having craig bellamy as coach and a desire to avoid the sydney spotlight could sway reni maitua to revive his career in melbourne.
>
Maitua, 28, will talk to storm officials today about terms for next year.
>
**he met wests tigers yesterday and parramatta on monday. His manager, sam ayoub, said the utility wants to secure his future as soon as possible.\
\
"we're going to limit it to those (three) clubs because, while he wants to make a decision fairly quickly, he wants it to be the right decision," ayoub said.\
\
That rules out maitua's former clubs cronulla and canterbury.**
>
he was sacked by the bulldogs in december 2008 for a string of behavourial issues.
>
Maitua then signed for the sharks when, in may last year, he was caught with the banned steroid clenbuterol in his system.
>
The sharks this week signed new zealand international jeremy smith from st george illawarra and centre colin best from souths.
>
His two-year drug ban, means that maitua will not be able to play for the first seven weeks of next season. He spent the summer working as a lifeguard at maroubra beach in sydney.
>
But maitua has played test football and won a premiership with the bulldogs in 2004.
>
Maitua's versatility in being able to play centre, five-eighth and backrow would make him a valuable addition to melbourne, wests tigers or the eels.
>
Parramatta will lose feleti mateo to the warriors next year and the tigers are a little light-on for a wide-running backrower-centre in the vein of maitua or mateo.
>
"there's been a lot of interest so we're being a bit selective of which clubs will be good for him," ayoub said.
>
Melbourne showed interest in maitua after the bulldogs cut him, but he did not want to leave sydney at the time.
>
The storm has lost an international backrower in ryan hoffman as part of the purge of talent to get the club under the $4.2 million salary cap.
**but melbourne might not be able to match what the eels and tigers can offer.**
>
maitua cannot even train with a nrl team or use their club facilities until mid-may when his ban expires, and that could reduce his price significantly, to under $100,000\. The lure of melbourne storm's environment – being out of the rugby league spotlight in sydney and working with the former assistant test coach and nsw origin coach bellamy -- is strong.
>
"the squad, the coach because it's a very important contract to him given where he's at right now," ayoub said.

the tigers are light on for wide running second rowers and centres pffft. Ellis fulton dwyer and lawrence to name a few.

Add Moors and possibly Tuiaki to that list too.

How can Melbourne sign anyone?

It's been reported a few times that Melbourne were going to try and sign some players from other clubs to rebuild their playing roster.

They've lost Brett Finch, Greg Inglis, Brett White, Ryan Hoffman, Jeff Lima, Ryan Tandy, Aiden Tolman and Sam Joe.

I guess the combined salaries of those eight players is greater than the amount they were found to be over the cap for next year and that, plus the increase in the cap for next season, will allow them to re-enter the player market.

Sounds like Reni is more then likely going to go to Melbourne, Melbourne also signed Adam Woolnough (from retirement)

I would rather go after Horo

He's not bad aye..

Newcastle have tabled a good 3 year offer to him and are favorites to sign him. Cowboys and Bulldogs have also offered him 2 year deals. Tigers have not been mentioned.

Dwyer and the other youngsters are as good as Horo and 3 years younger.

I still wouldn't mind Reni

I would happily take Reni as he will come cheap and is a quality player and I think in the right atmosphere he could flourish especially after what he has been through , the great thing is we dont need him we are taking a punt and if it works out great if it doesen't we are already strong in those positions

Troubled Eels set to lose Maitua to Tigers
THE disharmony behind the scenes at Parramatta looks set to cost them more than a finals berth this year, with former international Reni Maitua expected to turn down a one-year offer from the club to link with the Wests Tigers.

And it's his former Bulldogs coach, Steve Folkes, who is responsible for trying to lure the backrower he sacked to Concord Oval.

Craig Bellamy is desperate to tempt the 28-year-old Maitua to Melbourne, confident the former Shark can return to NRL stardom under his tutelage. What counts against the Storm would be their inability to retain him past next year.

Maitua was excited at the prospect of linking with the Eels, but with the club in disarray he is open to a move to the Tigers, where Kangaroos coach Tim Sheens has all but assured him of a starting spot should the two parties come to a deal.

Despite having a large role in cutting Maitua from the Bulldogs when he failed to show at training sessions, Folkes is believed to be a big fan of the ball-playing back-rower and has been in Sheens's ear.

looks like his coming our way…i for one think he would be a great signing but i agree with having to much depth in that position

imagine:
11.ellis
12.matuia
13.heighnton

14.fifita
15.dwyer
16.payten
17.fulton

If he still has speed, Rene and Fults could switch between right centre and backrow similar to what Teo & Gillett are doing at Brisbane…

I just think we have too much depth in our backrow...

yeah it's interesting, thats for sure

8\. Galloway
9\. Farah
10\. Gibbs
11\. Ellis
12\. Matua
13\. Heighington

14\. Ayshford (assuming moltz is put in the centres)
15\. Fulton
16\. Fafita
17\. Payten

so where do players like Dwyer, Woods, Shirnak, D Fafita and all the rest fit in? Isn't Tuiaki supposed to be moving into the forwards? Payten must be leaving…

tell you what… id be delighted to see that pack run out...
