Michael Chammas on SEN radio was of the opinion the consortium was after the Balmain side of the joint venture plus 0.5 to have control.

Michael Chammas is obviously dumber than Dean Ritchie. So benny will pay 10mil for 10% which values the club at 100mil. And with this 10% all he gets is a seat at the table - he doesn't control anything. Even benny isn't that stupid.

no they will pay 10 million for 50.5 %

Balmain doesn't have 50% to sell

No point cochise - i gave up trying to explain that point. I also gave up trying to explain that WA would not sell down to a point where they no longer hold control. Some people just ignore common sense.

you have nothing to worry about then diedpretty wests ashfield won't sell then

I don't think they will but if they did they would want to sell the whole lot not just 50.5%. Personally i don't care either way - the history of the board stuff ups doesn't paint a pretty picture. I believe it is far more stable now however it is pretty autocratic. WA doesn't answer to anyone including the WT board. As for Wests magpies being the feeder club i think those days are numbered.

Fun times ahead, if wests ashfield want cash good time to sell.

The Balmain side of the business.?
Don't Wests own 90% at the moment?
Either way it's clear that if Benny gets his hands on it it'll revert to being the Balmain Tigers no matter what the official name is.
That'll see me off. Don't think I'll be alone.

The club will never be Balmain Tigers or Western Suburbs Magpies so you need not worry

Agree with that it will never be Balmain or Western suburbs Magpies we will always be wests tigers or we will not exist.

In name you are correct.
However if Benny buys it it will no longer be a joint venture between Wests and Balmain.

It'd be the Benny and his mates Balmain footy club.

The emblem would be an a' hole and the mascot would be a dancing colon.

ok up the Maggie's

Nah. I'm the original Wests Tiger.
Spent my childhood alternating Sundays between Leichhardt Oval and Lidcombe oval.

My point is you can't sell 50% of something you don't own.
I can't sell 50% of your house if I'm only renting your garage.

Mmm....So Benny made Balmain bankrupt (sold it for $1) and now wants to buy it back, so he’s got a stake in WestsTigers.
Is this what Backdoor is angling at?

Pretty sure Benny bought the club site, the physical premises, he never actually had rights over the Balmain Leagues Club, which only exists now as a merged entity with Wests Ashfield.

Have you seen the disaster that is on Victoria Road and has been for years? You wouldn't want Elias having control of anything to do with Wests Tigers.

That's not Benny, that one is solely on the NSW Labor Govt. They negotiated to get the Tigers out for the Rozelle Metro, pulled the plug on the Metro (BTW they spent $0.5B on the Metro before canning it), then declined all of the development proposals that were made for the premises. It's understandable that Balmain (and subsequent owners) would try to maximise usage of the site, I'm not going to criticise anyone for that, and Benny's consortium only came in when the club was already breathing its last breath; it only prolonged the inevitable.

Balmain withered on the vine, you could not have killed the Leagues Club off more elegantly if you had tried.

So it’s location was its ultimate demise?

Disagree. The problem was the plans put forward on a number of occasions were not appropriate for the area and were never going to be approved, and rightfully so. Benny tried to capitalise on those failures and basically fleeced Balmain in the process.

Partially true.

I knew someone who worked on developments for Leichhardt Council and I also know someone who was working on the Rozelle Light Rail.

It's an absolute fact that Balmain left the Leagues Club premises under assurances from the NSW Labor Govt that they would get approval for a development on the site once the rail link was done, with a Rozelle station at or near the club ("under the club" if I recall). The Labor Govt eventually abandoned the light rail plans, then they were voted out for the Libs.

The Leagues Club then attempted a series of applications to demolish the vacant club and build a combo residential/club building, because they were already leaking money by having a vacant lot. The Govt was no longer involved with the applications, so they all ended up back at Leichhardt Council, who are notorious bastards for approving developments (I'm not saying whether that's right or wrong, just saying they were bastards to get things through).

Rozelle reknowned also for it's NIMBYism. Of course Tigers would try to maximise their gains from a new premises. It's exactly what Cronulla have done recently with their development approval. You make a heap of capital selling units on top of a retail/commercial facility.

Whether or not the applications were pushing the boundary of what's acceptable from a Town Planning capacity, I cannot say - I haven't the expertise. It would be false for most lay folks to claim they have expertise about what's best for town planning, or what is appropriate for development applications of this scale.

What I can say is
(1) the "Rozelle Village" in that area (Darling St and Vic Rd) is run-down in 2021, and I'm talking the other non-club businesses. The last 20 years have not been good for that part of Darling St, and all the capital and the spending has gone down to the Balmain end. It does need a re-vamp.

(2) Victoria Rd is a big busy street, and anyone who is claiming "village" heritage hasn't been paying attention to the use of that artery the past 40 years. There's a very compelling reason why business picks up dramatically once you get away from Vic Rd and down into the Balmain peninsula.

(3) NSW Liberals putting a lot of roadways under Rozelle now, with tunnel entrances about the area, which should surely have some impact now on traffic flow and volume, which was one of the primary complaints of having a significant number of potential residents at a new Balmain Leagues Club

(4) Leichhardt Council happily blocking tall development proposals with comments about aeroplane heights and whatnot, but Balmain Shores and the other post-power station mega developments went through OK in the late 80s - early 90s? Who exactly was paid off or did a deal to allow that to happen, if volume of people is the issue?

(5) at one stage applications for the Leagues Cub were able to bypass LC and go straight to NSW State planning commission, or whatever it is called. I don't know the ins-and-outs of those applications, because as I said the person I knew worked for LC and didn't know the exact details of how the Govt department were assessing. I recall, about this time, is when Balmain were getting into serious financial trouble, having to wait out these council and then State Govt delays with minimal revenues.

(6) Rozelle and Balmain are very close to the city. I think it's unrealistic to expect or hope that in a city of 5M people, that suburbs within 10 mins drive of the CBD aren't going to have to shoulder some of the burden of population density. Unrealistic. Look at Pyrmont, heavily populated now, but they've done a reasonably good job of it, and I drive around there every week, the traffic is fine, there are also thriving local businesses, pubs, cafes etc. Light rail connection, they are even now getting a metro station.

No they don't, they don't by definition have expertise or know what's appropriate. All they have is self-interest and personal preference. Accredited and experienced developers and planners have the expertise. Residents are only interested in what benefits or suits them personally. And I think that's natural, I won't criticise residents for having and wanting a voice. But you don't put together committees of residents to approve development applications, because if you did hardly anything would ever get built anywhere.

Look at Haberfield for example - do you think half those residents wanted the WestConnex to tear through, acquire properties, chop Ramsay Rd in half an introduce two huge tunnels next to Henley Marine Drive? Surely not, but Haberfield has had to shoulder some of the burden on behalf of Sydney as a whole.

Perhaps in some ways, yes. The Balmain Leagues Club was a small premises compared to others, they wanted to expand, and that makes sense. They wanted to diversify their revenue streams because pokie tax was biting especially on smaller non-renovated revenues.

And even moreso for Rozelle, because Star City had opened and was basically dominating local gambling revenues.

This is in contrast to Penrith Leagues, or Wests Campbo, Dooleys at Lidcombe, Revesby Workers etc. which had no particular issues for space, could acquire land and develop, renovate, spruce up their pokie floors (which they literally have now, entire floors or swathes dedicated to pokies). Penrith Leagues can simply develop out, they didn't have to develop up.

It's difficult for clubs to expand that close to the city, I struggle to think of a single one that has managed it, to expand and renovate and draw big crowds. The ones in town are capped in size and space, and the truly big clubs of Sydney are out in the suburbs (and that's not just space, that's parking as well).

I have but I’ve also seen the disaster on parramatta road, and I think it’s worse.

Do you mean Concord? If so you have to be kidding. It will be a place for elite athletes and occupied by the Wests Tigers. The buildings are progressing well and within a short period of time of it being announced. The exact opposite to what Elias has had a hand in on Victoria Road.

I was referring to administration rather than the physical structure.

Still better than anything Elias touches.

Not sure I agree with that. I think it would be impossible to do worse than what our current ownership/board have done.

I don't. I whinge a lot about our current board and structure but it is infinitely better than anything associated with Elias. Be careful what you wish for, it could be much, much worse.

It couldn’t be worse. It’s impossible.

Don't underestimate the ego, stupidity and business incompetence of Benny Elias. Of course it could be worse.

No finals since 2011 and 1-6 to start the season. How could it get much worse?

With Benny involved we’d be on the path to extinction.

That'll see me off. Don't think I'll be alone.

that's what they said the balmain side of the merger plus 0.5 %
Wests ashfield would still have 49.5 %
First thing they do is make Canterbury Cup wests tigers I'm sure
it may not happen it would depend if wests ashfield want cash I guess

But Balmain don't own 50%
They own 10%
They only own that 10% through the generosity of Wests paying off all their debt.
Just wondering why Benny didn't want to buy half when the Balmain side of the JV was drowning in debt.

I think you will find Elias is only a small part of the consortium the main person is a prominent Sydney businessman. They probably didn't have the consortium then plus it sounds like they are a bit frustrated with Magpies in Cup etc hence they now want to come in.
I thought wests ashfield always gave balmain the option to buy back the debt from them.
Irrelevant what we think I dont know if wests ashfield wants to continue to run a football club so they might take the cash

lol..the only person who seems a bit frustrated with our feeder team in NSW Cup is you..

I think the consortium might be too Geo hence they are trying to buy some of it back.
if that is the case call them balmain tigers next year in Canterbury Cup if the consortium buys it from ashfield

You can call them Rainbow Unicorns if you want as long as the are feeding talent to the NRL side..

Interesting Michelle Bishop from SEN radio and chanel 7 just said she had been working on the story since Monday and Dean Ritchie beat her to the story, she did say on air it is a very prominent businessman in the consortium and they want to buy balmain side of merger and talked about making one home (did not say where).

Wow :astonished: cool down a bit @Dwight-Schrute.
It's great to see a bit of pro Wests Magpies on here  , but you're getting a bit carried away bro
Love your passion for the Mighty Magpies though :+1:

Bugger off Benny.

If it gets rid of our board I’m all for it

Have you seen the disaster that is on Victoria Road and has been for years? You wouldn't want Elias having control of anything to do with Wests Tigers.

If Benny owns the club, what players would want to play for our club
It's hard enough to sign decent players now
Put Ben's name up in lights and no one comes
Shut the doors

I was listening to the first and last podcast , and they coached the sg ball team from Wests last year , and they reckon the crap infighting at the lower levels is still going on . Not to mention dinosaurs in powerful positions , still thinking it’s the magpies , and hating on Balmain . And I’d assume vice versa at BJLD.

We need to build an academy at Campbelltown . Have 2 Wests tigers teams run around in Matt’s and ball , comprised of merged players from both districts . An A team and a B team . And Bus the kids out there from Balmain . It’s no different than Manly bussing thier kids in from all over Sydney a few times a week. (It has to be 2 teams as , parents would remove thier kids from both districts if opportunities for rep honours are halved ) .

It would give us a true presence out west , get rid of the really bad management of Wests JRL , at least in a junior pathways sense , and a 1 club identity .
U20s Wests tigers , reserve grade Wests tigers , Ron Massey cup Wests tigers , Matt’s Wests tigers , Sg ball Wests tigers , Tarsha Gale Wests tigers etc)

It would also be much like MLB , that when you got the tap on the shoulder to go to the NRL training (which would probably be the reserve grade team as well ) it would be a pathway as well , and a pursuit that kids could see . Ie. the Bus to concord , or training at concord .

I always thought the Wests side of the merger were far too attached to the magpie , even though they got the name . It’s ridiculous really , as neither Balmain nor the magpies are EVER coming back .
There’s a guy who was on the rugby league digest , talking about Wests and how he could never support the tigers , because nobody chants “Wests” at games ? Like what the hell ? He’s my age . Mid 30s . In 2000 I was a teenager . I’ve been supporting Wests longer than I have Balmain . Anybody who thinks like this needs to be removed from the club . I’m not saying disregarding the history , but rather holding onto it like it’s a badge of honour .
Otherwise if we can’t do that , we should just move to Perth . Seriously . Wests Magpies are dead sorry. Nobody cares under 35. Balmain Tigers are dead . Nobody cares under 30. And they’re the ones who will take the club into the future . My son would follow us , if we were good . He’s 7 . He doesn’t want to go and watch his dads team lose all the time . He said his team is the panthers , cause his friend said they win all the time and are the best .

Sorry about the rant , but I’m so over this garbage .

I was pretty shocked listening to the West’s podcast regarding the vitriol to west’s tigers. I googled him and he is a mad Storm supporter apparently which was concerning because he has/had a senior role in the Western Suburbs junior rugby league club unless I’m mistaken
