Return to lidcombe - march 1

I actually like the idea of all trial matches being played in the bush our outer lying regional places

Only if Wests Tigers are playing country teams.

It is a revenue game now, you must use every clash against an NRL team as a means to raise revenue.

City v country is moving to sunday this year so it will be more country focussed. I would love to see a wt v manly game at lidcombe one day. Perhaps a trial next year to mark 35 years since the famous 1978 clashes of fibros v silvertails. Ground looks ok surface wise. Sat march 3 (not march 1) is scheduled match.

It would be great and we need to have the boys running onto the field with Survivor playing Eye of the Tiger live!

Are you serious or joking? Eye of the Tiger for Magpies v Manly? More like a hearty rendition of "We're the boys from Western Suburbs" led by Tommy Raudonikus and Trevor Cogger…

I was joking… But that would be good at balmain.....

But before the game
At
The railway Pub

The magpie club

Deep in the heart of lidcombe.

In the 70's didn't a few Wests players in a red faces type act sing a version of the Village People's 'you can't stop the music', re-worded to 'you can't stop the Magpies'? they could run out to that

I am really surprised the ground is still in existence. I know they play soccer on the ground and Auburn rugby league is playing there this season, but that land must be worth a bit…..

It has Auburn Pool to the south east, the main suburban railway line to the south west, the NSW Netball Association courts to the north west and an open storm water drain running along the north east border, so probably wouldn’t really be very valuable or suitable for residential zoning.

I've never seen Lidcombe Oval. What are the facilities like there these days and what sort of crowd would it hold?

Hasn’t really changed at all since the 80’s except it now sports the blue and gold colour scheme of one of the sides that plays there, the playing surface is still in good nick and the bike track still runs around the oval

The ground record is 21,015 set in 1978 but that’s really squeezing them in, the capacity is listed as 20,000

Facilities are poor. The tiny grandstand is dilapidated.

But the history is rich.

No dramas Bug. Hopefully the field itself is in decent nick for the players.

Seriously - who ever sat in the grandstand at Lidcombe Oval anyway ?
If they ever did play a game there I would turn up for a touch of nostalgia - what a great ground to watch all those matches in the 70's.
My 2nd favourite ground after Leichhardt Oval.

Just the mental image is enough to drive someone to drink… Dear God no! But yeah league players could be convinced to do stuff like that.

Anything official anywhere on this???
I can only find this:

INTO THE SUNSET
>
WHILE Wests' days are numbered, the Magpies are set to go out with a big bang. A plan is on the drawing board for the Magpies NSW Cup team to play arch rivals Manly at Lidcombe Oval. If it goes ahead, expect a bucket of blood, a cloud of dust and a cavalcade of Magpies greats including Tommy Raudonikis, Noel Kelly and their ilk to toast the sun setting over a grand old club.

I'm not sure if its Lidcombe Oval or Orana Park that I can remember as a kid on TV. It was regularly on the ABC Saturday game, but I remember a bike track and large crowds with huge Black & White Checkered Flags… It always look fun!

Bike track was Lidcombe Watto….I always forgot how steep it was hopping the fence just before the hooter going for the corner posts.....lots of kids knee and elbow bark stuck to that track

Awesome Ink… There was no better feeling as a kid to actually get a Corner Post. (Ironically, I never grew out of it until I was about 25.)

One of the last parks that let the crowd come over the fence in Brisso was Ballymore. 2-3 Sausages on a Roll, A gut full of XXXX provided by the Keg Girls with beer in thier Backpacks, a few tunes by the 'unofficial' Reds Choir, and over the fence at Fulltime, tackle a Security Guard, get the Post and play a game Stacks-On...

Memories you cant buy!!!

Ha Ha remember 'you can't stop the magpies well' an entertainment classic made Maddona's effort at the Superbowl look second rate- well maybe not. Lidcombe oval brings back a few memories apart from the football, getting in and racing around to a good vantage point which involved climbing through a hole in a wire fence, one of my mates ripped a big hole in his strides, we get about 10metres further along and there was an open gate- hilarious at the time.

We have a system of reputation points don't we? Can I suggest we create dickhead points as well? In saying that I'd probably end up with a few of those

Ink, I'm positive the goal posts were moved to campbelltown originally. It was a media story at the time as they were quite tall as u would remember. The pratten park posts ended up at a a local high school in campbelltown although they wouldn't be the originals I suspect. Correct me if I'm wrong

I remember the portable stands - the bleachers - went to cambo…Im unsure about the posts but yeh they were massive...there was like four welded sections above the crossbar about 5 or 6 metres each in length a bit smaller in diameter as they rose...telescopic sort of.
