Russell Packer wants this World Cup to leave a legacy in New Zealand.
Playing at the Rugby League World Cup for the Kiwis is another step towards redemption for Russell Packer.
His well-publicised journey is the stuff movies get made about and if they were to make one of his life the perfect final scene would be of him lifting the World Cup in Brisbane in six weeks' time.
With one hand on it, he'd pause cheering for a moment, spot his family in the crowd, climb through the stand and give them teary-eyed hugs. Roll credits and wait for the Oscar nominations to come in.
Without going over old ground again, Packer was a sensational young player and made his NRL debut for the Warriors at 19, getting into the Kiwis two years later.
But there was a part of Packer that didn't fit with the life of a professional athlete and 2013 he went off the rails and was sentenced to two years in prison for assault.
Thankfully, he's rebuilt his life since then and after two great years playing for the Dragons, he's picked up a contract at the Wests Tigers from next season.
He's also made it back into the Kiwis this year, so while in a way he's come full circle, he's got a totally different perspective this time.
"Obviously I'm a lot older now and had a fair bit of life experience," Packer said.
"I was 21 back then and I've matured as you do when you get older.
"The time that I spent on that tour (2011 Four Nations in England) is different to how I spend my time now, I'm soaking it up now and enjoying the experience.
"You never can count on being in a Kiwis jersey and you never know when the next time is."
That next time is likely to be against Samoa at Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday for the Kiwis' opening game of the World Cup.
Given Packer's high-profile story, he could be held up as a role model for someone who's been able to turn their life around.
He has shown that no matter how bad things get or how many poor decisions a person has made, they can still go down a different path.
But does Packer want to be seen as an inspiration? Does he want to continually relive his mistakes for the betterment of others?
"The history is the history," he said.
"A lot of people want to rewrite their own, but the fact is you can't.
"I went through what I went through and I feel like I've come out the other side a better person for it.
"I've learned from the errors that I've made as a man and I strive not to be in any position where that could occur again.
"Whether or not people want to look at what I've done, I don't know.
"I talk to the media because it's a requirement of what I do, but I wouldn't naturally ask to do stories about it.
"The story I have so far is of a young kid growing up in a country town who was good at rugby league and made a lot of mistakes along the way.
"I paid the price to society for them and I've worked hard to try to improve my life and to be a better person for my kids and my partner.
"Whether people want to take motivation from it and see it as a feel good story, I don't know.
"Hopefully it can impact someone, that if they've done the wrong thing they can accept the responsibility for it and know that there will be another opportunity down the path that will pop up and give the chance to do the right things.
"I guess I'm living proof of that."
Packer's reticence at being any sort of a figurehead is of course his own choice and it's slightly different to that of his former Warriors team-mate Suaia Matagi.
Matagi became involved in gangs in Auckland when a teenager and was sentenced to three years in prison at the age of 17 for attacking two boys.
He turned his life around and does work in communities to help prevent other youngsters making the same mistakes. He has even wrote a play which he performs on stage.
"Suaia's story is a great story to be told and I admire him," Packer said.
"Like me, Suaia made mistakes in his youth and paid a price to society as I did.
"He has strived to be a better man every day since then and you have to admire that.
"The past is the past and you have to look to the future and doing the right things helps."
As well as success on the field at the World Cup, Packer hopes the Kiwis can inspire youngsters to take up the sport.
It's so rare that the New Zealand league team get to play on home soil and Packer would love it if over the next month they can capture the imagination of the country's youth.
"I think we've got a great opportunity to encourage kids who are 10 or around that to want to play league and represent this country in it," he said.
"That's something you don't think about when you're a young [professional] player, you don't understand that side of what rugby league and representing your country means to people.
"When I was younger, I just cared about playing rugby league, but now I still love playing the game, but there's also the other side of things, encouraging people to take a pathway where they can be successful at rugby league, based on how they conduct themselves and what they do on the field."
And if any of these youngsters are looking for an example in how to conduct themselves, they'd learn more than a thing or two by watching Packer over this World Cup.

Russell Packer's rise from jailbird to NRL skipper is all but complete, but it's one of the most enduring relationships of his life that is beginning all over again for the Wests Tigers co-captain.
Of the five co-captains Ivan Cleary named last week, none have come as far as Packer, who rugby league all but washed its hands of when he served a 12-month prison sentence for a vicious alcohol-fuelled assault.
Out the other side of a year behind bars, another in reserve grade as the NRL watched on and a return to the top flight with St George Illawarra Dragons, Packer will play his first game for the Tigers in Saturday's trial against Cronulla.
It's his first game under Cleary, the one-time Warriors coach who signed Packer as a 15-year-old. Debuted him as a 17-year-old. Took him to a grand final at 21.
Then visited him at Silverwater Correctional Centre when Packer was 24 and serving time for the "cowardly and deplorable" stomping of a man's head in the Sydney CBD. Provided the courts with a character reference, stressing that a return to rugby league could get Packer's life back on track.
In Packer the game now has a redemption story that truly resonates and has endured now for four years, without the slip-up so many fall into.
He hasn't touched a drop of alcohol in that time. He has his partner Lara, his two kids and a Dean's Award for outstanding results in completing his commerce degree.
And Cleary once more has his forward leader, a 28-year-old prop he was willing to front around $2 million over the next four years for.
"When I first met Ivan, well it's been over a decade and it's a different relationship now," Packer told NRL.com.
"I'm 28 now but it's still the same, and you're right we've been through a lot and he's always been there.
"It's a very open and honest relationship and you can't ask for more than that from someone.
"That honesty is all Ivan is about, and that's all I look for. Someone who can push me and tell me what they think, not what they think I want to hear.
"I personally love that about Ivan, we've worked together a long time before and it's exciting to get to do that again."
Packer is reluctant to track back over the journey told so many times since his return to the game.
But he knows being named alongside Chris Lawrence, Elijah Taylor, Josh Reynolds and Benji Marshall as co-captain is a fair landmark all the same.
"I don't look back too much, it's just a massive honour to captain this club," Packer said.
"The fact it's based on how other people see me, that they feel I'm suitable for the role, that's the honour. I don't like letting people down, so it's going to be a good challenge."
Packer has skippered occasionally in his previous rugby league life, leading New Zealand at Junior Kiwis and under 16s level.
Along with Cleary, veteran Warriors back-rower and then-skipper Simon Mannering provided serious influence during the club's surprise run to the 2011 grand final.
And Mannering remains the 'actions over oration' leader that rings loudest for Packer some seven years and all manner of obstacles on.
"I played under Simon Mannering at the Warriors when he was captain and he's someone that I've got a lot of respect for and look up to in terms of how he's approached his career," Packer said.
"He's someone that I personally really look at when I think of leading by example and doing what's best for the team.
"Hopefully my teammates can say the same about me… that extra responsibility I think that works well for me.
"The best way for me I think is performing and doing my job on the field. If you're not setting a good example how can you ask someone else to perform.
"I think we've got a good mixture in that five, we're all different people, all different personalities and we all play different positions too.
"It's been working well in terms of building a culture and setting our standards. It's going to be interesting to see how it evolves over the year."

A story of how, through a second chance provided to him by rugby league, Packer is now on the verge of paying the final instalments of close to $300,000 in compensation and legal fees to his assault victim from 2013.
In the coming weeks, the Wests Tigers co-captain will make good on the financial debt required to be paid - doing so in just over three years after serving a 12-month jail sentence.
Coincidentally, it comes in the week Packer will square off against Brisbane Broncos prop Matt Lodge at Campbelltown Sports Stadium on Friday night, providing his much-maligned opposite number with a walking example of what it takes to travel down the road to redemption.
It is understood the Wests Tigers have been working closely with Packer to draw an end to the saga, and the faith shown by the club has been reciprocated in effort and passion from the Kiwi prop in an incredible opening fortnight to the season.
The St George Illawarra Dragons deserve a huge chunk of recognition for assisting in the rehabilitation of the reformed forward, who is back playing under his decade-long mentor, Ivan Cleary.
Those closest to Packer believe the heartache and shame of that drunken night in November, 2013 has saved him from a life of unrealised potential.
But those who don’t know him sometimes find it hard to ignore his past, which is why Cleary needed to convince the board they weren’t agreeing to a liability in rubber-stamping Packer’s four-year deal with the club last year.
"I was really nervous about it, and Russell knows that," chairwoman Marina Go told NRL.com.
"It wasn’t without a lot of questioning. We don’t usually talk about what goes on in a board meeting, but I think most people would expect I questioned it when Ivan came to the board and tried to convince us. I wasn’t alone questioning it. But you have to trust your coach, don’t you?
"I come from a culture that whatever I have done in business, trusting the people I work with. I think if you don’t trust the people you empower to execute and get on with the job, then they shouldn’t be in the job.
"Ivan knew coming in what the non-negotiables were for us around values and culture. Not only did he sign up to them, he was really strong on them as well. We had a complete match on that, so we had to believe then that he wouldn’t bring someone into our club that would do anything to bring our club into disrepute. That for us was the non-negotiable."
So Cleary stood up in front of the board at Wests Ashfield Leagues Club, just a couple of months after starting his tenure at the joint venture, and painted a picture of Packer those in the room hadn’t seen.
"He said ‘Russell will own what he did. He will stand up and own the fact that what he did was unforgivable’," Go recalled.
"But he’s a completely different person now. He’s really sorry about it. He will never be that man again. He’s done everything he can to be a completely different man. Ivan stood there and said ‘I personally vouch that he’s a completely changed man’. He doesn’t drink. He’s a father. He’s got a very strong partner and he’s a really good family man. And I see that now. He is a good man. He wants to make a difference."
Go is now one of Packer’s biggest supporters, taking a keen interest in his life as he justifies the faith shown in him by the club.
She sees the work he puts in off the field trying to get his life back in order. She sees what Packer now stands for, and the similarities his personal values have with the club’s values.
Go did not meet Packer before the club signed him, but last off-season she received a phone call from the prop out of the blue.
He had finished the first year of a Masters of Business Administration at the University of Wollongong, but given his move from the Dragons to the Tigers, he was hoping to transfer to the University of NSW.
Packer knew that’s where Go studied, so he asked for her help.
"He said: 'I know that you can’t give me a character letter, because you don’t know me, but can you write me a letter of support from the club saying that the club will support me in doing my MBA to make sure I have time or at least the support of the club to do it?'," Go recalled.
"I said: ‘absolutely’. We had a really great conversation. I remember getting off the phone and thinking ‘wow, this is not who I thought he would be’. We have a very good relationship. Every time I see him, he’s an extremely respectful man. He always comes up to me and makes a beeline for me to say hello to me.
"I think he’s a very good role model for the guys coming through because it’s still a bit of a novelty in rugby league to have a female as a chair. I think still some of the young guys don’t know how to deal with me but he’s a very solid leader. I can’t say enough about him.”

I read that and I just wonder how people make comparisons to the Lodge thing. Okay yes this article is written with a positive slant and a lot of the stuff we have read on Lodge is coming from a negative slant, but I keep saying you can not compare the two. One did his time, paid what the court required and basically turned his life around in so many ways. The other, well seems to have come up short. I am not blaming Lodge, I am sure he is under starters orders from his lawyers, but I do think Greenberg jumped the gun, and maybe another year out of the NRL might have been the way to go

Lodge isnt even on the hook for the payout.
Civil matters can't be enforced via extradition and his wages can't be garnished.
Criminal matters were dealt with so he has nothing to worry about.
Take OJ Simpson case for example. Ronald Goldman is still chasing the millions awarded in the civil suit for his sons death and can't get paid.
Can't get blood out of a stone and Lodge can opt just to dodge it for the rest of his life.

The NRL should have stipulated that in Lodges return to the game he must make attempts to pay his victims
Even if it's a minimum of say 20% of his contract over the minimum wage
At least that would go some small way to showing he has some remorse
By not paying some kind of restitution he may as well come out and say get stuffed
Because until he makes the effort that's what he is saying
He's just not using words to do it
If anything I am more disappointed in the NRL itself
In light of the new information released this week in regards to assaulting his former partner
They have made a bad decision on this matter to allow lodge to return without any consequence
So lodge was out of the game for three years
