had some years earlier coached the side to a premiership. Compare this to Potter who didn't even have a contract when the Board decided not to renew it. Also compare Sheens winning percentage in his last two year of coaching WT to Potter's two years with WT. If you play or support rugby league you have to follow the referee's decision.

What were the percentages Newtown ?

Potter managed 17 wins from 48 games for 36%. I am sure Sheens last two years with WT was much better than that.

@Magpiecol,that is only your opinion on Potter,I think he did a great job with what he had to put up with….as for moving on yes lets, but I will not support a coach that Mayer recommends,as I said before the new board took his recommendations on Potter,I think he has his own agendas, only my opinion as a forum member......

True Tiger what if new coach has a successful year and the team performs well? I get your a Potter supporter, but surely when the dust settles you cant lay blame on any of this with the newly appointed coach.

Potter had to go.

Not because I think he was a poor coach, or he deserved to go but because at the end of the day…..someone is held to account for the circus going on in our club. Grant Mayer is not going to put his hand up, or will the board members who found it hard just signing our own players up to contracts before they started signing elsewhere. In the past 2-3 years the Wests Tigers have been a big joke and this started before Potter came along so you cannot blame him.

Potter as a head coach never had normal control of a footy team as most coach's do. He was severley hobbled by the CEO & Board and at the end of the day it made it impossible for him to perform at his best when even the players thought he was a dead man walking and would not last.

On field performances were interesting. Some say he had no tactics.....well in our 3 best wins where we smashed the opposition...Souths, Manly & the Bulldogs he certainly must have had some idea of how to drive the team.

After the fiasco before the Dragons game the performances really dropped off, but thats no surprise, he was supposed to have been sacked after the dragons game regardless of the result and then the whole thing went into meltdown.

Interestingly now....the club says " the head coach will have full control of the playing roster and assistants etc etc.....pity you didn't offer the same to Potter.

In the end the right decision was made to get rid of Potter, but only because the actions of the club had made him a poisoned chalice. They had screwed him over in front of the players and even had he retained his job you can imagine what would have happened after every loss next year....."is Potter going to get the axe this week" it just would have continued the circus.

We now have a new board, will have a new coach and the pressure is now on Mayer to be more professional than he was this year. He probably should also be gone in all honesty though.

Potter may be gone but Mayer and the old Board should also hang theirs heads in shame. Word of advice for them....try and not back stab the NEW COACH for at least a little while this time.

Anyway....as supporters we will all get on board and get behind the new coach and the players and hope 2015 is more exciting on the field rather than behind the scenes.

I'd be inquiring about Steve Folkes.
We played great when he was here last.

At the moment he is coaching the Jillaroos, i'm sure he would prefer an NRL head coaching gig.

They would be screaming from the reaming with Folkes , the players would drop tools if he was named

@Telltails,I said in a earlier thread if Parish gets the job then Mayer has his own agenda in regards to Parish having worked with him prior. If we appoint a very good NRL coach with experience then I will gladly support him 100 percent,as long as we go through the correct selection process and employ the coach with the best credentials

And not due to his coaching ability either.
More so because they wouldn't like the hard work.
He'd sort out a lot of what we need imo.

Mick had a go but in the end had to go.

In business I find that there has to be someone to blame no matter what amount of bad luck that conspires against an individual and beyond their control. Unfortunately in this instance:

To sate the masses there often has be blood
History is written by the victors

I have often wondered whether the heat was actually on Meyer to perform and he skilfully (and ruthlessly) diverted the spotlight on MP to deflect from his own inadequacies. Time will tell now as there is no more hiding.
