Russell Packer - OFFICIAL..

I thought I'd start a thread on this big fella as all the chat about his prospective signing tends to get buried among all the other player conversation. Hooper said he'd been offered a 700k/ four year deal by us which is way more than the Saints offer in terms of years and dollars. What is the chance we get him? Is a decision coming soon?
I could check this but how old is he? My reservation about 4 years is whether he will still be producing once he's over 30…..and 700k seems a lot. I'm hoping 600 is closer to the mark...
And there's the character issues. He's a convicted crim. Does it worry anyone that a character like him is signing for the club? I must admit my attitude has softened in favour of signing up a hard nut like him... but I still feel a little uneasy...

Props get better with age. I have no issue with 4 years. 600k which is rumoured to be the correct amount is probably overs, but as a club we need to pay overs if we want quality.

As for his criminal past, i couldn't care less. The main thing people should take into account is his behaviour since he's been back. He seems to have turned his life around and deserves to be given a chance imo.

Agreed. While his history is ugly you have to allow people the chance to redeem themselves. If he has genuinely reformed his previous behaviour I'm happy to have him play for WT.

Isn't our whole legal philosophy based on two points.

1) innocent until proven guilty

2) Do the crime pay the time.

Neither seem to be respected on this forum…

He went to jail competed his incarceration and completed his rehabilitation program. We cannot continue to punish him for previous mistakes that he has taken ownership of of and since been a remarkable citizen

Good point and, overall, I do agree that people deserve a chance to redeem themselves…

He needs a pony tail and hair bands.

Good on him and great to hear. I hope we get him!

His history is shady but good boys get dominated. As Bob said he's done his gaol time so we can't get too uppity about it I guess if he's kept his nose clean since.

Need a few blokes on the pitch who will dip in, while it's overs for him Packer will do the job.

The only issue I have with Packer is that he is an Impact Prop not a worker with his best work done in short stints…We needs that yes...but..

We are at least 2 domestic Props short with our other options currently on the Roster basically kids with little NRL experience..

If we are into redemption we could call Matt Lodge...would be cheap if we could prise him away from Unca Wayne..

Does he have a "brand" - certainly seems no problem if your form is good.

He did the crime and his time. No issue on that front for me. Our pack desperately needs aggression and he fits the bill. Rumours have him at a tick over 600k. Happy to have him if he decides to join wt.

Watched him closely for the Kiwis on Friday night - he's a pretty scary guy. I thought he was very good for them and is obviously playing well at the Dragons. Up until recently I wasn't keen on him being a Tiger, (still getting used to Reynolds), but the more I see, the more I am beginning to agree that he may be exactly what we need.
Now I am thinking bring him on - I hope he signs!!

people need to get of there high horse's with packer if he is allowed to play by the NRL then why the hell would u let another club have a good player. this is why we have been at the bottom on the table we want choir boys more than we want good players.

If drug dealing Danny wicks is allowed back then it's open slather.
Alcohol related violence happens everyday. People make bad choices on the drink and regret their actions. He did hard time where others have walk for committing worse offences.
He was scapegoat when this "coward punch" buzz word was trendy.
