Surely the departure of Money Bill will free up a hell of a lot of cap space. I can't see them losing anyone of great value.

Money Bill$ only on 50k …true !

Yes but even if he was on some ridiculously low figure, the salary cap still has to take into account the true value of the player. You can't just pay someone like Sonny Bill $50 grand and put that figure into your salary cap because the NRL will make you use his true value which would be more like 10x the $50 grand.

Seriously though , the NRL wouldn't ratify a deal with SBW on $50 k

Why wouldn't they ? It's all about ratings isn't it ?
Let's face it , it's not an even competition is it !

When Sam Burgess came to OZ he wanted a challenge and to experience the lifestyle.. ( sun /sand).
It was reported that on the books he was getting paid $150k . The sweetener was him and Mummy Burgess got to stay (for free) in one of Rustys harbour side Mansions for the duration of his contract with souths …
Conclusion ... Money buys success !

Hobbo remember how they kept telling Parra when they were trying to sign Folau ,that they wouldn't ratify a deal

The NRL must stick a minimum amount on what a player is worth salary cap wise

I do remember the Folau /parra discussions .
All I'm saying is that these massive third party agreements which only the glamour clubs can attract are making the comp lob sided IMO

Totally agree with you , but we need to learn from what the Roosters /Dogs/Rabbits do and match them

No reason they couldn't live "rent free" in some Meriton mansions in prime Sydney locations …......

Imagine if we had a similar system to what the NBL has/had (not sure, don't follow often) with player ratings?
Players assigned a value between 1 and 10 or something and each team has a points quota, think it was 100 or thereabouts for the NBL, and the ratings were updated every offseason.

It'd even be interesting to assign NRL squads ratings now and see just how well each team is using their cap.

Well they have the NSW winger, Tupou on 40k (officially) so that probably helps their cap. They also got jennings on a discount from the panths. SBW is supposedly on 300-400k but is being topped up by Ch 9 for several more hundred thousand.

It doesn't matter what the club officially says it is paying you. What matters to the player is how much actually finishes up in his pocket (or his special bank account). Think under the table payments, "special" deals and tax rorts.

The NRL has a minimum player salary of 80k for players within the top 25 of each team.

So it's totally impossible for the roosters to claim Tupou at 40k but don't let that get in the way of a good lie.

I have heard that SBW is a good golfer. Plays with Nick, who is not a good golfer, often for $50K a game.Easy money? How do you police that?

So they might lose a couple of fringe first graders and gain Kieran Foran :unamused: hmmmm, my heart bleeds for them.

Of all the top teams, Manly are most likely the only ones that will struggle to keep their team together - Watmough, King and Glenn Stewart are already gone and Foran, Brett Stewart and possibly others will probably follow suit. Won't make any difference to our mob though - the top teams usually end up just swapping their best players around amongst each other, while clubs like ours are left to try and pick up the scraps! Real fair comp this :unamused:

Sonny has the shonkiest deal in NRL history…. he has the best part of $700k TPA , from none other than Channel 9\. Not only is it shady because it is a carbon copy of Parramatta's attempt to bring in Folau that couldnt get the rubber stamp, but the sponsor in this instance fails the majority of criteria to be a third party.

Think about it, to be a third party sponsor you are allowed to use the player as a marketting tool, as long as you divorce the player from the club licence...

Mini, is also playing the last 2 seasons on supposedly minimum wage... So thats 2 top tier players they have to replace for the actual cap space of $350-400k.

For many years they had Schubert, the salary cap auditor keeping their books, a conflict of interest in itself, though that situation has since changed.

It's a coincidence that Schubert was a former roosters player.

And a Wests player also

That's why I love a game like tonight, I don't specifically hate Roosters more than some other teams, but Rabbits fans freaking loathe them, it is perfectly set.

Only trouble is Rabbits are so gun-shy of these clinch moments and Roosters are their mortal nemesis, chief bringers of doom and despair.

and why would you think he was signed as a top 25 player given he came out of reserve grade?

you really think the chooks are stupid enough to tell the media they're paying a player below minimum wage in defence of their salary cap? thats like an employer telling the ATO the reason he paid less tax is cause he has 10 employees on $8 an hour….

the chooks have just effectively managed their salary cap, buying good player cheap and offloading all the crap like Anasta. Imagine our cap after you removed Lawrence, Anasta, Galloway, Moltzen, Lulia and all those players we were still paying last year at the sharks like Gibbs. they've probably ensured that the players have strong 3rd party deals too. i'd love for the wests tigers to be that astute, but unfortunately we havent been over the past 3-4 years.

Tupou didnt come up out of reserve grade this season though. the Roosters are definitely doing something shonky in regards to the cap…. creative accounting and apparently signing superstars for minimum wage my arse.

Check out Droppys post on the previous page. Given what I've heard it sounds pretty accurate.
