Recruitment club vs Development club

As an outsider looking in, it seems reasonably evident that the junior pathways are working in the way that good prospects are being identified.
It’s the step between this and first grade where the system fails.
Fast tracking kids well ahead of schedule, well ahead of having paid their dues…recipe for continued failure - as we are witnessing.
Yup - this.

I think we're forced to fast track and also never have the right environment in first grade to allow them to flourish - its always a losing team with weak senior players.
 
Jared Haywood and Logan Brookes are two players of interest. Both can play in the halves, Haywood hooker also and Brooks fullback.

With the NRL expansion, our investment in the two junior districts will be worthwhile as we refine our identification, retention and development. This is one huge advantage we have over some clubs which includes the rapidly growing Macarthur district.
 
Im certainly no expert on where this club is at on the development side of things, but from the outside looking in I find it deeply concerning that our Flegg and KOE sides are still rubbish. KOE in particular. I see people go on about "next man up" but do we have any players capable of being that?
Again, only from the outside looking in, it seems we have massive problems with our coaches in charge and their ability to get players ready for higher grades. I'm not sure what Paynes record as a coach was before he came here, but based on his results, he wouldn't get a gig at the local A-grade after his performances here.
Similar thoughts on Flegg. If we have so many good juniors, we should be top 4. Either the talent identification is not good enough, or the coaching isn't. Something has to change.
My thoughts exactly. The talent scouts and coaches should be the first recruits (that have some sort of track record). They are the most important people to identify and then coach. And of course we poach for positions needed. All clubs do it but we are not as good as them. We need better people is these position IMO. Not fathers pushing theirs sons etc. More club first attitude. Unbiased.
And if other clubs identify our talent, we have a good look at them and retain if possible.
 
Does anybody know what resources we have at a pathways level apart from our seasonal coach appointments & CUBS squads?

How often do the CUBS squads come together to train? What facilities do they use? Do they receive any individual or specialist coaching (i.e. wrestling, kicking etc)?

It would be great to get an insight from the club about this as part of its content.
 
I recall Sheens advising we were fortunate to get 5 players into the NRL from one NYC team when usually one or two is the norm. One year we won the NYC, with Todd Payten as coach, Korobeite may have been the only player to progress to the NRL?

The point is you can still have the one or two players progressing via their individual talent although the team may not perform. I read a discussion with Knights' supporters complaining that they did well in HM and SG Ball but very few players progressed from those teams.

It's a recurring theme unfortunately paws right across the NRL, out of the thousands of juniors only a handful go on to be regular 1st graders.

It highlights how important it will be for WTs to have its identification, retention and development in place. We have one of the largest junior districts in the NRL and I hope the South West development area extends to just north of Goulburn .
 
Anchored at the bottom of the table for the last 3 years, it's natural that we have looked for inspiration from clubs like Canterbury who have lifted themselves out of the mire. After Canterbury churned through a heap of players in the space of a few seasons, they've struck the right balance with a squad of star recruits, journeymen and juniors.

Some were hoping that recruits like Luai would have the same transformative impact on the Tigers than Crichton did at Canterbury. But Canterbury's recent success isn't just the result of good recruitment, they also have the best young coach in the NRL who served a long apprenticeship at a winning club, as well as the structures in place to achieve success across all grades. When asked how Canterbury would become competitive again a few years ago, Gould identified development rather than recruitment as the primary factor. If you follow the juniors and KOE, you'll know that we are perennial also-rans while Canterbury dominates. With such a wide catchment, naturally we have a few talented players, but they often plateau due to poor development or leave to join stronger clubs. The point I'm trying to make is that recruitment alone won't lift us out of this malaise. We need to focus on coaching, player development and general standards across all grades before we can hope to improve.
