Sack Marshall

It seems to me that we acquire "good" players but they don't perform once they get here...all the ex WT's players that were in St George team last night played out of their skins, why couldn't they do that when they were with us.
They weren't doing it last year at St George, or the year befoe. It's all about momentum, you just need a few key players doing well, some wins and the support players pick up their games too.

The least the mods could do is change the thread title to Benji. Since when do we call him Marshall?
Still luv ya Benj

It was a huge risk appointing Benji. IMO he seems to have all the correct philosophy's to be a good coach.

However philosophy's and ideas are one thing, experience in implementing them is a whole other story. That comes with experience and learnings. You can't be an expert at it from ground zero.

One huge mistake was the coaching team appointed to help him. Only one assistant with any coaching experience. So 3 novices and one semi experienced coach.

The situation is untenable.

I'm not calling for the sacking of Benji. We have put ourselves in a position where we can't do that. I'm hoping Brnji realises it isn't worth putting himself and his family through this. However I believe he will give himself next year. So that being the case, it is imperative we get experienced assistants.

Obviously Morris stays but Farah and Heighno need to go from the NRL squad. If they want to be coaches of some sort they start at Flegg.

Bring in 2 smart operators.

Ben Gardiner, Jason Demetriou, maybe even Arthur would be ok being an assistant for a year or 2 to refresh. Many sacked coaches do that and it helps them get better.

I have lots if time for Gardiner. Justin Holbrook, Brad Arthur, Mal Meninga and Jason Demetriou all fit the profile we need.

Being 12-0 up at half time clearly shows that the team was not motivated to carry on. Look at the final score, Wests tigers did not add to their score after half time whilst St George piled on an extra 50 points. Atrocious and shameful Wests tigers.
Was 14-12, apologies that was a typo. But we were def in the match. 44-0 2nd half

Holbrook is too soft. I've heard what he was like at the GC and he isn't what this group need.

Gardiner is the real coaching smoky. I'm certain he got sacked because he was so highly regarded by the players. Cant have any threats...
Don’t get me wrong I’m not calling for Marshall to be sacked but rather to put some experience around him. It’s difficult to do that without him agreeing to step back and/or agree to ease off his controls. Or to just walk away.

And Yes …… Gardiner reminds me a bit of what happened at Wests all those years ago with the Wests lower grades appointment of Roy Masters who had success with (if I recall correctly) Wests under 21 team and through that built a great connection-relationship-camaraderie with the players He brought through to first grade.

He was also terrific communicator, motivator and tactician.

But not sure that necessarily the lightening could strike at same place twice with Gardiner appointment.

We do need to be a bit wary right now, Morris has just as much playing time with Parra as with WT. He could be in the mix for the new Parra coach and then we are even more in the mess if he goes. And to be truthful I would totally understand if he did.

He’s either part of the problem or part of the solution, and at present imo he’s in the middle. Roster stinks but a really good coach can partially overcome that, by maximising other aspects of the clubs performance.
Let’s remember Saints and ourselves basically started the season on equal footing. Good clubs gone bad, some player discontent and fractured rosters. I think you can easily see which club has moved forward and which hasn’t.
I’m just wondering how Luai feels now watching us play( apart from the $). He won’t need to be good, he’ll need to be a miracle worker with the cattle he’s got around him.
St George have a big forward pack that just wore our guys out by half time.
When will the penny drop that you have to win the middle, and lightweight triers don't win the 2nd
half battle? All the top sides have a winning pack of forwards.
Stef is supposed to be our pack leader, enforcer? At 4 runs = 38m something ain't right?

The club has made a forward move this year but what is needed is more experienced coaching staff to surround Benji so that he can grow as a coach. John Morris is a great assistant but the rest of the current staff need to go .

We need a specialized skills and development coach employed through the grades, strength co-Ordinator needs to be hired , sprint coach.
And we need some big boppers for those guys to work on first!

Just my opinion of course, but I think the biggest faux pas we made, among a heap of them, was not signing Flanagan as coach when he was keen to come here and instead opting for the nostalgia of the Sheens/Benji combo.

Say what you like about Flanagan but he can coach. He’s doing a good job with Saints, who were on a par with us for being crap the past two years. They are still a little inconsistent, but have improved greatly in just half a season whereas we’re still floundering and, in fact, are getting worse.

To be honest I really didn’t expect any different this year. Everyone (media) seems to disregard we (quite rightly) blew up our executive structure less than 12 months ago. New chair, board, CEO and a rookie coach with no lower grade experience - this is basically a startup organisation and that always needs patience.

People comparing us to Dogs and Dragons should reflect that they had the least the benefit of relatively stable off field structure. From an onfield perspective, we recruited Papalili, Bateman, Klemmer and Sezer but these have been disappointing for one reason or another. Couple this with a pretty deep injury list given our depth and some lengthy suspensions - performances like last night are bound to occur.

As others have suggested, Benji needs different, more experienced voices around him. I believe he can succeed but as he suggested last night, there will need to be roster changes and the staff need to look at themselves. This is where Richo perhaps should step in, hard for Benji to remove Heigno and Robbie if they aren’t performing but maybe that’s what is required
