Rest in Peace Tigergran

Just saw this news and wanted to pass on my respects. I met TigerGran quite a few years ago when she came to my fundraiser trivia night at Tigers Leagues Balmain. She was quite a passionate person and left an impression on me.

I'm loving seeing all the support on here for her and her family.

I never met Kay in person but there was a particular game where I had no transport as the wife was working and I posted a message on this forum about a lift to the game and Tigergran was the only person to respond, although living 45 minutes away I now regret not making the effort to attend the celerbration of her life.
Even though we never met in person Kay was an inspiration to not only me but many other members of the forum.

Got in the car to go to work today, bout 6 20am, radio still on 2SM from the previous arvos trip home listening to talkinsport.
I think it was Grant Goldman on…only caught the very end, heard him say her name and describe her as a very special person.

Another little snippet I came across this week - from The Weekly Times, the local newspaper of the Balmain/Ryde area. I remember Kay speaking about how much she enjoyed this.

**Distance no hassle for “Tiger Gran” Kay**

THEY don’t come more loyal than ardent Balmain and Wests Tigers’ rugby league supporter Kay McNamara (pictured below) of Orange.
Whether it be a pre-season trial, competition fixture, club function or Junior League event you’ll find 67 year old Kay in attendance - rain, hail or shine.
Affectionately known as “Tiger Gran”, the much-travelled mother of three makes the 262km trek from the country town of Orange to Sydney on a regular basis to watch the Tigers in action.
Her love affair with the game dates back to the 1940s - a golden era for the Balmain club that yielded first grade premierships in 1944, 1946 and 1947 and featured legends in Joe Jorgenson, Tommy Bourke, Jack Spencer, Sid Ryan, Arthur Patton, Stan Ponchard, George Watt, Jack Hampstead, Pat Devery, Fred De Belin, Harry Bath, Hilton Kidd, Dave Parkinson and Bobby Lulham.
Kay grew up in Lilyfield Road (formerly Augustus Street) in Leichhardt and attended Orange Grove Public School.
She has vivid childhood memories of walking to Leichhardt Oval on match day along with her sister Irene and mother Stella Johnson to watch her beloved Tigers do battle in the NSWRL Sydney premiership.
In 1965 she moved to Orange but has maintained her devotion to the black and golds by regularly making a day trip to Tigers’ matches over the metropolitan area.
Ever since 1976, Kay has attended matches or club events religiously with either her sons Neil and Stuart or daughter Jillian - a remarkable effort.
Kay lists Balmain’s 1969 Grand Final win and Wests Tigers’ 2005 NRL premiership victory as special moments and travelling to England to watch the Tigers’ contest the World Club Challenge in early 2006 as a highlight.
She may have clocked up thousands of kilometres over the years but figures it is “all worthwhile.”
“I’ve made many life-long friends from the game that has given me so much enjoyment,” revealed Kay.
She is widely respected in rugby league circles and the Tigers’ players appreciate her valued support at all levels.
“Kay is a very special lady and we just marvel at her passion and tenacity to get to matches and club events and show that Tiger spirit,” said Balmain-Ryde Eastwood coach Paul Fletcher.
“She’s a gem and hopefully we can deliver some silverware for the likes of Kay and co to savour later this year.”

Tiger Gran I'm estimating, would have been a fervant Tiger supporter for probably 60 years? That sort of support really deserves acknowledgement and I'm wondering if one of the forum's contributors, preferably one with a contact or two at Concord, might suggest the team consider wearing black armbands as a mark of respect? This is nothing less than Kay deserves IMO and would be a worthy tribute to a great person

Not sure if the club has arranged anything, but, myself and some other friends of Kay will be wearing our own black arm bands for round 1 at Leichhardt in memory of Kay. Anyone who cares to remember Kay in this way is more than welcome to join us in doing so.

I was born in Orange and lived there more recently for 5 years before moving to Brisbane.
I can't believe Tiger Gran was there and i didn't even know.

She was an inspiration the way she followed the tigers, second only to Laurie Nicholls.

I hope to be like them when i'm older and i hope the Tigers can do it for her in 2012.

Has anyone heard whether the club is acknowledging the late Tigergran tomorrow????

Is it just me or does anyone feel that Kay some how drifted that FG over for us today?

I'm not a religious person or anything but I reckon Kay wanted to see Leichhardt erupt in such a fashion

Hi everyone,

I am sad to say that Mum passed away at about 12.15am this morning. She was touched by the offerings of support on the forum which we read to her.

Thank you to everyone.

Regards

Stuart McNamara

I know I'm considerably late but thinking of you and your family.

I remember your mother offering me a ride to the game and back.

What was it, Lad?

She was to be given the West Tigers Woman of the Year at half time today.

My brothers were there to accept it and I haven't been able to talk to them yet for the details on how it went.
Bittersweet I guess but she would be brimming with pride right abotu now!
