It’s strange hearing this.
I’m playing rugby over here in London and it’s growing. Teams everywhere, the streets are abuzz with 6 Nations vibes. It’s institutional.
Was in Paris last weekend for England v France and the stadium was packed, 80,000 people and an insane atmosphere.
I think Australia is just saturated
Northern hemisphere rugby has always been different to Southern Hemisphere rugby. Sadly, referees are becoming so fickle that all rugby now replicates NH rugby. One pass off the ruck to a fat prop who advances 0.25m. Over and over again. NH crowds love it. We hate it
I think that’s a fair assessment.
In the Sydney Subbies rugby that I played for years (until moving OS) it was very league dominated, lots of islander boys with much more focus on quick hands
Coming over here, it was a shock to the system to play slow, muddy, grinding rugby. It’s not about getting quick plays to expose the flanks with fancy backline plays (ala Benji) but instead about piston-drives up the middle and much more tactical kicking. As a 10, this was a challenge to adapt to.
So we play on the biannual Bingham Cup and the aussie sides always smash everyone. Why? Because the European sides come to play wet, muddy, 80min rugby with fat bastards hitting each other non stop. The aussies come and just throw it wide and score before anyone has even taken their seats.
In essence, the aussies are playing “league/touch”
