Potter Is King Of The Kids

Wests Tigers NRL Coach Mick Potter found some time last week to visit over 1000 kids who were taking part in last Thursday’s Tiger Tag Gala Day at Morrison Bay Park in Putney.

In just his second day on the job after the Club announced his appointment last Wednesday, Potter still wanted to make the time to support the game at grass roots level.

He said it was vitally important for the game as a whole to have a thriving junior development system.

“You want the kids involved because ultimately that is where all your NRL players come from. Young kids just loving the game who love playing. That’s what it’s all about,” Potter said.

Boys and girls from 12 schools in the Inner West from Year 3-6 participated on the day organised by Wests Tigers and Australian Rugby League Development staff.

A special thanks goes to Strathfield South High School and Hunters Hill High who provided 35 students to referee the games. NRL Referee Jason Robinson was on hand to lend his support to the young referees who will now continue to hone their officiating skills with the help of the ARLD staff.

NRL ambassador Mario Fenech and Tigers legend Paul Sironen were also in attendance but they didn’t attract anywhere near the attention from the kids that the new NRL coach did.

He posed for numerous photographs and signed countless autographs but admitted that he would not have had it any other way.

“Introducing the concept of Rugby League to kids of this age is fantastic. Hopefully we can hold onto them as they come through so they either become supporters, players or social players of Rugby League,” he said.

Potter is already making a big impression. Great Work by the new coach.

In most cases I would have thought players would attend these types of events, but it's great to see the coach rock up out there.

Tim sheens had absolutely no time for events like this. What a breath of fresh air MP is. He is already creating a positive vibe from school kids to 1st grade. Has said all the right things and identified all the areas that we need to address as a club. Let's just hope that the club can give him the support he needs to make it all work.

It also says to the Playing Squad that if he is prepared to do it because it is important so should they!
