Religion and Race - a new cornerstone for us?

I'd rather the boys were at prayer group than getting busted at the casino with a load of Es or gatecrashing someones party and humping the dog. I don't think Will Hopoate is taking midweek rooftop selfies with Vodka Cruisers.

Is the alternative to religion "getting busted at the casino with a load of Es or gatecrashing someone's party and humping the dog"? I must say that I've never found that to be the case. Poor behaviour is usually due a lack of one's personal code of behaviour, rather than a lack of religion which, itself, is causing more than enough problems in its own right. Will Hopoate may not be taking midweek selfies with vodka cruisers but he and his ilk cause plenty of privacy issues knocking on unsuspecting peoples doors and trying to push their message down others throats. Myself, I'd rather he did the rooftop selfies with the vodka cruisers.

this was also a big issue in english rugby a few years ago, untill they started deducting payments from there contracts, now u dont hear about it. funny how for the last years before hopate played for the eagles and last year it was all good, now he wants to make a statement. i would be dirty if i was his team mate either play or go to sat rugby

Some of my sons RL teams (around 16s etc) were doing it before games….the islander boys leading the way, the ironical thing imo was that the district RU comp was played on saturdays and by many many islanders who went to church on Sundays
In a team environment....it was a little awkward as those that werent really into it went along with it for the sake of team spirit, commitment etc
Looking back now and being involved in those teams, I might have suggested they do it after the game.
if some didnt feel like partaking in it ...the game was over, done and dusted, also several times refs and oppositions would be waiting for us to finish praying....didnt make an ounce of difference footy wise, though possibly helped a few that were right into it...it really wasnt an issue tbh

No it isn't one or the other, and it concerns me that kids following the game aren't seeing any sane middle ground. There's alcohol or gambling advertising in almost every camera angle at an NRL game, but if that's not your scene you can join the happy clappers.

My views on religion are a rant for another day. Whilst I tend to agree with George Carlin on that subject, personal responsibility seems to be a limited commodity in professional football, so I'm not so dismissive of anything that keeps these boys out of trouble. I might regard organised religion as a dangerous mass delusion, but it's followers just might make more reliable footy players.

I'd rather have church going, god fearing cleanskins, as opposed to pill popping, girlfriend glassing, canine genital licking, wife beating, gang raping louts.

But hey, that's just me.

LOL. That's a good way to explain your stance quickly.

I don't see much difference in them praying and me doing an anti-nuclear demo at that grand final - we both deserve being booted out and beer cans.

i'm all for anything positive, however i saw our boys sharing a prayer with the other team recently.
not into that, prefer some heavy rivalry.

I want the rivalry too. But it seems some can just turn it on and off which is a bit different. Belt someone as hard as they can in a tackle then bend down and carefully help them on their feet before running back to their team.

So after the game that switch is turned right off.

I am concerned about mixing religion with sport. Although I'm an atheist, I support the right of any person to follow a religion of their choice but public figures such as sorts men and women should understand that public displays of religiosity, in places like a football stadium can be offensive to others. It seems to be tolerated by spectators and TV viewers at the moment but just wait until a muslim player prostrates himself on the ground after a try; in my opinion the tolerance will come to an abrupt halt. Far better to nip this in the bud and request that players thank their deity away from the public gaze and I hope that the NRL acts before we start to see ugly incidents occurring.

Nothing worse than people who are "offended" by every little thing. I If players praying offends people then i'd suggest they go to bunnings and grab a bag of concrete.

I'm not at all religious, but if other people choose to be that is their choice and they shouldn't have to hide it. After all we live in a free country don't we?

I thought Hopoate started the season playing on Sundays but changed his mind.

Both Manly and Parra insisted that he played on Sundays while Raelene over at the Dogs allowed him to go do his Mission on a Sunday rather than what he's paid to do.
There's heaps of highly religeous types in sport who don't shirk on their work, there's only been a handful of objectors over the years starting with Eric Liddell.

It is just Americanized crap that is seeping its way into our sports here in Oz. They have been doing that circle jerk love-in after games in the NFL for years.
Won't be long before the interchange bench will be replaced by a church pew and they can all sit on it singing Koombayah whilst swooshing down red wine and Sakata's post-match.
Not a fan of it but whatever floats their boat I guess, in this PC day and age it will be here to stay. Before you know it refs will be wearing robes and Jesus thongs. Would make a change for Cecchin who prefers thongs of the lace variety .

Quite possibly the funniest post I've ever read. :roll

No he's just refusing to train or play for his club on Sundays.

I hate this lovey dove garbage thats been brought into the game with their prayer group crap. All hugging and reciting chants to an invisible fairy or whatever it is…it's bad enough one of our prop forwards wears a hairband but this looks damned ridiculous.

some real funny comments here, muslim player praying offends others?

i dont think people understand that the sunday thing was already in hoppa's contract. he negotiated the contract, possibly took less money so that he doesnt play sundays. religion is not just about god, it's about family, community and in a way ethics. im proud that people still pick these things over money.

not sure who said it, but you dont want our players praying with other team's players coz it diminishes the rivalry? well why let them shake hands either then?

I'm the biggest atheist you'll ever meet, but I don't see the harm in it so long as they're not trying to convert the kids in row A. Nothing wrong with personal expression of faith.

I do not want to see the crap that you see in the NFL, praising this deity, praising that deity. If you want to believe, go for it, no need to advertise it as overtly as players in the NFL.

The deity never gets blamed after a loss does it.

Unless it's His Noodliness The Flying Spaghetti Monster.
