Same sex marriage debate...

It's probably because it's illegal so I'm not sure what fuss needs to be made about it. **It's sick and it needs to be stopped**, but there are laws to stop it. And the child abuse is the central issue to me in that, not the illegal marriage.

And there are people who will use these exact words about SSM.

Really? I'm a yes voter mate, but in the last 5-10 years, I personally haven't heard anything like that except from maybe from elderly folk (and not like that). Maybe some of the forumers fit that bucket too. I just put that down to most people being happier with concepts that they understood as kids or grew up with. That generation will fade.

I love my nan and pop dearly, but they're 97 and I know which way they'll probably vote. Doesn't mean they are bad people and they haven't said anything insensitive. They just grew up in a very different world.

At the end of the day, you're probably right. I just personally haven't seen that from the 'no' campaign. The majority I've seen are the elderly or for religious reasons (Abbott ticks both boxes!)

Ok, now I've read GYGT's post. I take some of it back - there are exceptions.

The thing is GYGT that at the moment we have institutionalised racism in the form or not allowing SSM. I have a couple of homo mates at work and they seem like good people to me.

One guy is young and campaigning on this issue. I can't imagine the s*** that he has had to put up with in his life. Why anyone would state that he can't get married if he chooses too is beyond me.

I love how you use the word homo as well. it just shows that you are a bigot.

I also don't get the left comment. I'm what would be considered a liberal in that I believe in small government and allowing people to choose how they want to live their life. The right at this point are nothing like that. They want to control how others live their life and SSM is a classic example of this.

Racism is when football supporters at a SOO match yell out "black c t" to a very good indigenous player.

Racism is when you are the first into a shop and the last one served.

Racism is when you are refused the sale of alcohol at a bottle shop but your wife can immediately go in and be sold the same product.

Domestic violence becomes ingrained when a young indigenous teenager tells you that if your boyfriend does not hit you, he does not love you.

We all know gay men and women or have gay relatives, but that is not relevant to the issue which is about the definition of marriage.

I guess once the yes vote gets up and equality is achieved, the "Gay Mardo Gras" can become just "The Mardi Gras", and in the spirit of equality Hetero's can join in to celebrate their straightness.
I also think the LGBTIQ term is a little outdated. Perhaps it can be changed to something that we can more easily remember. For a start the "B" is out. I think it makes sense that "B" be replaced with "O" for others. That can include "Bi's", "Gender Neutrals" and any other term thought up in the future. The "L" should be at the start in honour of the Dykes on Bikes leading the way at the Mardi Gras for so long. "H" for Hetero should be included for the sake of equality. I favour it being updated to;
LQ-GTHO (phase 2)
Easy to remember, with a little Aussie flavour.

Out of curiosity, would you have any interest in marching in a straight parade?

Surely the parade would need to go around a corner somewhere, otherwise it would be pretty short. I am not sure what the longest straight road is in an urban area that could hold the parade.

racism is also when someone receives subsidised education, higher welfare payments, reduced rate home loans… based on their ethnicity/colour.

The system is broken beyond repair.

The postal vote was merely a question yes/no in regards to personal opinion. This thread, much like the real world puts intolerance on show. Most will at first think I am referring to the "no"crowd as being intolerant, but the lack of respect for others of differing opinion on the subject is the real shame to come out of all of this.

The far left becoming the far right has in itself never been more apparent to me.

First time I open this thread and I can not believe it has hit 40 pages….wow lol.

Do people actually care? For crying out loud it will be legalised whether it is today or tomorrow.

Get over it and move on.

Just googled to confirm.

The other difference is the plebiscite is essentially a non-binding "vote" on an issue, run by the AEC. Not the ABS and Auspost.

Now descended from a survey to the point of an absolute shambles and even more so than that of the last census.

It is now worse than the last time I/we were asked a question, being the always doomed to fail flawed option republic one, that should have also been a simple yes/no.

Agree, a lot of similarities with how a basic question has been completely muddied and derailed by hypotheses of doom and dystopia should something change.

You should know better Milky. If you're not interested don't click on the thread. Pretty simple mate.

Of course it is. Anyone voting no is stating that because someone is homosexual they cannot be married. That is discrimination. If you are voting no you are stating that you get to define marriage based on it being only for heterosexual people.

As has been previously noted plenty of heterosexual people that get married don't have great marriages or don't have kids. There is no logical reason that has been stated once why homosexual people cannot get married, The argument from the people stating no on this thread has been about the left restricting your rights or something like that. That argument is clearly all messed up because the opposite is occurring right now via stating that SSM is illegal.

I should add that this isn't an issue in most first world countries.

All those gays who were bashed and pushed over cliffs in the 1970s and 1980s around Sydney I am sure would have much preferred just a bleeding lip instead. It is Abbott's attitude that assists in discrimination that results in more extreme reactions like those murders. That is also why the ripple effect is also necessary after change of law so that all discrimination is eliminated at face to face level.

So your homo mate bashed him. Yet you then wring your hands about violence towards homo's. That seems homosexual fair.

Well you've well and truly exposed yourself as a homophobic bigot. Probably the most shameful post in this whole thread. You're a disgrace.

Get off our high horse you embarrassing snowflake.

There are some shocking bigots in this thread…

Look in the mirror you hypocrites.

Are you all there because you aren't making any rational sense. A bigot discriminates against someone else based on something like sex, race or sexual preference. The only bigot is the guy who made homophobic comments.

There are some morons like yourself who are just blabbering nonsense.
