Certainly a range of views on this.
I have seen David play a few times and he seems like a genuine workhorse type of player. You need some of them. But I dont see star qualities in him and to say that he rates higher than Dwyer is pretty dubious to me. I always expected this kid to make it big time in the top grade and his performances to-date have done nothing to convince otherwise. He seems to be bigger each time he takes the field and is going to be a fiercesome presence when he has finished bulking up.

The Bulldogs season has turned around in the last few weeks and when asked coach Moore said the inclusion of Tandy has made a huge difference. Now I rate Gower a better player than Tandy, but both are considered hacks by Sheens. Iam not say Gower is the best frontrower or backrower in the club but he should have been given a chance by now. Anyway the Dragons have had good value out of Saffey and will get bet value out of of Gower

In years gone by I have wanted Saffy to get mote of s go,...as he said to me that all he wanted was to be in the too25 squad..but not given that chance, but Saints gave seen him good enough to be a permanent interchange player for last years minor premeirs..nah , Bennett must be wrong...then from watching Ryan Tandy do 200 metres every week in the 2008 NSW Cup season for Balmain , I was pushing for his promotion...not given a chance with our FG, but he was good enough for Bellyache and now Ryan has a Premeirship ring , and now picked up by the Dogs in the starting pack and playing great footy....Like CT, we both marvel at Lewis Brown's hooking skills and we both wonder and push his cart..but no , hardly ever given the chance...and now playing in the starting Warrior's team , abd one of the current form players in the comp.
All last year , I pushed David Gower's claims for a bench spot in our WT team , but he hardly got 10 minutes to show his work ethic...but An expert like Coach Bennett realized he will be good value.
This year , I have been singing the praises of Sean Meaney , Blake Lazarus & Darren Nichols.....let's see which premeirship winning coach picks them up next year :brick:

what part of "cant have every player playing JUST becuase they show potential.. " do you not understand. We have 17 players allowed to be picked. we cant have 40 players on the field. You have your favorites, Others have theirs, Coach has his, your never going to make people happy
Still if SAFFY and TANDY are the only players that your having a cry about loosing, they are nothing more then a good club player.. nothing more, nothing less. We have let go prob , what, 20 players in 2 or 3 years.. and none have gone out and set the world on fire.
rather then make it a bash sheens thread try and look at the players that are in front of him for the postions your talking about

Tandy was only good at Melbourne because he was coming off the bench after guys like White, Lima and Toleman. There is just no way we could have carried him and Saffy in the same team.
I get frustrated that people perform better when they leave for other clubs - but they are the minority and like T-Rexx said there are plenty that aren't setting the world on fire.
What about the ones we do bring on…...Lawrence, Ayshford, Ryan, Dwyer, Fifita, Farah........

Most of the time players perform better when they leave for other clubs, because they are actually given a go to show everyone what they can do.
Some players in front of David Gower arent as good as him, but when people have favourites they fail to see beyond and fail to see the potential in other players. People talk these 'favourite' players up, and other people start to believe they are fantastic.
Goodluck to him, hopefully he gets a good go than he has here!

I think the abuse of Sheens use of State Cup is overdone to a large degree. Simply look at our squad and you can see that many of his developed players (minus probably Benji, Lawrence, Gibbs) have spent decent time in State Cup/Premier League/Reserve Grade before getting their chance in the top grade. Just going through our team for Monday night you can see this:
Ayshford spent some time in reserve grade before the 20s, and in the first half of last year, Farah spent 2 years (granted one he missed a large chunk through injury) in reserve grade, Galloway spent 2 years in reserve grade before cementing a spot in the top grade, Fulton spent some time both when he was younger, and after being dropped to reserve grade. Heighington is the perfect example, a guy who got a start in the first grade young, then got dropped and really earned his spot in the first grade side with good, hard work. Beau Ryan is in a similar case, whilst Moltzen spent a full year in reserve grade before the 20s started and found his place in the side.
Sheens does use his State Cup side, but it seems to me that too many people conveniently forget this when it comes to this argument. Maybe he is using it a bit less since the introduction of the 20s, but that is partly forced by the competition structure. I think his decision last off-season to increase his full-time squad to 33 shows he is committed to a solid open-age group to pick from.
It also seems to me that people are just trying to find a reason to complain in this sense. Either we haven't recruited well enough, or we don't retain enough fringe players. Quite simply, to go out and but the better players, we have to shed these fringe players regularly. In Gower's case, its disappointing that he couldn't get more of a chance here and had to leave, but good luck to him and I hope he has success in the future. Every club goes through this, but the best ones are those that don't waste time and effort pondering what could have been, rather working to manufacture the next player in line. Do you think the Sharks fans were really happy to see the end of Big Red?? No, but the Sharks got over it and went on to create Douglas, and then later on Snowden.
Good luck David, I hope you go on to play plenty of first grade (after winning Balmain a State Cup comp this year!!!)
