What do you say? Safe to say the most shocking thing to ever happen in Australian sport. Absolutely surreal beyond words. The first i heard about it, he was being air lifted to hospital, and my fist reaction was concussion, even if it did sound a little full on, you assume he'll be alright. Never in a million yrs would i have ever thought something like this to be the end result, but then no one would have.
He was an absolute star coming up through the junior levels and carved every attack up at state level before he was awarded the baggy green. Seemed like a really decent, quiet kind of guy as well. I know people tend to embellish personality traits when talking about the recently departed, but in Phil's case the description fits him perfectly.
I'm really feeling for his family, in particular his mum and sister. I understand they were both at the game on Tuesday which is so sad when you think about it, not just for the obvious reason, as a New South Welshman playing interstate, obviously the chances of seeing his family weren't all that frequent, so it was probably a game his family had marked down on the calender to go and see him and probably spend a bit of time with him. Its really upsetting when you think about it.
Still doesn't feel real, and i doubt it will be anytime soon before it does. RIP Phil, i'm a firm believer that once you pass whatever pain you suffered before death disappears and you are happy and at peace. I have no doubt that applies to you atm.

I've always loved players that change it up a bit and play with their own style. For a young guy to hit the elite level and play it his way showed so much courage. It's much easier to conform as every kid coming through is pressured to. You always hit a coach or senior player who will tell you you're doing it all wrong and you need to change to play with the technique of everyone else. But Hughes did it his way.
If ever there was a cricketer in the modern era who had a right to be snarky to the media and feel agrieved at his treatment it was this kid. But he carried on and rode every set back and put down with humility and grace and just worked harder.
This is a reminder of the fragility of life and the human form. I remember in my first year of university an anatomy lecturer saying the human body is an intriguing but ultimately flawed design and that 'a first year engineering student down the hall could design something better'. The longer I live the truer that statement becomes.
Sadly there is not much you can do but wait for the sadness to pass and celebrate a life well lived.

Was really tough listening to commentator Jim Maxwell on the ABC yesterday afternoon as he delivered the news. And as he said, it's really tragic losing a young sportsperson in a freak incident like a car accident or what not, but for it to happen on the field doing what they love is just heartbreaking.
Has been very emotional seeing all the photos online of people who have paid tribute with the #PutOutYourBats. A lovely gesture.

So sad.
I followed his career because he was a pleasant batsman to watch. I truly believe that he should have been given more opportunity in test cricket than he was given. He had more talent than most of those that replaced him. So sad.
I have played the game at first grade level but never good enough for any rep cricket. I have opened both batting and bowling in my time. It is because of this experience that I feel so saddened right now. I never wore a helmet even though I played against some good quicks. It is the real "freak" accident indeed.
So sad for his parents.

I truly believe that fast bowlers only bowl bouncers to try and get batsmen out. Never to actually harm them.

Driving home today saw a lot of cricket bats out the front….I live in a quite street and as I type the kids are out the front playing cricket...haven't seen that for ages

Phil Hughes, while originally from the Nth coast NSW, played for Western Suburbs District Cricket Club and attended Homebush BHS…he is from OUR district
