LIVE GAME Round 23 vs. Knights

Live Game Discussion
I just sent this email to Richo … he’s responded to one of my emails and ignored the other two… let’s see

Shane

I was involved with the club when we lost Teddy and Mitch Moses.

I spoke with both Justin Pascoe and Kelly Egan (director of football) at the time.

They both told me that even if Jason Taylor had won the first games of 2017 – the players would have left for a more successful club.

The club should have sacked Jason Taylor at the end of the 2016 and given Ivan Cleary a full off season to be able to convince Mitch and Teddy to stay.

Instead Justin Pascoe kept Taylor at the club for the beginning of 2017 because Jason had done the dirty work for him by getting rid of Robbie Farah and they felt they owed him. It was obvious the players wanted out because they would not extend at the back end of 2016 – much like Galvin is doing now.

My point is – that if we do not get a proper coach, who can give the players confidence in his systems – Galvin will be looking for a club early next year and it won’t matter if you change Benji after 10 games – once the player wants to leave – it will be harder for any incoming coach to convince him to stay… just like it was too hard for Ivan Cleary to convince Teddy and Mitch to stay.

We are witnessing the same scenario as 2017.

PLEASE CHANGE THE COACH.

We are living in hope that Luai will be able to convince him stay – and you do not seem like a man who lives in hope.

We should have got Bennet earlier this year and made Benji do a longer apprenticeship.

Maybe Brad Arthur? Or someone that the players respect.

Regards
We missed Bennett when he has a relationship with Benji, and we missed Flanagan who added starch to St. George that we need. Brad Arthur is probably the best of the rest, which isn't saying much, but I agree, Benji can't be the coach except perhaps in name only.

Benji should have been coaching SG BALL last season and Flegg this year, he needed the exposure and experience to learn his craft.

What stands out apart from the usual 40 mins of effort in an 80 min game was a rookie playing his 7th NRL game for the Knights scored 4 tries (and he was playing out of position I might add ) . The guy who was marking him Ailamalo was totally clueless and always out of position . Douehi inside him didn't help out much either but you simply cannot pick a winger who lets his opposite number score 4 tries.
Another point of note ! Some praise Seyfarth for his effort but it looked like he is more interested in winning fights than football games !
Twal is the definition of mediocre not good not bad but just ordinary .
Stephano is half hearted wants to be injury free for next year .
Our attack looks much better with Sezer on the field but he is mostly not on the field due to suspensions or injuries
Finally our defence SUCKS . I thought Morris was a good defensive coach ? Apparently not !

Defence sucks across the board except for a couple of teams - even Penrith got 34 put on them and still won. I think the people have to except the game is so much faster and that big scores are par for the course. We lack speed and that is big problem if you want to capitalize on your opportunities

Get real, the Ponga kick was deadset lucky, a fluke even, but the kid is aptly named, he's sharp alright, maybe even lucky but still a legitimate try and one that could only be scored against the Wests Tigers with only seconds remaining before half time.
Where’s the violins ! Talk about feeling sorry for yourself. He stepped in the line , it’s out . Doesn’t change a thing . We were terrible and deserved to lose . Both things are true .
Some of you guys are so quick to drop your bundles I swear .

What do we think we need to win the next few weeks? I'm praying latu fainu comes back. His direction and defence has been impressive. Api playing less minutes. Forwards need to pull their finger out. We need to start giving some younger guys a crack too. I'd put Laulii on wing ahead of Alaimalo. Better defender and better carries out of his own end

I'd keep him as a backup but that's it. We need to sign a solid defensive centre ASAP
Yep I agree too re Faataape.

I haven't been able to jump in till now with some thoughts so here are my random takes from yesterday ...

1 - Why did we continue to kick to Marzhew's side (either poor coaching strategy or low IQ in-game play or prefer our right side kick-chase)???

2 - Once again our lack of line-speed in defence + poor yardage gains from kick return sets = lack of winning the middle = getting frustrated leading to penalties. Not to mention the incessant unconscious bias of officials to penalise us in these situations compared to the opposition.

3 - Left side edge defence, woeful, say no more.

4 - Alaimalo, Doueihi & Faataape are NOT NRL level outside backs! Faataape is good depth, Doueihi is a good utility at best.

5 - Doueihi - SURELY the coaching staff get AD in for video sessions to show him his defensive & effort flaws. SURELY SURELY SURELY! If they become repeated, then he must be dropped. If the coaches don't do these 1-on-1 sessions, then we have an even bigger problem.

6 - This year is all about education for Bula, all about experience for Galvin, all about both for TDS. Galvin needs a big off & pre-season in the gym & refinement on his tackling technique especially in cover situations.

7 - Porter, Faataape should be retained on T&T deals only! They are depth only but at least bring something.

8 - Over our remaining 3 matches, I'd expect to see Latu Fainu, Luke Laulilii, Mason & Sukkar given opportunities. Would not surprise to see Sukkar debut at Leichhardt in a couple of weeks as a Balmain junior.

Faatape may have a good running game and tackling breaking ability.

He doesn't pass the ball though.
I like the guy but he was the worst of a bad bunch yesterday.

Bula was lazy and uninterested also.
He may one of those types we've seen over the years - all the talent in the world yet doesn't engage effort for the 80 minutes, like Krisnan Inu, Feleti Mateo and dare I say it... Latrell.
Need to really focus on making him an 80 minute player, high effort x high energy player like all the good fullbacks over the years have been.

And Faataape's defence can be found wanting at times too, a bad miss for one of their tries.

Yeah Bula needs to really work on his urgency efforts in the pre-season. He's kind of similar to Kennedy from the Sharks. He'll definitely improve his tackle-busting as he gets physically stronger & more powerful with more pre-seasons but needs to work on his urgency in defence.

Deya vu, awful defence, no going forward, and frustrating biased refs/bunker!
ATM, as we have no going forward through our forwards, we must mix our attack more and play wide earlier.
We need 3-4 aggressive forwards to get us to the opposition's 20 consistently.

I will let the coaching staff and Richardson determine who is allocated NRL and Train and Trial spots. Faataape played well yesterday and there are some very harsh comments about Bula. Being fullback with WTs is very different from being fullback to the Roosters, Raiders, Panthers, Manly etc. I am sure Marshall and his staff are well-aware of this fact. Staines also had a good game yesterday and he is another on this forum who comes in for unfair criticism. Alaimalo was left stranded by his centre who appears not to have communicated with him in defence. That is a tough assignment for a former rugby player.

Bula had shoulder problems all game it seemed.
