LIVE GAME Round 1 vs Knights

Live Game Discussion
Also anyone who thinks Mason is better than Bula, or has more potential is kidding themselves.

He was okay but he drops the footy once a game minimum - also struggled to make a tackle any time Knights made a break. Something that Bula never does.

our centres were up against 2 of the best in Gagai and Best and pinga was awesome getting out of the in goal a few times and looked dangerous with the ball.
Parramatta shoukd be an easier assignment next week with Api back

I was a mason fan at fb but now can't wait to get bula back

Biggest issue remains after 15 years: strength in the tackle. Simply, they roll over us in attack, while we get held up and knocked back.

If teams are always on the back foot and scrambling you're going to get tired, no matter how fit you are.

The knights absolutely dominated us physically in the first half. Every set was just holding on and Ponga and their speedy, weedy 5/8 had time and space. It was a matter of time and were lucky it was only 10.

With mental resolve we held the score and the effort was high, but we've seen this before and by midseason the drain of being battered makes our commitment wane.

We can talk backline, players out, Galvin's attack, but we're just really weak at tackling and players are forced into individual lunging desperate efforts.

For all the potential, fonua pole is the biggest defensive weakness. He just doesn't make dominant tackles and is always around the ankles. Seyfarth tries to tackle around the chest but he's nowhere near strong enough and players push through him and you see him scrambling back to the line all the time.

May, Hunt, turuva, luai seemed to have enough in the tackle to slow them down. Bird can do it well for about 5 minutes before looking worn out.

We need to be wrestling all the time. It doesn't make sense that a professional footy team doesn't ever address this fundamental aspect of the game.

And it's obvious we don't address it because when our best and brightest juniors come into NSW cup and NRL they are very poor defensively when compared to other teams across the league.

In 2010 and 11 we had Gareth Ellis who could single handedly stop the momentum of an opposing team with terrific technique and strength. We have never had any apparent focus on it as a team, we always look like individuals flailing about desperately.

We were clunky in attack, there were errors, players were alright generally, some big names to come back but the ONLY things that matters from here is if we can improve our strength in the tackle.

Jeez there are some cry babies here, we played a consistent top 8 side, who will probably make the eight again. We have a new look side that are still getting used to each other, and only lost by two. Anyone would've thought we lost to the Roosters, Titans, Dolphins, Eels or dragons by 30.
I think many on here are sick of accepting near enough is good enough and good effort is a pass mark.

You’re right in that it’s early in the season and combos are still forming but that defence man!

At end of the day it boils down to this ,
1) I don’t think benji knows how to get a game plan together, we had nothing in attack for 80 minutes
2) our centres are very poor
3) also our back row is woeful, even Samuel was missing in action , this will be our downfall again for this season, can’t defend can’t make breaks , equals another poor season

I would like to think we are aiming for top 8 which means we need to beat top 8 sides who have an off night. Newcastle kept us in it last night and we looked unfit.

All correct BP, I still say that Benji was so spontaneous he really never got a game plan. Always shot from the hip so very hard for his brain to harness structure.
Not a criticism but just a fact. He’s trying real hard but it may just never come.

I talked up Mason a treat during the trials, and I still like the kid, but he is HORRENDOUS under the high ball. Some have said it’s a courage thing, I don’t think it’s that. I just don’t think he knows what he’s doing. I want to see him go in the centres cos he’s a great ball runner. Couldn’t do any worse than Faataape.

On Luai, I saw some danger signs. Some things that he did at the Panthers that won’t cut it here cos the cattle around him aren’t good enough. That moment in the second half where he did a jig on halfway and threw the ball in hope, over someone’s head, and Galvin tried to be cute and tried to tunnel ball it and made a mess. Wouldn’t happen with the chin. I’m just waiting for him to run himself in circles near our line, cos I don’t see it having the same affect here.. It will look like a re-enactment of the Three Stooges.

We’ll be much better with Toa, Bula and Api in the side.
Just a bit frustrating though because with a bit better execution we would have won.
We also did get the dub of the refs decisions in first 60mins.

Still frustrated with last nights game, it was ugly but a win we desperately needed to get the monkey off our back.

If we don’t beat eels next week minus Moses we will be under immense pressure already

I thought Sam was alright. Made a half a break out of our own end at one point. I’m down as him either being our player of the year or player’s player.

For the first 30 minutes Newcastle were terrible and we could only put one try on them. As the game went on they got better and we went down hill. Nothing unusual for our team.

Galvin has been coping plenty of flack but when you have very weak centres and very weak backrowers his creative options are extremely limited. Granted by his standards his performance was poor, but he was not alone.

Round one games tend to be a lottery and I guess a team that is settled has a big advantage over a team that is introducing a lot of new faces. My only real disappointment was the miss tackles, the lack of attack will take time
