LIVE GAME Round 5 v Broncos

Live Game Discussion
2 classy plays from 2 classy players got us in the end.

The 40/20 from Hunt was a foot on the throat early in the second half and followed up by individual brilliance from Reynolds.

You won't often see 2 plays like that in a game, let alone back to back, so you can't say much there.

It's unlikely we pull that lead back even with the forward pass try and some speculation that May got his foot under the ball for one of their tries, but there's 4 point scoring plays that went against us and we lose by 22 points.

I didn't think we were uncompetitive and as has been said, the score didn't do justice to our performance.

Plenty to work on and still a couple of classy players short in the forwards, but we did well considering 2 key players out and losing Latu for a long period of the game.

Based on our last 2 weeks, I'd be disappointed if we don't bounce back against Newcastle and Parramatta in successive weeks, otherwise the season is looking pretty shocking after 7 rounds.

Surely Bula was out of position for that 40/20.
Given the speed he showed to get through the line for the Turuva try he must of been either too far across or not paying attention. Doesn’t a fullback follow the ball? If he was in line with Hunt as he received the pass, he would have got to that. Hunt kicked that extremely narrow possibly less than 20 meters from the sideline.

There's not a fullback in the league that stops that 40/20 it was inch perfect. Bula is in a decent position and gets on his bike early, and doesn't get near it.

It's pretty simple, the club is improving but with a team half full of teenagers, the consistency isn't there. There was always going to be games like this

Shows we are still a few years away from competing. The outright talent in that Broncos team was too much for us.

Next 4 games are all winnable - need to win at least 2 of them.

Yes, agree with many of the above comments in that we were just beaten by a better team that had some high quality moments.

If our goalkicking was better in the first half and we didn’t lose Latu then it might have been different, but at the end of the day we were under-strength from the start without Luai and Skelton and it was always going to be hard against a team that may win the comp.

Benji seems to be taking these losses really hard; it’s good that he cares but what’s really important is that they continue to take a long-term approach, take the positives and learn. They were a very young team last night.

The was a period of about 3 sets in the second half where we were attacking into their 20 and we did not get one 6 again, despite at least 3 flops from the Broncos.

The 6 agains just stopped for a period, so inconsistent, and a rule that really devalues the integrity of the sport due to the lack of transparency and blatant manipulation.

[This word has been automatically removed]ing hate the NRL.

Sione Fainu needs more minutes. Not opposed to May coming off 5-10 minutes earlier in the first half and Sione coming on instead.

Luke Laulilii looked great for his first game. Very handy to have him as a backup, was really good at yardage, in the air and scored a nice try

Tony Sukkar is a lot better than people give him credit for. Carried the ball strongly and got through his tackles well

Am I the only one that sees more upside than down with Luke L?

Has had his moments, but generally - and especially for his age - I think he has done far more good than bad. And the good has been real good.

I like him a lot.

Obviously Skelton slots right back in, but if he keeps developing I'd reshuffle our backline for him. Big fan.
People continually forget that he's 18.

He should be running around SG ball for another year yet, but he's up playing first grade.

Luke is ONLY upside at the moment.

Would be great if an AI could be developed to watch every aspect of our game live, and alert the on field ref, bunker etc, this would remove any bias 😉 or suspicion of bias.
Plus ALSO saved to a permanent digital file for any future reference...

Utilise technology.

There was so many mistakes last night that its clear the HUMANS running the show are not capable of correctly doing the job.

Time to recruit and re-train or move onto a technological assist to make up with the multiple referees shortcomings.

First 30 was very impressive. Line speed and physicality was best I've seen for ages. We obviously ran out of puff before half time.

Right throughout the Broncos halves looked so classy, all the little things they do well and they really singlehandedly lifted them with the 2pt field goal, 40/20, then chip over the top. Impressive.

Then Carrigan with his smart offloading was also a big factor.

On the other hand, Galvin was really up and down. It's getting to the point where he needs to be better. Too often our attack jams up because of him, though his kicking options were generally very good, and despite my shouts of disapproval usually got good results.

Latu is the better ball player, much more deliberate in his play. Doueihi also looked clearer in his play when he moved to the halves late. I wouldn't drop Galvin, but it would be good if he could get more consistent soon.

May was once again terrific. He lifts our whole team.

Same with turuva.

Bird also good.

Probably could have brought hunt on before half time to get back that momentum.

Very frustrating watching the game and feeling dread about officiating. We got some unlucky calls, soft penalties on both sides, bunker interventions here and not there, its a big mess.

But again, hunt and Reynolds and Carrigan were just too classy, and it really showed the gap between our halves and theirs. Understandable with latu's inexperience, but starting to expect more from Galvin.

Decent play from Sukkar. It's funny how players appear average in lower grades and then play well in 1sts.
I absolutely HATE always being worried about the bloody Ref .. it’s almost predictable that we will cop a penalty on the 4th tackle after we kick off and that the ref will give them 6 again for a “ruck infringement” on the last tackle , it is like clockwork and I really do not think it is justified 90% of the time .. the referees seem to think they are their to control the contest rather than to just officiate.. it is detrimental to the game and the fact that we almost always are referees to a standard that the opposition is not does not seem random.. even when we score a try they look at it 46 times from 39 different angles it seems compared to a quick “try confirmed” when we concede one .. Klein should never ever be allowed to be in a bunker at our game again after the Cowboys debacle , he invents new rules and reasons to cruel us and The club or Richo must be able to do something about it .. admittedly I thought tonight the referee was pretty good in the first half apart from allowing the Broncos more latitude in slowing down the play the ball but apart from that he was pretty consistent .. Rocky Stuart would actually have had a reason to blow up this week, but winning on the bell fixers everything I suppose ! 🤠

I don’t even get excited for a try anymore because you just know the clunker will be getting a work out and looking for ways to disallow a try

If you have doubt just go to the video ref to begin with ffs

Hate to sound like a cranky old man but jaysus i hate the video ref.

I cant describe how fun it was to score a try, the ref give it straight away and the joy as you cheered and jumped and yahooed!!

Now you score and watch 48 replays to see if they can find some obscure reason not to give it , it sucks the joy right out of the whole experience.

And what about those six again penalties?? No one even knows what they are for?? You're defending well and boom do it again for another six and boom again try! Its just awful and so not in the spirit of the game.

Now with Saurons eye always watching the most important part of your game is the ability to look agonised when a finger touches your face enough so camera guy gives you a penalty, Players need acting lessons not tackling practise!

I know I'm salty after last night but that experience sucked and tbf ive gone from glued to every game to barely being able to watch us play without throwing my tv out into the street!!

I thought the on field ref did a great job last night . It was a good game . As soon as Klein got involved though ……shenanigans. That guy is a blight on the game, I remember when he came back from England , there was as huge questions about why this guy was even in first grade let alone considered a top ref. IMO he’s never gotten any better . And I watch him ruin games multiple times a weekend . And somehow he’s never talked about …:
I don’t know what photos this guy has .. but how he is considered the best ref in the game , and others like the other woman (not badger she’s not good at all ) can’t get a run is beyond me .

Was it just me or was that an inside forward pass for the Walters try ?
