I think you will find Elias is only a small part of the consortium the main person is a prominent Sydney businessman. They probably didn't have the consortium then plus it sounds like they are a bit frustrated with Magpies in Cup etc hence they now want to come in.

No - if Wests Ashfield sold .5% they would still own 89.5% of the JV. WA would either sell the whole lot lock stock and barrel or nothing at all - why would they sell down to a point where they lose control of the club but have to stump all the money for feeder clubs, juniors etc. The clowns on SEN need to back to school and do Commerce 101.

No - if Wests Ashfield sold .5% they would still own 89.5% of the JV. That's not Benny, that one is solely on the NSW Labor Govt. They negotiated to get the Tigers out for the Rozelle Metro, pulled the plug on the Metro (BTW they spent $0.5B on the Metro before canning it), then declined all of the development proposals that were made for the premises. It's understandable that Balmain (and subsequent owners) would try to maximise usage of the site, I'm not going to criticise anyone for that, and Benny's consortium only came in when the club was already breathing its last breath; it only prolonged the inevitable.

edit: folks banging on above how Benny may have swindled Balmain, because he was trying to make money off the development deal (I don't see why anyone would be shocked by that), but overlook the fact that Balmain were already $23M+ in debt when Benny tried to arrange his deal. You don't sell something for $1 unless you are desperate.

Balmain withered on the vine, you could not have killed the Leagues Club off more elegantly if you had tried.

Whatever happened to the redevelopment plans for the Balmain Leagues club?

I believe the current plans are approved subject to use of the premises as a dive site for the Rozelle-Nth Beaches tunnel (they are calling it the "Western Habour Tunnel". I understand the NSW Govt have been angling to use the site for extraction for some time.

I have but I’ve also seen the disaster on parramatta road, and I think it’s worse.


Do you mean Concord? If so you have to be kidding. It will be a place for elite athletes and occupied by the Wests Tigers. The buildings are progressing well and within a short period of time of it being announced. The exact opposite to what Elias has had a hand in on Victoria Road.

I don't. I whinge a lot about our current board and structure but it is infinitely better than anything associated with Elias. Be careful what you wish for, it could be much, much worse.

Well there you have it, though. Fans want change somewhere - obviously changing the roster and coach hasn't worked. You could punt Pascoe, he's had 5 years, but I don't think removing the CEO is going to to it, because he's more the finances and admin man.

That leaves the board, who cannot be voted out. The only alternative is to buy them out.

Remember: as with Newcastle, there is every chance that even if a partially private consortium does not convert the wins, or at worst, run out of money, usually the Leagues Club just buys the club back at a discount price.

One thing I don't ever want anyone to forget, despite whatever anyone thinks about Ben Elias or any other potential owner, is that Wests Ashfield are a successful and debt-free club because they are a massive pokies den. The club is literally funded by a majority share of gambling money. That is the age-old NSWRL system of running football clubs, by the gambling revenues generated by their associated Leagues Clubs. That's why the Leagues Clubs were up in arms when the pokie tax came in some 20 years ago, because they then had to diversify their revenue streams to account for the lost gambling revenues to tax.

One day, it's probably a preferable thing if Tigers are self-sustained and not reliant on a Leagues Club board.
