Putting our 2022 ability to tackle and score points aside there is one glaring issue that we lacked; leadership! In my opinion if do intend to "develop" ourselves out of this rut we need a strong leader; a Boyd Cordner type of leader is probably what we need right now with a Cam Smith being mentored in the junior ranks.

Let's face it the 5 man leadership team was a disaster. JT, for mine, was a coach follower as opposed to a leader. And AD? Well you can't really be a leader when you have so may defensive shortfalls.

Who do we have that the team would follow to storm a machine gun nest? Who do we have that will set the example on the field, will stand up to the coaching staff if required, can be guaranteed to do the hard right instead of the easy wrong, who has the courage to do what is morally right to lead the club and our aspiring juniors?

Hastings appears to have many of the qualities - but is he in the long term plans of the club?
Neither Isiah or Api are leaders at their current clubs. Could Api be developed given his longer term contract?
Do we throw the chalice to one of the younger crew and invest in his development?

Who do we pin the development of the new dynasty of Wests Tigers upon?

Just Captain and Vice - Captain, no leadership group let the coaching and development staff earn their money. Hastings (C) and Doueihi (V/C) but Api or Joffa probably deserve it more, I'm just thinking about forwards / backs balance.

Hastings and Joffa are the two that I have in mind but I am not sure that either is a long term plan for the club. Hastings sure has the on field temperament and if he can do it will be one of the real NRL redemption stories.

I see a few nods to AD. Can we really have a leader with such poor defensive skills?

True, that is why there is a specialist Defensive coach - not that Cayless was able to get them up for it this year!

Hastings is definitely competitive. Not sure whether he likes to point fingers when things don’t work out well.

A captain needs to unite the team

Love the Avatar, first beers were Tooths Old, I put AD as V/C as a sort of balance thing, agree with your point about his defence but no one in the backline is really a leader, this may be the reason for the backline's poor performances the past couple of years and leadership potential should be a requirement for the next back they recruit.

No, I'm sure he has plenty to give; however, I expect his attacking skill set is of a higher calibre so he will probably cut his teeth as an attack coach.
I'm sure as part of his development he will have his head in both sides of it as a learning experience. It's not like he doesn't understand the defensive structures he played under some of the best. When he is a head coach he will be coordinating what is happening a the team level and directing the assistants to coordinate attack and defence to meet his requirements.

The club should be actively identifying leadership characteristics in every player, and praising that behaviour at every opportunity.
Every player in the team should be displaying some level of leadership at different times.
Calling players captain doesn’t make them leaders, but it can make the other half of the team’s non captains non leaders 😂 I honestly find it hard to believe that the club paid an expert to recommend having 5 captains.☹️

My take is we need professional footy players. Joe O to me is our best example. A consistent performer who makes minimal mistakes and plays smart footy.

Our spine are inconsistent and they make a lot of mistakes. Hastings excluded.

Kepaoa is another who has some good moments along with some really stupid plays.

Hastings makes plenty of Mistakes - Just hasn't played enough footy for punters to jam him for it...

You also got it the Wrong way around.... Kepaoa has really stupid plays with a 'few' good moments.
