Reece Hoffman

Gus had a big twitter spool about turning him into a back rower,
That's where his speed and body shape belong...
I just don't think he's tough or dynamic enough

I don't think the game is tough these days if your talking in terms of brutality.
Have a look at some of the old Wests and Balmain games pre 80's.
These days a player needs better cardio and skill set to be a back rower, hence AD would transition to backrow ok, imo

Its the Wests Tigers way. Anyone we sign is "a dud from elsewhere", and anyone we let go was the next big thing "likely to captain the country".

Its just the way some supporters react to make themselves feel better

I also think AD is headed for the Back Row, Have done since he got here...
He'd want to learn to tackle though.

Back to my / your point... I agree they need endurance and good feet and hands, But there
are some tough and dynamic back rowers in the game... Plenty of them - I don't see Hoffman
even getting close to running with any of them?

Moses
kicked on pretty well when they left us Swordy
we haven't got too many recruitment decisions right in the last 10 years
Doesn't say we won't in the future though

Hoffman we have got right

Players dont have to be cement, all football players these days have similar training sessions to each other for the physicality, difference between an edge player and a centre is obviously speed but forwards tend to be confronting in D. I was a OC for a long time and in my last 5 years I played second row, after a while you get used to it.
If AD and Hoffman are good enough which IMO AD is, then he'll adjust. But I'm talking a few years down the track mate, he has to win a GF in the backs yet :]

Reece Hoffman to depart Wests Tigers
Wests Tigers

Fri 28 Jan 2022, 10:00 AM

Wests Tigers have today confirmed that Reece Hoffman has been released from the final year of his playing contract.

Hoffman joined the club in 2020 and became Wests Tigers Player #234 that season when he made his NRL debut against the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Hoffman has been granted an immediate release from the final year of his contract to take up a deal with another NRL club.

Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe thanked Reece for his commitment to the club him all the best for the future.

“On behalf of all at Wests Tigers, I’d like to thank Reece for his efforts since joining the club in 2020,” Pascoe said.

“Reece is a great young man, and we wish him all the best in the next steps of his career.”

You make it sound as if we "let them go". It's a two way street: they need to want to be here too.

JAC, Woods, Koroibete, Taupau.. I can't think of anyone we didn't try to keep tbh.

I don't think recruitment or more specifically "talent identification" is an issue. We have recruited very well in Juniors and Reserve Grade.. they're usually somewhere near the top.

With Hoffman, no problems. If he goes on to play 100 NRL games at a top 8 club, then we got it wrong.

Yeah, they have kicked on. But I will say this. Tedesco was always going to be that good and we were never a big enough playground for him. He didnt want to be here. Moses was different, it was best for us that he left and his manager was a big piece of that. Would he have made us better? Arguable. Has he made Parramatta better? I have a running joke wit a mate that they will never win a premiership with him at half, and Im sticking to it. I think the guy is terribly overated and gets by on his managers 'favour repayment plan'.

Anyway, back on topic moreso, I think we have lost a few fringe players that were never going to make us better, but some saw that as poor decision making. We have been a rabble for a period in that talent ID, but over the last year or two I think that has disappeared somewhat.

Probably been mentioned but I haven’t read previous posts

If his roster spot was blocking the path of someone like an Ogden or Dillon it’s the right call. Thought Hoffman was a bit of a plodder and never shown anything other than being depth at best, even in a side like ours

Good luck with that one Gus

We've basically swapped Hoffman for To'a. One was a squad member of a strong Qld u18 side, the other was a star for all grades and aussie schoolboy. Star has always been touted as a future superstar. Hoffman, even though he was in the qu18 side none of the qld clubs were interested in him, most of the schoolboys are signed to clubs whilst still at school - he left school uncontracted.

He's just never shown much. A big frame helped in his junior days but now he just doesn't have a position. Too slow and one dimensional for centre, doesn't have the work rate or power to play back row.

I wouldn't expect any immediate signings as a replacement for him.

That's the problem with all these junior players they all come with the POTENTIAL tag some achieve others don't WT'S have identified him as lacking something to make it, as one door closes another one opens for another up and coming player with POTENTIAL.

Good. It was bizarre that we filled up our top 30 this quickly. Better to leave a spot open for a possible mid year transfer or even just promoting a youngster who has shown they're worth it.

That was always my thought. The best Qld schoolboys are locked up early by Broncos, Titans or Cowboys. Broncos basically choose who they keep and release, and sometimes Broncos get that wrong, but not often that you can get in under the Broncos' nose for a legitimate QLD-raised junior.

Simpkin?
Broncos - Titans - Cowboys or Redcliffe don't have a Hooker...

You could probably add Storm to that list aswell. Slater, Cronk, Smith, Munster etc all through QLD systems who were locked up as schoolboys

mate of mine at work is an assistant coach and ex NRL player at Wynnum Seagulls, he was very suprised that the Tigers picked up Hoffman, said he saw nothing in him in juniors at Wynnum, however he had big wraps on Jake Simpkin though

Probably came as a package deal since they were best mates to be honest

Now that we’ve got Simpkin invested into the club, Hoffman can do his own thing.
