Save Our Sides Protest Rally - SUN 05FEB11

Im all for supporting all junior sports in the western suburbs of sydney, and feel that if the junior league is not being supported this is an issue worth protesting.
That said I cant support most of the "demands"

The move away from a central location such as Concord would be pure folly. I understand that the Macarthur is growing and has an excellent population base. However an inner suburbs location provides far more commercial opportunity.

As for pathway to NRL, the pathway for a kid in the Macarthur is clear. Wests (Matts and Ball), WT NYC, than the NRL full time squad, all fringe players in the same side….this makes footy sense.

I think that more than 4 games is desirable, however the commercial advantage of playing games at the SFS means that we are left with only 8 games to be spread across 2 extremely popular suburban grounds....if either had less than 4 it would be a travesty. Id like to see more games at both suburban grounds, but does not seem to be an option right now.

Idealy i'd like to see 6 apiece between Leichardt and Cambo, but realisticly id like to 5 each with 2 at the SFS. We could play our two biggest home games of the yr at the SFS, that way maybe playing at the SFS may have some significance

GNR that would be my thoughts as well. Id love to play 6 each at the suburban grounds, and understand why this is not the case, however feel 2 at the SFS might be a viable option. That said, Im not sure on the financial implications of giving up 2 games at SFS

What you mean back on topic ? Wests HQ ??

From the relevant posts I've read it seems the rally is about the junior clubs been fed up with the way the game is run in Campbelltown and are asking for more of a presence from the stakeholders that count ie the NRL and Wests Tigers.

Seeing as though one of the "demands" of the rally (as noted in the OP) was for more games to be played at CO, I fail to see how talk about the ground allocation is off topic…

LOGISTICS would make it very tough for a ws/bal matts to state cup squad, hows a kjid from leichhardt get to training at campbelltown or vice versa .The juniors are doing well so i cant see why they need to merge.
The Wests/group6 sides played in a Wests Tigers styled jersey so i suppose they already have some kind of a hold.

Had me puzzled too
============================
1/4 chook is it the matts and ball teams playing in the WT type jersey or the development squads which in Wests Magpies case I now believe theyre managed by WTs thus the WT type jumpers?

Tough question Tiger Watto he must be still looking for his registration card to make sure.

came through balmain juniors fivedock and juniors played first grade with wests and balmain in the late 80s early 90s.

I would have thought clown college would have been more Damo's style, as opposed to pursuing a career in League

Ha ha maybe GNR4LIFE but if he's who I'm guessing he is, he was a pretty good fill-in player for Balmain in the very late 80s/early 90s. I make no comment on what has happened since then though 😕

Good to see some reality come through Damo, Wests need to concentrate on what they have now and build on it instead of wasting energy trying to be the dominant partner in the merger. West's are under the impression that they have been hard done by, "quite simply they have put Balmain into a dominant position" by being stubborn to the point that even West's die hards are getting sick of the whining.
What it is is what it is just get on board and help keep"Wests Tigers" what they now are which is a force in the NRL.

The truth is, if you got down to it, the people interested in protesting want a greater WT's presence in Campbelltown.

I'm from the Balmain side of the marriage but I can admit the club is more Balmain than West's.

This may not be intentional it's just business - yes there are many businesses in Campbelltown but the Harry Triguboff's of the world aren't going to drive their Bentley's to Leumeah on a Sunday afternoon. You also wont get guys like Benji, Lote and Adam Blair setting up home in Eagle Vale (no disrespect to the people who live there).

Also lets be honest the people of the Campbelltown region were never really engrossed in the Magpies and I don't think even if the Tigers played all their games there that they would be able to replicate the support we get from fans and sponsors in the inner west.

I don't think however that you can blame this situation on anything but the constant infighting that seems to take place between the two West's licensed clubs and the football club.

Until they are all on the same page the West's Magpies element will continue to fade away sadly.

You say they wouldnt live at Eagle vale?? Maybe true but if they were based in the region they could live in many "upmarket" places? Camden,Picton,Dehnam court, Oran park, Cobbity, Grassmere even down here in Bowral (good enough for Alan jones ) these areas all have propertys over the 1 mill mark So to say the region is just Campbelltown and that stigma is a joke!! Its not 1987 when it was Cambelltown you now have Macarthur as a massive region and growing FAST!! with clubs from Liverpool, Campbelltown, Camden, Wollondilly and Southern Highlands.

I think there's a difference between a 70 year old radio broadcaster and a 24 year old footballer. There are heaps of nice spots in and around the Macarthur but getting young single guys interested in settling down there is another issue.

If the WT's were move to Campbelltown it would weaken their position in the battle against the other NRL clubs and AFL I feel.

We need to foster and maintain a strong presence in the Macarthur for sure but putting all our eggs in that basket wouldn't be a wise move, especially while the West's half of the merger don't have their house in order.

I guess the thousands of young familys moving out there every year and settling down don't count must be a mirage of houses!! and baseing an NRL team in a part of WESTERN SYDNEY Would weaken against AFL and other clubs who have raided this district for 20 years!!! Not being rude but are you serious Do you have any idea of the size and growth of this region.
You are correct on Wests not having there house in order but things change and there starting to get some very handy allies!!!

One minute one is talking players relocating there…..now highlander you are talking families moving a settling down.
That is a different argument and getting away from the point of what you originally quoted and discussed.

Who?

Helmsey Campbelltown is in Western Sydney. Western Sydney is currently under attack from AFL, and you think the tigers moving there would weaken their position in the battle? how do you work that out ? AFL is threatning, so to strenghten our poistion, LETS NOT move to Western Sydney. Would we be better off battling the AFL on the Coast?

Western Sydney isnt under attack from AFL… Thats what some diehard League people want everyone to think. The NRL fell for it and devised an AD Campaign calling it "Our House"... AFL has been there for years and through natural progression, will now have an Elite Sporting Franchise based there.

AFL & RL will survive in the Western Sydney corridor. If anything, it will bring more corporate dollars to the region over the long term through competition for corporate exposure.
