LIVE GAME Round 5 versus Eels

Live Game Discussion
What's the advantage of electing to receive when winning the golden point coin toss? To me it gave Parramatta an advantage in field position, which was predictable given how they started the game with Moses long kicking game. Surely given they have no yardage game we should have elected to kick off?

I'm tipping Benji will stick with Luke for another week, to show confidence and give him the opportunity to correct his errors. Topped the metres gained with a massive effort, composed and focused with his contribution after the binning, backing him to fire at his home ground at Campbelltown.

yes i don't get that, we should have kicked when we won the toss, backed our defense to keep them pinned. Even with a good kick from moses we would have started probably started our set on the 20-30m line.

What is the rule? When can the defensive line break from the 10m ... once the ball hits the ground in the play-the-ball or once it touches the foot?
The NRL Laws are not separate to the international laws of the game but there are "interpretations" that the NRL have that may be different to how the rules are applied elsewhere. The actual rules state in reference to retiring at the play the ball (Section 11.10 sub paras g and h):

(g) Players of the side not in possession other thanthe player taking part in the play-the-ball andthe acting half back are out of play if they fail to retire ten (10) metres from the point at whichthe ball is played or to their own goal lines.Players of the side in possession other than theplayer taking part in the play-the-ball and theacting halfback must retire behind their playersinvolved in the play-the-ball or to their own goalline.
(h) Having retired the distance prescribed in thepreceding paragraph no player of the team notin possession may advance until the ball has cleared the ruck. A player who is out of playmay again take part in the game when theadvantage gained by not retiring has been lost.
There is no defintion of "cleared the ruck".

In relation ot the NRL I pulled this from the NRL Laws and Interpretations 2020. From what I can see these are the most current that are avaialable to the public. In short the key principle around the defensive line at a play-the-ball is tied to the 10-metre offside rule (above) and the referee’s “go” call.

At a play-the-ball:
  • All defenders (except markers) must retreat 10 metres from the ruck.
  • They must remain in line with the referee’s mark.
  • Crucially, they cannot advance until the referee signals.
The interpretation states:

The referee will call “go” when the ball has been played backwards and then the defensive line is entitled to move forward.

Thanks @Jolls so it's either when the ref says 'go' which I highly doubt the ref says every ptb or my interpretation then is once the ball has rolled behind the player playing the ball with his foot (and can still be before the dummy half has touched it).

Mitch Moses takes crown of NRL’s biggest complainer, argues about coin toss

Moses also took umbrage with the coin toss before golden point when the coin landed slightly sideways on the turf, but the referee wasn’t having it and gave the Tigers the choice of kicking off or receiving.

He is the new Cameron Smith...

Hi all, was out that the game. The tigers are extremely fit. There were some bad calls both ways, but the worst was the sin bin for the tackle in the air. Tigers would have ran away with it if it wasn't for that - tigers were all over them.

One concern for me is Makasini - I actually don't think he's handling the speed of the game. He's very young and a big boy. He's being targeted when runnning the ball and I don't think he has the energy to use his qualities. I think the sooner he can get back to the wing, the better.

He'll make his way back to centre eventually, but for now I think he needs a spell from there. I wouldn't even rule out a game or 2 back in cup.
Makasini has a target on his back after a couple of errors. He is playing admirably, particularly of his age but he looks gassed and is coming out of tackles looking hurt.
