Wests winger John Elford
Is he the same John Elford that was a Wests second rower in the 70’s ?

Yes champion @Oldman, the one and the same: champion winger one day, champion second rower the next.
"Snoozer" had been a lifesaving sprint champion before playing league with Wests Magppies.
And became a feared forward ...
Sadly, he passed away 4/2/24, at age 76.

In Round 20, 1995, a brawl broke out between the Steelers and Balmain Tigers. Stanley jumped in, and referee Tony Maksoud sent him to the sheds.

Illawarra fullback Brendan O’Meara and Tigers legend Mark O’Neill got into a fight that spilled toward the sideline.
Stanley the Steelers mascot thought he he'd join in to protect him crew.

Referee Tony Maksoud famously pointed to the tunnel and yelled "You, off!" because a mascot cannot touch players under any circumstances.

Thanks Tiger_one:
Funny fact he presented trophies at our Chester Hill presentation day at Warwick Farm race course in the early 70’s.
He playing for Wests and we being a club in the Canterbury Bankstown district.

You learn something new every day...

In 1969 Elford appealed against the league's transfer and retention system, that prevented him from joining another club.<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Elford#cite_note-7"><span>[</span>7<span>]</span></a> He claimed that players had attended training with the "smell of alcohol on their breath," and they, "later became sick on the field." He went on to accuse a coach of wanting, "to fight everyone in the first grade behind a shed, one at a time"<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Elford#cite_note-8"><span>[</span>8<span>]</span></a> He took no part in the 1969 season.
