Re-Branding of Leagues Clubs SMH

Of course its a subtle dig. Its also sarcastic and mocking those who claim that Sterlo calling us Balmain is the fault of Wests Tigers.

The people offended by my post will be the ones making that claim.

Well, maybe Wests Tigers should have a word to Sterlo to ensure he doesn't make the same mistake again.

It must be the off-season…

Anyway, time to move on guys - the natural progression over coming years and decades is that the WT's will continue to grow stronger and the Balmain/Wests heritage will continue to fade (it will never be forgotten but will naturally diminish).

There is nothing wrong with this, its just natural progress and evolution.

I don't see too many advantages of re-branding the clubs at the moment, its a football joint venture and so long as the football operations are working progressively and harmoniously then it doesn't matter too much.

For the record I'm a former Balmain fan and I'm a long-time football club member. My preference is for everyone to be pulling in the same direction, sadly this thread is an indication that there are still some old wounds and some people who haven't moved on yet.

If we can't be harmonious at a fan/member level then what hope has this football club got?

(quote from Knuckles) 10 years ago the ex-Balmain fans would have given it to you for saying that …. But I think both sets of ex-fans are moving toward a one club philosophy .... Even if it means giving up some of the things they cherished pre JV.

Hallelujah!

And thanks Helmesy. Can you repost that until people get the message?

That's not to say there aren't some entertaining tanties here, and watching the girls twist each others knickers is fun. I think picking at each others scabs to keep those 'old wounds' open is not really moving forward. I would rather see an intelligent discussion about what can be done to progress the situation.

Which means you're just as much of a dinosaur as those you try and mock.

I am actually with you and I would love to see campbelltown get the 100 poker machine licences from balmain rename the campbelltown club wests tigers and by a much bigger club we expand and grow the wests tigers name in the campbelltown district. This would help with our chances of a stadium upgrade for campbelltown also.I would much prefer for homebush to remain our home base for training etc.As players prefer to live in the city and beaches compared to penrith and campbelltown e.t.c It could affect our recruitment chances.

Yeah,Homebush is central for most players, also there is a strong "West Harbour" type mentality prevalent in both sides of the JV that i think the RLC will try to diminish as they try to establish a greater Western Sydney based Team.

Agreed but for training its homebush and for nsw cup Id play it at leichhardt and maybe some at pratten park.I would do a 6/6 first grade game split with campbelltown and homebush. Also to entice a stadium upgrade we could entice the Western Sydney wanderers to play 5 or 6 home games there a year. This would also help our bigger more attractive campbelltown leagues club.

Wanderers will never play more than once a season at Campbelltown, and that will probably be a pre-season or regional round game.

And whats basil tiger talking about ,west harbour? greater western Sydney? Last I knew these were semi pro clubs from other sports? both are which are irrelevant to the NRL

An even handed discussion is great, its what I enjoy most. But what do you do when faced with such an idiotic claim? Sometimes the only way to get through to people is to use humour or sarcasm in an attempt to shed light on such a ridiculous situation. But I agree, its an exercise in futility as in 2014 Rabbs etc will stuff up and we will get to hear about it all again.

But I'll be sure not to have a subtle dig at them when they do it, just for you!

What a huge step backwards that would be.

NSW cup will be officially separate to NRL game days until NYC is changed from under 20yo and to a national reserve grade comp (over 20yo). Some grounds don't allow 3 matches on one day (tear up pitch). 2014 will be same as 2013.

Ideal mix would be:
1st Grade: NRL
2nd Grade: National Over 20yo reserve grade
(All game days nationally) and having on dame day where permitted:
3rd Grade: New NSW cup with norths, wenty, Newtown, windsor, magpies etc (combo of current NSW cup and current Ron Massey Cup)

Also:
Jersey Flegg (u/19)
SG Ball (u/17)
H Matts (u/15)

If you build it they will come.

We're getting slightly off topic (okay a fair bit) but national reserve grade comp provides a good opportunity to revamp things from there below. I know they ran the SYdney Shield this year which seemed another step forward. There really needs to be a Sydney regional structure (ala Subbies rugby) at least at the very top. NSW Cup/Ron Massey would be a good move with the strong Sydney teams (and district teams like Wests Magpies or Central Coast). Having leviathans like St Marys or Wenty smashing A grade opponents is counter-productive for everyone. Then the real A Grade teams can play something more competetive.

Wests Tigers supporters are unlikely to travel to patronise the club at this point and changing the name would not change that because games are not played in the area anymore.

Actually I am one of those that would immediately join a Wests Tigers Leagues Club, regardless of where it was located.

The fact that 'my' team doesn't have a proper leagues club, and instead has 4 clubs around Sydney that don't represent the NRL side, is a sore point for me.

And once your a member of a club, you're likely to visit the joint more often. Not specifically after games, but just for general socialising/meals/drinking, because you know your hard earned it going to be put back into the club at some point.

Why don't we start to respect the fact that each parent club has a proud heritage, because they do, and find a way to acknowledge that in our advertising & logos. E.G. Wests Tigers incorporating the proud heritage of the Western Magpies and Balmain Tigers.

I think there are NRL rules in place whereby you cannot include in the NRL logo, more than one club's logo. So you cannot have a tiger and a magpie on the one NRL logo for example. This was discussed way back in 1999/2000 if I recall correctly.

Some good points abraham.

..for any Wests history buffs, there is a 1949 Burwood pocket patch on Ebay.
