After having a taste of first grade in 2021, Jock Madden is hungry for more time in the NRL and he’ll be looking to cement a position in the top grade in the upcoming pre-season.

Having debuted against Newcastle at Magic Round, Madden had the chance of playing three NRL games in 2021 after excelling for Western Suburbs Magpies in the Knock-On Effect NSW Cup.

The 21-year-old halfback finished the season as the competition’s top point-scorer with 130 points from eight tries and 49 goals across 13 matches.

He also recorded six try assists, seven line-break assists, forced seven dropouts and made 200 tackles.

Madden will remain at Wests Tigers in 2022 after signing a one-year contract extension earlier this season.

“I’m extremely grateful and excited to be part of this club moving forward,” Madden said.

“I’ve seen this club grow a lot since I’ve been here, and I feel like I’ve developed a lot as a player too. I’ve really enjoyed learning from the players here over the past two years and I’m looking forward to taking the next step in my career now at Wests Tigers.

“Everyone is really focused on achieving the same success here at Wests Tigers and I’m excited to play my part in helping bring that for our Members and fans.”

WHAT WAS SAID
I want to have another big pre-season this year and hopefully I can nail down a spot in the NRL team. Everyone has developed quite well. There are a lot of younger players playing now and we’re building that now. If you look down the track in two to three years, a lot of us younger players would’ve played a bit of NRL and that will help us moving forward.

Wests Tigers playmaker Jock Madden

I’ve seen Jock grow a lot since first joining Wests Tigers and I’m looking forward to watching him grow further in his time here as he continues to develop as an NRL player.

Jock is thoroughly professional in all that he does — both on and off the field — and I have no doubt that his dedication to the high standard he strives to achieve will see him continue to develop into a strong Wests Tigers player

2022 FORECAST
Having played just three games in the NRL this season, Madden will get another rookie season in 2022.

With Adam Doueihi set to miss the start of the new season with an ACL injury, there’s a vacant position in the halves for Round 1.

A strong pre-season could see Madden secure the No.6 jersey and partner Luke Brooks in the halves, however recruit Jackson Hastings will be vying for that position.

Talented halfback Jock Madden has been named as the 2021 Player of the Year for the Western Suburbs Magpies in the Knock-On Effect NSW Cup.

Madden finished the season as the competition’s top point-scorer with 130 points from eight tries and 49 goals across 13 matches.

Not only did Madden control his side around the park throughout the season, but he also recorded six try assists, seven line-break assists, forced seven dropouts and made 200 tackles.

Madden’s impressive campaign saw him rewarded with a chance to make his NRL debut against Newcastle at Suncorp Stadium during Magic Round, and the 21-year-old played a further two matches at the backend of the season.

The 26-year-old half played 13 matches for the Magpies in 2021, recording three tries and averaging 89 running metres a game, as well as notching 383 tackles with an efficiency of 94.1 percent.

Madden was also nominated for the Players’ Player honour, alongside rising backrower Kelma Tuilagi, who had the opportunity of playing five NRL games in 2021.

Wests Tigers would like to congratulate Jock !
