Recruitment and retention

Kidwell is gone.
Elijah Taylor will be re-signed by the club.
Siro or Lovett will be moved on.
Josh Aloiai retained.
Ballin and Liddle will do at hooker.

We need a decent centre and move Kev to the wing.
No more injuries for Teddy!

Trying to be realistic…no point thinking about blokes like Mansour.

But Nathan Ross from the Knights (dunno bout his contract status) looks imo not bad, big strong fast and would be cheap. Has plenty of aggro

Thoughts?

Signed with Knights till end 2018…Uate is the one the Knights want to punt,,,

Next,,,

When does Jake Mamo's deal with the Knights end? Only 22 and a real handful anywhere he plays. Very fast and strong. Might solve our centre problems (or one of them) and can fill in at fullback too where he's been one of the Knights few good players

Goal kicker should be at the top of the list. We would have beaten the Titans and made eighth if we'd had any sort of a goal kicker.
Does it strike anyone else as odd that we have a coach who was one of the greatest goal kickers of all time, yet he doesn't seem to have been able to develop a goal kicker from Moses or Rankin. If he can't coach goal kicking, how can you expect him to coach anything else?

Mamo has been told to look elsewhere, has a big heart , but not big player

Don't know much about him but the solo try he scored the other week was good.

I watched a baseball movie where they selected players based on stats and nearly won the championship?

Has that been done in the NRL?

So if were looking four a centre we want someone who has x% line breaks and less the y% missed tackles???

How about we get rid of Warren Mcdonnell & hire someone else lard lad has been there forever.

Heard Vaughn is heading to dragons and Luciano will also be kept by them. They have plenty of room in the cap.

Spot on with Luciano, I've heard that Storm may look at Vaughn.

Mose Moase hasn't played for Dragons yet, had the season ending injury in the preseason he'll be a weapon. His another Kasiano in my eyes.

Luciano has signed with the dogs.

It's called Moneyball, Brad Pitt plays in it. Great movie and all but that philosophy would never work in NRL, btw whoever hasn't seen it I suggest you do. My personal favourite movie!

Thats it, it is a great movie. Putting the theatrics aside it does suggest another way of looking at sports and teams. One thing it does suggest is a balance is needed and in our case we need toil and flash, we got flash but we need toil!!!

Statistics will tell you a lot more in baseball though because it's a very individual game when it comes to the key components of batting and pitching.

true, But what if we looked at key individual stats, like for a forward meters gained, tackles made, offloads etc.. i think it would still have application but maybe not as effective??

Also didn't they want certain players like guys who stole bases rather than home run hitters so when they hit a home run the bases were loaded and stuff like?

The 'Moneyball' movement is about finding market inefficiencies, i.e. finding undervalued players due to their strengths lying outside 'traditional' avenues.
It's not just about using stats - Baseball has been, and will continue to be one of the most meticulously measured sports in the world. Have a look at http://www.fangraphs.com/library/ to get an idea of how advanced their metrics are these days.
As per Nelson's post, it's much easier to measure performance in Baseball given the game is essentially a series of individual, isolated events, rather than the free-flowing nature of Rugby League.
I've no doubt that teams are using advanced stats to recruit and measure performance (no doubt we're behind the times….), but it's not really comparable.
