Rothfield is such a mug, I swear reading his articles makes me feel dumber, I feel like I need a shower afterwards.
Anyone can see that stand-alone Origin weekends are the best way to keep the standard of the comp even. The problem is that it hurts the ratings and comp momentum - NRL does not want to sub all 8 weekend matches for 1 Origin. Maybe they could turn it into even more of an event, like the All-Stars concept in the US, where the comp winds down for a minute and Origin rules.
But they've never done it like this before and they are afraid to take the step. Origin grew up as a side-show interest, built for Wednesdays like the old mid-week cups, and even though it has evolved to be the pinnacle of the game, it can't dislodge the shackles of its own origin.
Or perhaps, it's just not big enough yet to justify pausing the rest of the competition.
