Do we go with either Madden or Laurie in the 14 with one playing 6. IMO our fullback would be a great 14 but apparently he’s trained well there. Without the c beside his name might be a godsend.

Madden is a long way from 1st grade.

He lacks deception with his ball playing . It seems really robotic. I’m sure he wouldn’t play like that at training . He just needs to relax.

It's not just that, at this level I'd like to see him take more control of the game. It would be nice to have a half that could push the team around the park and follow an explicit gameplan.

I'd go with Lucy or Cheeky as round 1 5/8. Just get a big lump in there that can defend and can pass. Early rounds are won on defence.

I think we do need to remember but especially with the backs where its more around creativity and timing that they have mostly play a maximum of 1 game since August 2019.

If passes were going wrong or combinations wernt working that is to be expected because they havent been playing. If someone came back from injury after 18 months out would you expect them to star in game 1.

A bit easier in the forwards to come back as you just need to tackle and run hard and requires less game time to get back into it

I reckon Laurie will be in #6 for round 1 too. Sounds like Blore is injured but club unsure on how long he'll be out for, Garner and Luc can start and we can play 3 middle forwards and a utility on the bench as both are capable of playing 80

I reckon Tuki would have done himself no halm with that effort of being a bolter for round 1

Agreed. He showed a big motor, ran the ball well, made some offloads and made his tackles. He's only 19 and a union convert, we've got him for 3 years so he could turn into something special. I reckon he'll get a debut sometime this year

On last nights performance Laurie goes to 6 for round 1 imo. I think Tuki and Stefano were really impressive.

I also don’t think Liddle is a shoe in, Simpkin looked good..

Stef was one I was really keeping and eye on and he was excellent. I thought Simpkin was better than Liddle in the game but Liddle still played well, Simpkin did well at lock too.

Stefano and Simpkins were the most impressive players on the field. I was worried about Stefano last year as he was carrying a little bit of weight but he has lost that and he was excellent last night.

Nah , disagree there. The team lacked direction and were all over the place . Exactly how Simpkin was playing. Liddle looked like , he was just cruising, and the team relaxed around that.

This may have been the thinking with momo training at 6. Also talau played there in the second half for a bit .

Liddle was a class above. About the only one of both teams that knew how to work through the game plan and remain composed.
Simpkin showed some nice touches and still got through a lot of work at dummy half, defended strong and passed well. He didn’t look tired which is a good thing.
One opinion of mine that has been changed from the trial is that Simpkin doesn’t look like he needs game time to get match fit.
Initially I thought it would be good for him to start the year in cup and get a good couple of long minute performances in before being promoted to first grade.
Whilst his game quality can improve and I’m sure it will. I don’t necessarily believe it will be beneficial for him to do that in the reserves.
I’d be happy for him and Liddle to share hooking roles in first grade.

Yea , he’s going to be an awesome weapon off the bench . Come on and give the game some energy. Liddle for me , just feels like a starter. Roll through the sets , get your forwards onto the ball ,get your halves a good feel etc.

Liddle was definitely just cruising because he only ran the ball properly twice and one of those times he lost us a few metres. Again he didn't play bad but Simpkin showed way more out there yesterday.

Running hookers are the way of the future, even Madge mentioned he liked what Simpkin did and Liddle looked good when he did run so I reckon that's what he wants.

Agree.
That’s been the way Liddle has been ever since he played jersey flegg with us. It’s why he has been highly touted for so long.
An injury free season is incredibly important for us.
In my opinion he is our most important player this year.

Ok, but it affected the game plan. He ran on the last a couple of times . That’s not ok . I reserve judgement till next week , but I can see him getting a bollocking if he does that .

He did it once and I'm sure he learned his lesson. Besides that he was making good metres and getting us rolling with his runs and his passing was good too, the only concern I had with him was the fact he fell off one or two tackles. Sounds like the starting position is up for grabs but they'll probably share the role anyway playing similar minutes

People talk about how cam plays in a dinner suit . He’s always in control . Last night Liddle looked like the only guy on the field , who was in control . Everyone else , you could see the anxiety in the play, and desperation .

Spot on mate, Liddle looked liked a man playing against boys. I think he is the 9 for round 1.

The ends of our sets in the opening half were terrible, we took the wrong option a number of times.

It really shows , to me , how , we all can view things with very different opinions . For mine all the jumping out of Simpkin , whilst feeling all erratic , and dangerous, really seemed to throw out the rhythm of those around him .
Whilst guys like @JC99 see it as having way more of an affect on the game . And it’s the reverse for Liddle . They see his biding his time and getting his forwards onto the ball , as going through the motions .
I’d hate to be a selector . One mans apathetic is another’s composed , and one mans erratic , and messing up the gameplan is another’s scheming and getting out. I don’t know who’s right , but they complement each other well.

Liddle won the hooking battle last night as he should have.He showed control and direction when he was on.Simpkin went ok but overplayed his hand which is a problem many hookers are guilty of.
I would be happy if Simpkin gets time off the bench during the season,he certainly has talent but is not a starter yet
