If drug dealing Danny wicks is allowed back then it's open slather.
Alcohol related violence happens everyday. People make bad choices on the drink and regret their actions. He did hard time where others have walk for committing worse offences.
He was scapegoat when this "coward punch" buzz word was trendy.

A scapegoat? What the hell are you talking about? When has it ever been acceptable to stomp on a bloke's head for no reason? It's a complete dog act that stands a good chance of killing or seriously injuring someone and he absolutely deserved to be slotted for it. People were being sent to prison for that kind of offending long before "coward punch" became and phrase and they will continue to be unless and until society collapses…

You dont have to agree but the timing of his assault did him no favours. Had it not been in the height of the coward punch campaign and magistrates were sent to come down hard. He wouldn't have seen inside a jail cell on first offence.

The media hysteria demanded tougher sentencing. Packer got it.

You don't have to agree either but take it from someone who has dealt with similar cases for more than 10 years and followed sentencing patterns - he was always going in for that. An unprovoked attack involving multiple blows and stomping to the head of a defenceless victim resulting in a loss of consciousness and multiple facial fractures. First offence or not that is top end assault occasioning actual bodily harm and he couldn't have avoided imprisonment short of being an intellectually impaired, mentally ill, indigenous offender with a disadvantaged upbringing who had been acting under duress while assisting police as an informer at high risk in an anti-terrorism investigation…

well said Nelson

Oh, BS. Any judge would have sent him to prison for what is an aggravated serious assault. As for coward's punch, they get what they deserve by being sent to prison but Packer's crime was much more serious.
My view on Packer is that prison is for rehabilitation as much as punishment and if he has truly been rehabilitated, then he should be allowed to move on with his life by playing professional football.

He was no angel in prison either…..very high needs

High knees?…..what, during the squat n cough??
There are a lot of vermin running around in the NRL, at least Packer has done his time in the clink whereas other players both past and present got barely a slap on the wrist. If he is gonna crush heads on the field it may as well be with WT I say.

There have been a lot of reports around him sharing his experiences and history with at risk youths. It doesn't excuse what he has done in the past, but may demonstrate his rehabilitation and willingness to make amends. Sure he is also studying to progress this work in the future.
I do not have experience in NZ but listening to people like Packer, Ma'u and Matagi, it seems that there's plenty of opportunities to get yourself into very negative situations that have the potential to ruin your outlook and life

PACKER’S SIGNING TWIST

There’s almost one million reasons why Wests Tigers are favoured to win Kiwi Test enforcer Russell Packer’s signature over the St George Illawarra Dragons.

The Tigers have tabled a four-year offer, meaning their total package is close to $1 million in front of the Dragons’ three-year deal.

As much as Packer feels a huge debt of gratitude to Dragons CEO Peter Doust for helping him avoid being deported back to New Zealand, money also talks all languages.

It would be a massive call for the Kiwi Test forward to knock back the Tigers.

Tigers coach Ivan Cleary also enjoys a strong rapport with Packer and the club has signed his best mate Ben Matulino for next season.

The bleeding hearts suggesting the Tigers should not sign Packer because of his criminal conviction are deluded. Packer has served his punishment. He did 12 months in jail.

A million in front, geez i'd love to have him but not if it means we are paying over's like that.
Also i realise that Hooper is the source of the artical and he loves to over inflate figures.

Probably more like 130k extra per year for 3 years and then an extra year at 600 if reported figures are close.

Yep sorry read it wrong.

The extra year inflates it.

Possibly something like this. Dragon's 3yr deal at $500k is 1.5m. Tigers deal at $600k for 4yr 2.4m. I don't have a problem with that. We need quality front rowers as we don't have any. We have heaps of cap space and that will hardly hurt it. In fact we don't have any player's on any real coin except Reynolds and that's only around $700k. We are doing alright i think

that would make sense

Totally agree Nelson

Matchball you must set your standards very very low.

What does standards have to do with anything?
I don't even want Packer at the club. He is a 15 min a half impact player.
If he had assaulted that guy pre Thomas Kelly, he wouldn't have seen a cell. Bond, community service and have a good day.
