Sack Sheens Thread

Good on Humphrey bear for extending sheens' offer from originally ending 2013 to 2014 because penrifff came knocking. Only to figure out we can't afford to sack him. Well done sir! Top management!!!

Sheens in limbo during review

TIM SHEENS is safe for now. Whether the Wests Tigers coach remains depends on the result of a review into the club's failings - as well as the significance of player rumblings.

The Wests Tigers board met for more than three hours last night to discuss the future of the coach. As they did so, player dissatisfaction was becoming clearer; Benji Marshall admitted to the Herald that he was disillusioned and confused by the player turnover. ''I don't really like what's going on,'' he said.

How much emphasis the board puts on the players' sentiments remains to be seen, but chief executive Stephen Humphreys confirmed that Sheens's future would form a part of the club's review.

''We're reviewing all parts of the business, including the football department,'' he said. ''Our priority is to get it [the review] right, and we'll address that issue in the coming days. But at this point in time, we don't want to feel pressured to do something quickly. We want to do the right thing … we're making good progress but we're not quite there yet.

''Tim loves the game, loves our club and would love to stay involved, but we need to review all aspects of the business, including that aspect. We're getting close to a conclusion on that.''

Humphreys added that there was an ''expectation of success in all areas of our business''. ''Nobody in any part of our club is satisfied with our 2012 performances, and we're all committed to doing everything we can to ensure improved results,'' he said. ''[But] we will complete our review process and agree our future plan in a prompt but orderly manner, to ensure the best possible outcomes for our club.''

Sheens's position is under threat following a disappointing season, which was followed by unrest over the decision to allow Chris Heighington and Beau Ryan to depart for Cronulla.

His position as coach was relatively secure on Sunday. As the week dragged on, though, it became far more tenuous. On Monday morning, players became aware that two of their most popular teammates were leaving. By the afternoon, many of them had assembled at the Oaks Hotel at Neutral Bay – including Ryan and Heighington – in defiant support of them. By evening, many had turned against the coach.

Last year, props Bryce Gibbs and Andrew Fifita left for Cronulla, and when the exodus of players continued this week (Blake Ayshford has also been urged to look elsewhere), following a season in which the Tigers missed the finals, the players’ unhappiness returned and multiplied. They still trained on Tuesday, under Sheens, but the sentiment among some had become clear to officials and board members.

Sheens signed a three-year deal last year, which was expected to take him through until the end of 2014.

Terminating that deal would require a payout. Tigers officials had previously concluded that, while disappointed that the pre-season premiership favourites had missed the finals, there was no better man to replace Sheens.

But that was before this week, when the players started to grumble.

While Marshall would not speculate about the future of Sheens, who brought him into first grade, he acknowledged that the impending departures of Heighington and Ryan were at odds with him. ‘‘I just don’t think it’s right,’’ the halfback said.

‘‘Culture’s an important thing for me. Culture’s about the people involved at the club. That’s why this confuses me.‘

‘‘Heighno’ holds the record for the most games at the club. To be treated the way that he has … from a culture point of view, we like to look after our own, and Heighno is one of our own. The fans love him, and the players love him. Heighno is one of those players that everyone in the team plays for.

‘‘Beau has been one of our best players this year, and what he does for us away from the game is unbelievable. I don’t really understand why this is happening. It confuses me,’’ Marshall said.

He's lost support of 1/2 the board & the senior playing group.
I rekon by next week Sheens will walk with a compromised pay out

The player clean out is needed & if more follow so be it but surely Sheens & his staff must be part of the clean out

Well, this episode could well be called 'The Diary Of A Wimpy Board'. Pathetic effort from the amateurs that run this club. Where are all the Todd Greenbergs??? I will follow the 'Tiger Sharks' next year I think.

As reported on various news and footy programs on tv, it mentioned the coach had lost the support of the playing group. What does that tell the board? What message were they getting from supporters/forum groups? You know what, in a way I'm glad they acted the way they did in keeping Sheens, because this proves there is something wrong with our management, big time. Eventually all the weeds will come out.

I think Sheens will be gone in week or two max. Having a closer look at Humpty's comments I think they are just buying some time. Buying some time to hopefully see him move to the Warriors. Or buying some time to find the money to pay him out, as well as continue secret talks with his successor.

Benji last night reading between the lines looks like he is prepared for a change. He usually backs him to the hilt, not so last night. We all know Farah is in favour of change and is probably demanding it. In my opinion the atmosphere would be toxic if we retained Sheens with all the turmoil going on. He has created this boys club and by throwing playrs under the bus to save his own job the mix just is not going to work next year. If a new coach comes in the players can at least have something to look forward to accept the new direction.

It is the only possible solution surely. I think if he was staying they would have backed him 100% last night.

With players rallying against you as the coach, and likely senior players, why would he want to stay?
He's in a prime position here, he gets a better offer, he leaves. He gets a payout, he leaves a happy man with a lot of money. If he doesn't get a better offer and we cant afford a payout, he stays as the head coach on a decent salary.

a lot of people are bagging the board and saying how sheens should of been sacked by now but this is virtually impossible without activating the payout clause in his contract. when we have no money to spare sacking him cannot happen. would be interesting to see what amount he does walk away with it will in no way be near his contracted amount.

Yeah but that could be the problem also Eddie , if the new coach wants change and the players want much of the same

The next coach could be a sacrificial lamb , might be lucky to be here 2-3 years Whoever takes over is going to have to be a no BS coach or these blokes will eat him alive

Over 3 hours to discuss the coach? You are kidding. There must have been more items on the agenda. I note the press now refers to Wests as "financially struggling".

As it stands, nothing surprises me with this club. Tomorrows paper will read TIGER MASCOT TIMMY THE TIGER GETS PUNTED in a complete overhaul of WT operations.

I think he will compromise on his payout because we cant afford it, and this is most likely why nothing happened out of last night. Humphreys is buying time to see how things go, Sheens will hopefully get a better offer, or how he will start to despise his job at the Tigers and hopefully leave this year on a compromised cheque.
It's pretty much the reason our management are trying to get all this media speculation. Raises questions but also raises options for clubs. "financially struggling" Who wants to share that with the Rugby League community? I for one am against it all, I think the management need to be sacked before the coach.

The thing is, if the players have met and had a crisis meeting to discuss the situation and in particular Sheens, something has to give. If they have lost support for him, then he must go because 2013 will be finished before it begins. They simply won't play for a coach who they have lost respect for, and Sheens would know this.

I think more will be revealed over the next couple of weeks.

Agree with both of you actually. You're right Happy, any new coach would have to be someone the players would respect straight up. I got the feeling Marshall wasn't too impressed last night when the news came through Sheens was safe for now. We all know how highly he has spoken of him in the past but he's probably like a lot of us in the fact of being respectful of Sheens but also realises the time has come.I still for the life of me cannot understand why Daniel Andersons name isn't mentioned more. Very good record, and experienced. What more could you want? Not every young coach out there is the next big thing, just go back to Terry Lamb.

I think he's gone, but they've made a deal to not announce it until after the test match. Just an impression I got when Humpty told Fox Sports last night that no decision had been reached yet.

Can you imagine what will happen next season if Sheens is coaching, knowing has no support from the players or the management and that the only reason he retained his job is because the club couldn't afford to pay out his contract?

Every loss would bring headline articles about how Sheens will soon be sacked, he'd have no respect from his players who would know there'd be a new coach by the end of the season and the casual fans would stay away knowing the season was a write off. It's a sure fire recipe for winning a wooden spoon.

The club can hide behind this pay-out dilemma all they want but by leaking to the media that they can't afford to sack him they're making his position untenable in the eyes of the players, the fans and the media. It's clearly getting to a situation where the cost of a pay-out is going to be less than the cost of keeping Sheens around for a lame duck season.

Yep. If there is any accuracy at all in what has been reported, then you would have to assume he is gone, just not official yet. There'd be nothing worse than a torturous pre season and then 26 rounds of footy playing for a coach you don't listen to anymore.

Point of no return now, the club has only one direction to go. As I said the final nail in the coffin was the players unrest after the sackings of the past week and IMO it was one of Sheens smarter moves in a while to release a core of players. Anyway the place has needed a new voice for while and I would say within a week we will have a new coach,

As for the new coach, if we are forced to make a big payout to Sheens it will be Parish as he would be the cheaper option,if we are able to release Sheens at a very reduced cost I think Brown or Taylor maybe a better chance. My choice, Parish, hard nose type who has a lot to prove and with connections to both sides of the merger
